Orange Lipstick – A Spring 2011 Trend to Try Now!

imageAt New York Fashion Week, bright orange lipstick literally popped off the runway. Paired with everything from minimalistic blacks to jolly floral prints, it made a statement that was fun, flirty and fresh, and it’s a trend you can easily wear this fall to be ahead of the fashion curve.

We saw and reported on this citrus-spritzed trend at a whopping twelve different shows. While the tangerine shade does follow, in theory, fall’s bold lipstick trend, spring’s hottest hue has the added plus of emphasizing your eye color and the highlights in your hair.

We asked Shiseido Makeup Artistic Director Dick Page – who created the brilliant orange lip for the Marc by Marc Jacobs and Isaac Mizrahi shows – how one unique shade can end up dominating the runways.

China Fashion Week Highlights

imageIs it just me or are all the major fashion houses looking to China lately? China Fashion Week happened recently at the end of March in Beijing.

The event has been going on for 14 years but I think the visibility of it worldwide was more apparent this year where it covered 40 brands, 29 collections, and 7 competitions. There were some amazing pieces from very wearable to avant-garde.

I love these ombre knits that were a part of a designer’s creation during the Cherry Cup New Fashion Designer Contest. (I wish I knew the designer who did this and who ended up winning. If anyone knows please let me know!)

Beauty Pick Me Up – Backstage at Altuzarra

imageAt this past Fashion Week, our favorite Contributing Editor, Geri Hirsch of Because I’m Addicted, had the good luck to go backstage at Altuzarra and snap some first-hand beauty pics! We love the trends we saw and can’t wait to try them out!

Here’s our three favorite style! Then click on the slideshow to see our fave products that will help you get the look!

Wine Red Lips – Not quite as bright and show-y as cherry red, but still impactful and full of sex appeal! Try a creamy burgundy or a sweep of matte merlot. Or if the opaque wine color is too deep for you, look for a lip stain that allows you to build just the right coverage that you desire!

Slicked Back Bun – Side-part, mid-part … what look is most flattering for your face shape? A look that’s flattering for all? No part! Buns, whether high or low, are the new hair trend, and nothing makes it look more elegant or put together than a slicked back look!

Smudged Cat-Eye Liner – While we won’t being trying out as emphasized a tail on our liner as we saw at Altuzarra backstage, the cat-eye look is a classic style that is sensual and dramatic without being over the top! It helps elongate the eye and the new take on the cat-eye liner is to give it a few light smudges to soften the look. Perfect for day and with a slightly darker and thicker line, it’s a hot look for night too!

Street Style – Our Favorite Fashion Week Trends!

imageNow that Fashion Week has come to a close, it’s time to sort through the cacophony of styles and trends and find which ones are the favorites! There were countless new looks, materials and style details that we’re dying to try for ourselves, but after much deliberation, we’ve narrowed it down to these five must-trys!

And while we love a lot of these runway designers, we’re not always so crazy about the high price tags. Take a look at our favorite NYFW trend choices and click on the slideshow to see how you can get the look for yourself at more affordable prices!

Fluid Trousers – We don’t have to say goodbye to the skinny leg, but we’re excited to give a hearty ‘welcome back!’ to trousers that are more fluid in shape and fabrication. Materials with lots of movement and more voluminous silhouettes are a chic look for an afternoon with the girls or for work! Just make sure the top isn’t too voluminous itself for a more balanced look.

Skinny Belts – Wide waist cinchers were all the rage and while creating a waistline is always a good style, the extreme sizes of belts have become more demure and versatile. Medium and skinny leather belts were seen worn over large ponchos or roomy tops, lending a more sophisticated vibe.

Leather Dresses – Not for the faint of style! Leather dresses are a definite up-coming trend and we love the edgy daring look! Leather is a tough and sexy material alreaady so keep it classy with slightly higher necklines and lower hems. Avoid pairing them with leather jackets and boots and opt instead for more feminine pieces to help soften the look.

Plaids – They’re back! Since the 90’s influx of plaid patterns, plaid has been a trend that’s been creeping around the corners and never quite disappeared from the style scene and now they’ve returned with a vengeance! Large plaid patterns on everything from ponchos and outerwear, to skirts and tops, were seen all over the runway and we’re loving it!

Quilted Outerwear – Another remake of a 90’s trend, the quilted coat or jacket is the more chic and sleek version of the puffy jackets from yester-year. It keeps you warm and the new modern styles are more streamlined and flattering. Brrr … we think we need one stat!

NYFW – Elie Tahari F/W 2011

imageLacy, sheer, gothic romance. For Elie Tahari’s Fall/ Winter 2011 collection, it was all about luxury and drama with flowing layers of chiffon, peek-a-boo lace and high, stiff necklines.

Silhouettes of free-flowing fluid fabrics were seen in dresses and wide leg trousers and balanced out with form-fitting, intricate lace bodices.

From gauzy layers to equestrian inspired looks, Elie Tahari took classic fall and winter colors of browns and taupes, dramatic black and luxe white and infused them with a great eye for detail. Perfect draping and flattering bias cuts, plus fur trim, leather and subtle leopard prints gave the collection it’s edge.

NYFW – Alexander Wang F/W 2011

imageAlexander Wang’s Fall 2011 ready-to-wear collection was fierce and striking as ever! This creative genius never fails to hit the mark and his edgy jackets with fur details and leather pants would make any downtown girl swoon!

We can already picture the coming months of street style girls wearing these combo ponchos in a sort of Clint Eastwood meets Carine Roitfeld chic. Black was at the forefront for color choices with occasional pale pinks and rich grays making guest appearances.

It was a collection of juxtapositions with rough nylons, tough leathers and smooth silks gracing the runway and flowing silhouettes mixed with stern and strructured lines, giving the collection an overall feel bi-polarity that we just can’t get enough of!

Couture Spring 2011 – Elie Saab, Jean Paul Gaultier, Valentino

imageFor day three of the spring 2011 couture shows from Paris, Elie Saab created ooh-and-aah worthy confections that were just aching for a little red carpet, Jean Paul Gaultier rabble-roused with a punk-meets-Pigalle-inspired show, and the house of Valentino presented moody Victorian-era separates.

Label Love – Louis Vuitton S/S 2011

imageVibrant hues, sumptuous satins and silky knits, Oriental inspired cuts and details, bold animal and floral prints and an overall feel of 1970s luxe took over the runway for the Louis Vuitton S/S 2011 runway show.

Dresses and silhouettes that celebrated a woman’s shape and curves were detailed with mandarin collars, thigh-high slits and bold color blocking. Jumpsuits and one pieces featured plunging necklines, metallic shimmer and colorful blocking, with voluminous, billowing fabric and cinched waists all around.

With the Asian-inspired influence, colorful animal and floral prints and sophisticated sensuality, the entire collection was reminiscent of a nonchalantly luxurious and fashion forward Shanghai from it’s hey-day as the Paris of the Orient. Label Love – Viktor & Rolf S/S 2011

imageWhen one anticipates a Viktor & Rolf show, it’s expected that their will be outrageous pieces, crazy silhouettes and unexpected details that will challenge you ideas on conventional fashion, or at the very least, make you sit up and take notice. Their latest S/S 2011 runway collection was no exception, with pieces seemingly inspired by Alice in Wonderland on even more hallucinogens and in the midst of a huge Mad-Hatter hosted wedding reception.

Vertical striped of bold blue and shiny red, oversized shoulders, exaggerated asymmetry and multiple, enlarged cuffs and other whimsical details made the collection truly unique and gave it a healthy dose of fun, which is signature for Viktor & Rolf. But once you get past the humor and eccentricities, it’s obvious that these garments are full of intricate details and true skill and talent in the construction. Personal loves were the shirt dresses in varying styles and the frothy use of fabric and ruching. Satin fabrics were made into crazy wedding-style gowns that looked appropriate for the weddings of the likes of Rihanna or Lady Gaga, especially the finale piece.

Viktor & Rolf S/S 2011 collection is one piece of art after another and while many of the ensembles seemed too outrageous for everday wear, many of the pieces, when separated, are completely wearable for the fashion conscious! Click the slideshow to see some Viktor & Rolf S/S 2011 faves!
