In collaboration with Montreal’s urban boutique Off The Hook, the first Vans partner store in Canada will open tomorrow at one of the busiest corners in the city. Not only will it offer the best selection of Vans in Canada with more than 1,500 shoes in 160 styles from the Vault, California, Classics, OTW, Girls and Surf collections, but it will also have the exclusive option to make custom shoes (previously only available to U.S. online customers) in-store that will be ready to pick up and wear in just a few weeks. To celebrate the launch, guests got word of the opening party via laser-etched invitation and a classic Vans Authentic printed in 3D by Consult Design, signaling the long line of thought put into the new boutique.

Manha

Woodworking scraps-turned-fashion in Navajo-inspired necklaces
miju_manha_2.jpg

The side project of CH contributor Mike Giles and his girlfriend Judy Lawrence, Miju jewelry is a peek into how the two mix Mike’s furniture design with a creative Montreal-based partnership. For Fall/Winter the duo created “Manha”—an 11-piece assortment of laser-cut wood gems.

Of the Native American-inspired collection, one of our favorites is the “T-Bird necklace” (also available as a brooch). Taking the classic Thunderbird silhouette, the duo then added detailed etching for geometric texture and an overall appealing design. Painted either gold or a combination of red and blue, the necklace hangs at a perfectly situated place across the collarbone, allowing for full visibility that works with a variety of necklines.

Each piece in the collection is made from solid walnut—remnants from other designs Giles creates in his Montreal-based woodworking shop, Furni. The Manha collection sells online from the Miju Etsy site, with prices starting at $36.

Vintage Frames Company

One of the most esteemed purveyors of classic eyewear gets an online store
bgbodycolora.jpg

To score a sunglasses fitting with the exclusive Vintage Frames Company, it wouldn’t hurt to be a hip-hop mogul or Russian princess. But now the largest distributor of its kind is offering hundreds of choice styles each month—from legendary labels like Alpina, Carrera and Silhouette—to the masses through its just-launched webshop. “The point [is] to offer a selection of frames to the public who have been dying to purchase them for the past years,” says owner Corey Shapiro.

Alpina_GenesisProject.jpg RayBan_Cats.jpg

Based in Montreal, Shapiro and his team of fashion historians search the world for deadstock designer eyewear. His warehouse has more than 150,000 mint-condition frames, spanning the 1950s to the 1980s. “Old eyewear manufacturers took time and love to produce eyewear,” explains Shapiro. “Any of the handcrafted details put into eyewear cannot be added to today’s eyewear, as those factories have long been closed.”

Nostalgia and manufacturing techniques aside, Vintage Frames has become a leader in shaping optical trends, as their reputation as a highly sought source of long-lost classic and original models has grown. “We also run a rather large division aiding today’s new eyewear designers through a historical look of eyewear, renting them all kinds of frames as production samples,” adds Shapiro.

VintageFramesCompany_Cazal951.jpg Silhouette_3073.jpg

Such tight relationships with brands makes for a pretty amazing commemorative reissue as the label celebrates its fifth anniversary this month and online grand opening with a collaboration. “We have made a very special Cazal 951, which is the first frame I ever owned in my collection,” he says. “The status of a man in a certain crowd could be judged by how deep he went into accessorizing his 951. Diamonds, snakeskin, leather, gold—all that!”

Visit the Vintage Frames Company’s webshop for this month’s selection before it’s gone.

And All the Tigers

HoofandHeel1.jpg

Consisting of Harris Shper (on vox and guitar), Christine Hale (vox and keys), Al Mal (bass) and Farid Rener (drums), The Hoof & the Heel make unforgettably beautiful music that fits easily on dreamy summer playlists. Based out of Montreal, the quartet’s EP called “And All the Tigers” mixes folksy, poppy, hauntingly magical sounds to create some incredibly captivating tunes. We recently sat down with them down for a few questions, answered below.

Who’s the Hoof and who is the Heel and why?

This is a question we get a lot. Let’s just say Farid is both for now.

What’s the best show you have played?

Hard to pick just one, but an incredibly fun show was not too long ago at the Interstice loft in Griffintown. We played with Gutstrings and Peter Nevins, and everyone was just having a great time listening to music. There was no stage, so we were very close to 100 people dancing right in front of us and the energy was fantastic!

HoofHeel_Poster1.jpg HoofHeel_Poster2.jpg
How did you meet?

Farid and Harris met through a mutual friend, then met Christine through a local promoter. She met Al when their names were picked out of a hat to play together in a band for Pop Montreal’s Rock Lotto, and voila!

HoofHeelBand1.jpg

Favorite song of all time (each of you) and brief description why?

Harris: “A Damn Good Disguise” by The Mendoza Line. Obviously a difficult question, but this is a song I can listen to forever and not get tired of. If I listen to it when I’m happy, I get happier. If I listen when I’m sad, I get sadder. It has a very simple melody and a lo-fi production, and the lyrics are beautiful and ugly and perfect.

Christine: I have two—”Jesus, Etc.” by Wilco because of Tweedy’s lyrics, voice and the overall production—and “Wally, Egon & the Models in the Studio” by Rachel’s because the cello somehow wraps around my heart and squeezes. Sometimes you just don’t have words for how music makes you feel. Both are so bittersweet, simple and honest.

Continue reading and check out a video after the jump.

Upcoming tours or plans?

NXNE in June, U.S. tour in July/August, mixed with local shows as well. Recording, writing, etc.

Why Montreal?

Love this city! So many creative, kind, beautiful people and the cold just makes us enjoy the summer more.

What gets you out of bed in the morning?

Work. [Harris is a recording engineer; Christine is an illustrator/designer.]

Who writes the songs?

Because it’s been hard to get us all in the same room at the same time other than practices and shows, Harris been writing the melodies/lyrics so far, and then we all work out arrangements very quickly in our practices. We all usually write our own parts with input from everyone in the band once the song is put on the table.

Anything else we should know?

Share our music with friends—if you don’t have enough cash at the moment to buy it from iTunes or the like, send us an email and we’ll send you a digital copy of the album! We love having people come out to our shows and want everyone to enjoy the music, thanks!
