Doodle-an-AC

Functional Window AC is a lighter-side-of-life take on window ACs and the general concept of owning updated appliances. With innovations in technology and frequent design changes, most window air conditioners get outdated pretty fast. By equipping this concept with a blank sketching surface, the designer suggests that we design our own AC covers and keep them updated with doodles and current themes.

What Laundry Day Looks Like in 2050

The Orbit washes clothes without soap or water, blasting sublimated dry ice at high pressure into dirty clothes, removing dirt, grease and other particles from the clothing. Liquid nitrogen superconductor levitates the drum in the center of the base without friction, eliminating noise and making the machine self-sufficient. It may be far out, but it’s waaaaaaay cool!

Non-aromatic Cooking?

I like the idea that Hong Ying Guo is exploring with the Purifi Pan. The concept is simple; eliminating annoying cooking fumes right at the source and converting it to a refreshing gust of air. The approach is to add an electronic purifying element straight on the pan’s rim and doing away with conventional hoods. Hopefully its detachable, to enable easy cleaning and as we can see it is suitable for different sized utensils, with a couple of tweaks and refinements, I think we’ll have a winner in our hands.

DesignMarch: Meaningful Kitchenwares

Three items that add new value to Icelandic dining

From model Elettra Wiedemann’s Goodness pop-up restaurant at Hotel Natura to the recently-developed products showcased around Reykjavik, new ways to work with food was at the forefront of Icelandic design at this year’s DesignMarch fair. Young designers are tapping into their surreal natural environment, creating new cuisines or updating classic kitchen wares to express modern opinions on nutrition. Below are three clever items that weave Icelandic traditions into modern design, highlighting the brilliance of country’s emerging talent.

Wheel of Nutrition

Icelandic designer Hafsteinn Juliusson emphasizes portion control with a series of colorful pie-chart plates. Developed with Portuguese designer Rui Pereira, the Porcel porcelain plates offer eaters three options for proportional consumption: Diet, Extra Ordinary or Supersize. The simple idea is the latest from HAF, the studio Juliusson set up after finishing his Masters from Milan’s Scuola Politecnica Di Design, which focuses on creating meaningful products within the world of design while avoiding mass production. The Wheel of Nutrition plates were on view during DesignMarch at the Italian aperitivo he hosted and are available in short supply at the Icelandic design shop Kraum.

5 x Pancake

Product designers Tinna Gunnarsdóttir, Stefán Pétur Sólveigarson, Ingibjörg Hanna Bjarnadóttir, fashion designer Sonja Bent and engineer-turned-jewelry designer Steinunn Vala Sigfúsdóttir each updated the classic Icelandic pancake pan for Kraum. The kind of item found in every kitchen cupboard and given to kids leaving for college, the pan hasn’t received a redesign since created in 1950 by the casting company Málmsteypan Hella. The five designers commissioned by Kraum breathe new life into the quintessential appliance by creating new handles that reflect a more modern aesthetic, enticing future generations to continue the tradition.

Roll Cake Chopping Block

A collaboration between the Iceland Academy of the Arts and food R&D institute Matís, the Designers and Farmers Project works with farmers from around Iceland to create new food products that reflect traditional national fare. Last year we enjoyed their toffee-like Rhubarbbrittle candy, which comes wrapped in rhubarb-inspired paper.

This year we learned the story behind their guillotine-like chopping block, which perfectly cuts a rye bread roll cake stuffed with lamb paté or Arctic char. The group was inspired by the life and work of the renowned early 20th-century Icelandic writer Þórbergur Þórðarson, an eccentric character who greatly enjoyed roll cakes. Þórðarson was obsessed with measuring things, and could often be found wandering around, measuring distances at Hali—the farm where he was born and now one of the farms on the collaboration’s roster. The chopping block ensures that each slice of roll cake is exactly one thumb-length long in tribute to his fixation.

Dyson Hot

A revolutionary space heater from the U.K.’s leading appliance producer

dyson-hot1.jpg dyson-hot2.jpg

James Dyson has been turning appliances into art since launching his bright pink G-Force vacuum cleaner in 1983. Never ceasing to innovate, the eponymous line has grown to include several styles of vacuums, hand dryers, fans and now, a heater. The Dyson Hot draws on the technology used in the bladeless Air Multiplyer Fan, passing a stream of air over an airfoil-shaped ramp. Surrounding air is drawn in, amplified six times through induction and heated with 20 ceramic stones, never exceeding 392 degrees and alleviating the burning smell many heaters emit.

Taking over two years (and hundreds of prototypes) to develop, the Dyson Hot also uses as little energy as possible. Once the room has reached the desired temperature, the heater turns off and only turns back on once it detects the temperature has dropped.

dyson-trio1.jpg

Claiming to heat the whole room faster than any other heater, the oscillating Dyson Hot not only looks good, but is a valuable commodity for any chilly home or office. The Hot comes in white or blue with silver colorways and will sell online and in stores for £270.

DeLonghi kMix Collection

Simple design, fresh color and clean lines meet just in time for breakfast

kMix-Coffee-Maker.jpg

We recently checked out the colorful new line of appliances from DeLonghi first hand. A nostalgic feel combined with the bold hues of today initially brought the kMix Collection to our attention; the intuitive controls and ease of use kept us interested. Adding to the appeal, each die-cast aluminum appliance comes in eight colors—including our favored green—for an unbelievably cute look.

Fun colors aside, the size and minimalism of the controls are the real selling points for the five-cup drip coffeemaker. The compact silhouette and one-button design make for unobtrusive presence not often found in counter-top makers. Plus, it has all the usual features that ensure proper brewing temperature and keep your coffee hot once brewed—everything you need and nothing you don’t.

All-metal, the two-slice toaster is both basic and functional. To prevent burning your breakfast, the “peek and view” function lifts the toast to check without canceling the timer, and variable browning control ensures a consistent toast each time. We also really appreciate the bun warmer and toast rack, a clever addition that sits atop the toaster and does just what its name implies.

DeLonghi-kMix-toaster1.jpg DeLonghi-kMix-toaster2.jpg

Both the toaster and coffeemaker are available now from Bloomingdales for $125 and $165, respectively. Check Broadway Panhanndler for the electric kettle ($80), and espresso-maker ($300), as well as the other products in the collection.

Aroma Mortar and Pestle

Alessi’s fresh take on one of the oldest kitchen appliances

Mortar&Pestle-1.jpg

The mortar and pestle is one of the most ancient utensils in the contemporary chef’s arsenal, and Eero Aarnio has given the classic grinder a makeover. Using smooth, playful curves reminiscent of his popular ’67 Ball Chair, Aarnio redefines the generally clunky mortar with a short cylinder base and a polished, ergonomic pestle.

Aarnio designed this piece for Alessi, saying of his work there, “I approach product design from two different angles: firstly, from a study of the possibilities that new materials bring to the design process and secondly, through creativity based solely on feelings, which in turn brings you closer to art and endless possibilities.” The “Aroma” will debut with the Alessi Fall/Winter 2011 collection in August.

ToastaBags

Handy sleeves make perfect toaster sandwiches without the mess
ToastaBags-Boska3.jpg

A game-changing food invention that just about rivals sliced bread, ToastaBags provides a mess-free method for making a sandwich toasted to perfection. This child-friendly product is ideal for those with an affinity for sandwiches that ooze with melted cheese—a liking shared by ToastaBags’ maker, Boska Holland, which has been “exploring cheese” since 1896.

Preparing a toasty is as simple as dropping a sandwich stacked with your favorite ingredients into a ToastaBag and placing the bag in the toaster. The fine mesh allows for crispness while catching any drips. When it’s done, you can easily remove the bag without burning your fingers and clean up is a cinch too. You can throw them in the dishwasher or wash by hand with warm water about 50 times before they’re no longer reusable. For those truly committed to toasty sandwiches, the bags are worlds more convenient than having to house an extra appliance.

Get your Boska Holland’s ToastaBags from the Cheese Fondue Shop for around $8, available in a packet of three.

R2B2

Pedal-powered all-in-one appliance can really get you cooking

r2b2-1.jpg r2b2-2.jpg

StudioMontag, an open association of product designers and students who met at Germany’s Bauhaus-University Weimar, share an interest in transforming daily life into something incredible. A brilliant illustration of their creative thinking, the R2B2 looks like something Pee-Wee Herman would invent, but unlike the cinematic version it actually conserves energy while rapidly chopping, whipping, crumbling, spinning and more.

r2b2-3.jpg

Designed by Christoph Thetard, the mechanical appliance hides a flywheel below a worktop, that when accelerated with a simple foot pedal can directly power a hand mixer, a blender and a coffee grinder. Smart transmission ratios and different gears enable more than 10,000 rotations per minute. Chopping herbs, grating cheese or mixing cocktails can be accomplished with a few pedal kicks only, in an unexpectedly silent way.

r2b2-4.jpg r2b2-5.jpg

Still in prototype form, Thetard has started a Kickstarter crowd-funding process to bring his concept to reality. Find out more info at the R2B2 website.
