Pump Up The Volume

Photographer Marcus Gaab makes animated still lifes using the RED Epic

Pump_Volume3.jpg Pump_Volume1.jpg

Seeing the RED Epic camera drop was pretty exciting, but seeing how directors and photographers are putting it to use keeps us inspired. We spotted an innovative use in the WSJ Magazine‘s November “Innovator’s Issue,” with photographer Marcus Gaab‘s “Pump Up the Volume” neon fashion accessories story, which he shot in video. Gaab explains the process behind the images: “We pulled single frames from these short movie sequences. We then composed them into a collage to show motion in a still picture.”

The result is a great new twist on still life photography, thanks in part to the stark black backdrop and hypnotic layering of eye-popping color. Gaab’s other work, specifically I Love You, a German magazine that he publishes with his wife, is also worth a look. Check out the video of the shoot at WSJ Magazine online.

Cool Hunting Video Presents: The Maze

A behind-the-scenes look at LA’s hidden haunted house

While recently exploring the southern coast of the Golden State we ended up in the Los Angeles neighborhood of El Sereno where artist Albert Reyes gave us a behind-the-scenes look at his yearly Halloween project. Since 2004 Reyes has built a Halloween maze in his backyard for a party in celebration of America’s favorite pagan holiday. Over time, the maze has evolved from a blanket tunnel held together with sticks to a full, free-standing structure, guaranteed to spook the drunk, stoned and sober alike. We got a special glimpse of the maze in daylight to learn about the scavenged materials and secret passages, and follow the process behind this bizarre installation.

Throughout the rest of the year, Albert creates pop-culture and political-satire prints on paper, which are available online from Mastodon Mesa

Core Deco

Matt W. Moore’s Op Art takes on new forms in his most functional venture yet
core-deco10.jpg

From what we’ve seen from Matt W. Moore, the Portland, Maine-based artist behind MWM Graphics, he leaves no question that he’s rabidly productive. And now, he’s taking his signature “Vectorfunk” optical artwork one step further into a new dimension (literally) with the debut of a four-piece collection of design objects called Core Deco. Created with the help of friends skilled in different disciplines—from manufacturing to silkscreening—the inventive ceramic tile coaster set, shelves and jacquard afghans are all made in the U.S with function as their goal. We talked to Moore about the story behind his designs and the unusual approach he took to the brand’s site.

core-deco13.jpg

How long did it take to develop the collection?

Core Deco has been years in the making. I’ve always had a desire to design and produce functional design, furniture and home goods. This past winter I decided to go full speed ahead with it.

Core-Deco1.jpg core-deco2.jpg
What challenges did you encounter when transforming your designs into three dimensions?

I am pretty good at imagining how a graphic or mural will look in an environment before it is created. But for the three-dimensional products I have been making cardboard mockups… Learning the benefits and limitations of a manufacturing process is the best way to push it as far as it can go.

core-deco5.jpg core-deco6.jpg
The presentation of your products on the site, especially the videos, is refreshing.

Doing the videos is a great way to show the dimensionality of the 3D items. Seeing how products exist in their environment is crucial and photos simply cannot tell the whole story. Especially the Diamond Corner Shelf. The shadows and geometry of it are awesome as you walk past it. With the Ceramic Tile video we are hinting at how awesome a bathroom or kitchen backsplash would look with a full-on mosaic of the tiles.

core-deco14.jpg

What influenced your designs?

My travels have really informed my design sensibility and the aesthetics that I gravitate toward. The tile mosaics of Spain and Brazil. The modern architecture of Moscow and Seattle. The beauty of nature and the juxtaposition of organic forms with man-made geometry. Coming into this realm of product design as an outsider has proven to be exponentially educational and exciting.

What are your plans with the range?

I plan to launch a new collection of goods each quarter, always focused on unique functional design.

core-deco8.jpg

In 2012, we’re planning some pop-up shop experiences around the Northeast. That will be a lot of fun, to go into an empty environment and trick it out with Core Deco goods — to really show how it all works together. We’re definitely open to building retail relationships with boutiques that share our vision.

Cool Hunting Capsule Video: Zwilling Pro

Our behind-the-scenes video at one of the world’s biggest and oldest knife factories

Zwilling J.A. Henckels recently gave us the opportunity to stop by the factory in Solingen, Germany to see the production process behind their new Zwilling Pro knife series. The Pro, created by architect and designer Matteo Thun, signals the brand’s move to bring high-design elements into an affordable kitchen accessory. Using lower-grade steel on bodies similar to the knives of the higher-end series, the new knife offers a superior culinary experience with its specialized bolster (the curve where your hand sits). We spoke with Chief Technical Officer, Dr. Joachim K. Droese to learn more about the production process and get a taste of the lasting power of properly-constructed steel tools.
