The Crop Top: Love it or Lose it?

imageIn the fashion world, it’s “what is old is new again” all of the time. Everywhere I turn, it seems like the cropped top is one of those “new” old trends that’s coming back with a vengeance! They were on the runways (Alexander Wang & Victoria Bartlett, for instance), in tons of editorials, and now it seems like the lynch pin of ’90s fashion is even popping into stores! After years of t-shirts and tops getting longer and longer, are we ready to raise the shirt hemline, bare the midriff again, and show off some skin? While the trend seems sexily adorable on tall Eastern European models in the pages of Vogue, is it going to be able to translate to mere mortals? Crop tops can be a great option with high-waisted pants and skirts, as you don’t have to tuck in all that excess fabric. But what happens with tighter pants? What’s going to hide a woman’s worst enemy… the muffin top? Just the thought of wandering the city streets with my belly bare makes me want to lock myself in my apt with my ab roller!

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week SWIM Runway: Cia.Maritima

imageWell, if someone’s gotta bring the Latin flavor to the Mercedes Benz SWIM runway, it might as well be Brazilian beachwear designer Cia.Maritima! The show started off relatively slow, giving us a glimpse of some undoubtedly unique yet demure-looking prints that resembled a sort of desaturated stained glass pattern. However, things slowly began to simmer with the introduction of vivid ombre string bikinis and how-long-can-you-go bottoms, and then reached an eventual boiling point with the parade of barely-there leopard, zebra, and python-printed ensembles that left everyone feeling hot, hot, hot! Don’t get me wrong, the runway wasn’t all a parade of skin and snakeskin. The designer wowed with an impressive array of coverups in every cut and color — full-length tunics, sexy sarongs, flowing mini and maxi dresses, and even a pair of silky sheer pants. Hot In The Hive: Beer In A Boot For Father’s Day!

imageFather’s Day is a step around the corner and I never know what to get my dad! I crossed ties off the list many years ago (he made me), he probably has bathrobe and slipper sets to last him two lifetimes, and all those cool gadgets and grill tools that my brother and I were gonna go halfsies on? He’s already bought them for himself! So, I think this year, I will go for a gift that’s something fun mixed with something a little traditional. Most men like beer… maybe even borderline love. Men have loved beer throughout the ages so much that German soldiers would drink it out of their boots, rather than not drink it at all! So this Father’s Day, get your dad the gift of tradition and beer with a glass beer boot from HomeWetBar! These glass boots hold up to 18 oz of beer which is about half a liter. Not big enough? They also come in two liter boot sizes! Dad may be sick of getting house slippers, but here’s some footwear that he’ll love to get out and use again and again! At $20 each, get a pair of beer boots and join your father for a Father’s Day brewski!

Price: $19.95

Hot In The Hive: UVSunSense Sun Monitor Wristbands

imageTime flies when you’re having fun in the sun. One minute you’re happy as a clam, playing volleyball or reading a book on the beach, the next you’re stomping down the aisles at Walgreens in search of aloe for that gnarly sunburn you’ve earned. You already know that too much sun exposure is harmful, and you’ve had enough peeling shoulders in your time to recognize the importance of sunscreen, but even the most seasoned of sun-baskers have a hard time keeping of track of their last sunscreen application or even knowing exactly when it’s time to call it a day and take cover. Enter UVSunSense sun monitoring wristbands. Worn on your wrist in addition to a nice slathering of SPF 15 or higher, the band’s surface changes color to alert you when it’s time to either slop on some more sunscreen or find the nearest shady spot ASAP. Sure, they might be a pretty dorky-looking excuse for a bangle, but they look a heck of a lot cooler than a blistering lobster complexion!

Price: $6.89 for a pack of 7

Amsterdam International Fashion Week: Oilily

Oilily presented their Fall/Winter ’09 collection with lots of gold! Alive with charm, colour, quality, and original prints, the unique collection enables any woman, young or old, to accentuate her own individuality. Rich fabrics, dreamy and surreal graphics stood side by side to create deliberately rebellious but feminine designs. Viennese artists from the early 1900s such as Hundertwasser and Klimt were the inspiration for this collection’s prints, colour palette and decorative embellishments. With just a few fundamental amendments here and there, Oilily’s striking womenswear designs transform into the most beautiful new creations for girls.
The collection ranges from voluminous skirts to snug wool cardigans, as well as eye-catching tops and sophisticated dresses made from rich, dramatic fabrics.
