The following information is from the architects:

Shelf-Pod is a private residence located in Moriguchi City, Japan. The client owns an extensive collection of books on the subject of Islamic history, so he requested us to design this architecture not only for living, but would have the maximum capacity for its storage and exhibition.

Shelf-Pod by Kazuya Morita Architecture Studio

In order to satisfy this demand effectively, we designed a lattice structure made from 25mm thick laminated pine-board what serves as book-shelve.

Shelf-Pod by Kazuya Morita Architecture Studio

The dimensions of each shelf are as follows: 360mm height, 300mm width and 300mm depth. All of the architectural elements in this space (stairs, windows, desks, chairs, etc) have been designed on the basis of this shelf scale, with the aim of achieving geometrical harmony that is comparable to Islamic Architecture.

Shelf-Pod by Kazuya Morita Architecture Studio

This innovative structural system affords not only large amount of book storage, but the possibility of flexible floor level which is delivered from height of bookshelf. Each space for different activity rise up helically, giving the impression of exploring a wooden jungle gym.

Shelf-Pod by Kazuya Morita Architecture Studio

The original image of this structure is derived from the Japanese woodcraft of Kumiko. The structural integrity against the earthquake is provided by a panel of plywood board nailed on the shelf. Initially, the horizontal resistant force guaranteed by the panels was examined in a real-scale model.

Shelf-Pod by Kazuya Morita Architecture Studio

Further to this, an analysis of the whole structure was performed in order to determine the placement of the windows and panels.

Shelf-Pod by Kazuya Morita Architecture Studio

The inter-locking laminated pine-board was manufactured precisely in advance and assembled on-site. Similarly, the pyramid-shaped roof was assembled on-site, from 12 pieces of prefabricated wooden roof panel.

Shelf-Pod by Kazuya Morita Architecture Studio

The completed roof has a thickness of only 230mm and sensitively covers the whole space like the dome of a Mosque.

Shelf-Pod by Kazuya Morita Architecture Studio

As oppose to its unique structure, the outer wall employs the construction techniques of a traditional Japanese storehouse Dozou.

The bamboo net wall foundation layer was attached to the lattice structure and the clay and straw mixture was applied to the foundation by the trowel. Then the red cedar panels forms exterior wall.

Shelf-Pod by Kazuya Morita Architecture Studio

The interior clay wall was finished with white plaster. These techniques are in accordance with urban fireproofing specifications, as well as maintaining a suitably humid environment for the storage of books.

Beauty Pick Me Up – Shiny, Healthy Hair!

imageNo matter what the hair trend is at the moment, shiny, healthy hair will always be in! It doesn’t matter if you’ve got a a shaggy pixie cut or a mane of long tresses, hair that shines is the perfect accessory to any ensemble.

In an effort to get the perfect coif, we often apply many products, chemicals and heat treatments to our hair, which weakens and dulls the cuticles. Take a break from the hair sprays, molding waxes, straighteners, hair dyes and blow dryers and take a look at our 5 easy tips on how to give your hair that healthy shine and bounce back! Click the slideshow to see some fave products!

Switch Up The Shampoo – You may already have the best salon-level shampoo and conditioner for your hair, but that’s not enough! By switching up your shampoo and conditioner, you don’t let your hair get accustomed to the same pH balance for too long, which can leave hair flat and dull. Every third hair wash, switch it up with another label!

Argan Oil – This Moroccan oil is the new not-so-secret secret to shiny and healthy hair! Towel dry hair and rub a pea sized amount in between hands and smooth through hair. Got longer locks? Try a dime sized amount! This amazing oil leaves hair smooth and shining and conditions naturally! Argan has multiple uses as a skin conditioner as well and ingesting it allows for the full benefits of it’s vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidant properties!

Deep Conditioning Treatment – Using a deep conditioning treatment in place of your regular conditioner once a week really adds shine! Hair masks and deep conditioners are meant to be left in for longer and penetrate to nourish dry locks.

Heat Protection Serum – While giving your a hair a break from heat treatments is a good idea, some of us just can’t step out of the house without a good blow out or straightening. To minimize damage and add a protective layer from the damaging heat, spray on a heat protective serum or spray first!

Change Your Diet – While there are many products out there that can make hair sleeker and shinier, there’s nothing that beats eating the right foods to help nourish hair from the inside out! Drinking lot of water is a must and other foods like salmon, nuts, seaweed and leafy greens make hair, skin and the body healthier overall!

David O’Reilly’s The External World

David O’Reilly‘s incredible animation The External World is a seriously dark but occasionally funny meditation on the anxieties and fears entrenched in modern life.

The film premiered at last year’s Venice Film Festival, and is currently playing at various festivals around the globe, but was posted online for the first time yesterday. The version that O’Reilly has posted is, according to his website, updated with a couple of scenes that didn’t feature in the original. The External World was co-written with Vernon Chatman, and features cameo voiceovers from Julian Barratt and Adam Buxton – see if you can spot them!

Bag of the Week – Change of Heart Purse

imageOne day he’s great, the next he’s not. Today you love him, tomorrow you don’t. We get it – emotions can flip at the drop of a dime. And while it might be frustrating, it’s comforting to know you don’t have to decide how you feel about your latest beau immediately. Especially when you can keep your mind focused on this flashy little coin purse and all of the goodies you’ll keep inside it!

So whether your heart beats for the one you love or not, at least you’ll have a shiny red heart to carry around with you … no matter where life goes and who gets to spend time with you in it.

Who Found ItSusanY was the first to add the ‘Change of Heart Purse’ to the Hive.

Isn’t it tweet?

Orange is turning people’s Tweets into little animated love stories for Valentine’s Day. Altogether now, “Ahhh…”

“We wanted to do something different for Valentine’s Day. We also wanted to work with a talented animator and see what we could create visually in a short space of time. So we came up with the idea of transforming Tweets into mini animated love stories for users,” explains Rosie Andrews of Poke, the ad agency behind the idea. “People submit their tweets [using #feedlovestories], and a day later, we upload the animations.”

Animators Tom Judd and Ed Barrett only have one day to turn around one animation each (as well as adding music and sound effects).

The resultant films appear on YouTube and The Feed – a website where Orange does ‘social stuff’ such as Secret Portraits, where people’s Twitter profiles were turned into portraits and ‘Singing Tweetagrams’.

Erik Spiekermann Talks Type

It’s mid-week and we’re already beat, so best to let someone else do the talking. The good people at Gestalten have visited Erik Spiekermann, founder of MetaDesign and FontShop, and of course, one of the world’s most famous typographers to “listen to the design genius talk about new visual languages, design processes, the analogies of music and typography, and why we need better client culture.” The bonus? We still think he has one of the best German accents. It’s nearly 15 minutes of quality watching, so get to it:
