The All-New 2011 Audi A8 and Light Light by Tom Dixon

PB300120.jpg

Audi invited us to Miami for the worldwide launch of the all-new A8, their flagship sedan, held in conjunction with the opening of Design Miami. Tom Dixon and Stefan Sielaff (Audi’s Head of Design) were part of a panel that spoke about the importance of innovation in design, and how core both are at Audi. Tom then spoke about “Light Light,” a piece he made in celebration of the car’s launch. Commissioned by Audi, the sculpture took four weeks from brief to completion, and was inspired by the car’s impressive use of aluminum and LED and interior ambient lighting.

New from top to bottom, the aluminum-framed A8 features innovations in all areas—the most impressive perhaps are in the bodywork, next generation multimedia controls and the LED lights. One interesting evolution is the nav system, which allows gesture-based input on a small touchpad. Instead of scrolling or touching the display to select characters, you simply draw them with your finger (similar to Graffiti on the old Palm Pilots). It was surprisingly easy and accurate. Phone numbers and character based languages are also supported, and you can enter while listening to music or talking. The touchpad features black panel technology, which allows different screens to appear when needed, such as the six presets for your favorite audio sources. The A8 comes in two eight-cylinder models, the 4.2 FSI and the 4.2 TDI. Two six cylinder models will follow, both TDI. Despite increased engine performance and mileage, fuel consumption is lower in all of the engines.

Atlantas High Museum Salutes John Portman

J_portman.jpg

Architect and Atlanta native John Portman, who designed a hefty chunk of his hometown’s downtown, gets the star treatment in a peachy new exhibition at the High Museum of Art. On view through April 18, 2010, “John Portman: Art & Architecture,” features architectural projects by Portman, now 85 (Frank Lloyd Wright guest lectured in one of his college courses at Georgia Tech), as well as his furniture, paintings, and sculpture. Among the 15 completed and current projects featured in the show is the Hyatt Regency Atlanta, Portman’s pioneering atrium hotel of 1967 that he followed up with soaring airy spaces in Detroit’s Renaissance Center and the Marriott Marquis in New York City. These days, his firm is doing a bustling business in Asia, with projects underway throughout China and in India (a Hyatt for Hyderabad), and of course, South Korea’s Incheon Tower, a twin-towered complex that will stand 151 feet tall. Can’t make it to Atlanta? You need not be tardy for the party—check out the below video for more about Portman.

Twinkle Pop-Up Shop

twinklemilanmat.jpg twinkleberet.jpg

Before the fashionable yarn brand Wool and the Gang and even before celebs started toting needles, designer Wenlan Chia reinvented knitting with her chunky hoodies and sweater dresses under the name Twinkle. Over the last decade, Wenlan’s evolved it into a complete lifestyle brand, marking its 10th anniversary with a Twinkle by Wenlan pop-up shop in NYC’s East Village that opens next week.

Presenting a cohesive mix of old and new items from both wardrobe and home, the temporary boutique will include the current fall and holiday 2009 collections, alongside reissued limited edition pieces of notable items such as the Fox turtleneck sweater dress and Unicorn crew neck sweater (pictured above). Exclusives like a double-sided purple wool jacket and black wool shirt dress round out the attire, while knitted holiday ornaments and the popular Milan mat (pictured top left) represent the Twinkle Living department.

Wenlan’s new “Twinkle Sews,” a book filled with 25 patterns and helping tips from the designer makes a great gift and a further glimpse into the history of Wenlan’s career. Her third book to date, it will be sold at the pop-up or online from Amazon.
