Form Us With Love founders launch BAUX architectural products company

Stockholm 2014: the founders of Swedish design studio Form Us With Love have launched BAUX, a new brand taking construction materials such as insulation and turning them into architectural features (+ slideshow).

Jonas Pettersson, John Löfgren and Petrus Palmér of Form Us With Love have teamed up with entrepreneurs Johan Ronnestam and Fredrik Franzon to take conventional architectural products and make them more visually appealing.

“To talk about beauty and construction materials is almost unheard of,” Palmer told Dezeen. “We think that building materials pose one of the best opportunities for design and design thinking.”

Form Us With Love founders launch BAUX architectural products company

Their idea was to use materials that would normally be hidden, such as sound and heat insulation, and rework them as elements that can contribute to a design feature.

Form Us With Love founders launch BAUX architectural products company

“Design hasn’t been an important factor [in this industry], but what we’re seeing now is that buyers such as architects or interior designers are actually asking for design values in materials that are normally purely functional,” Palmér explained. “Currently no one is really meeting those demands.”

The brand’s inaugural product is a type of acoustic panel called wood wool. Made of spruce wood, cement and water, the sound-absorbent material also regulates heat and moisture.

Panels of wood wool are usually covered up beneath other surface finishes, but BAUX hopes architects and designers will create decorative feature walls using the colourful modular elements the company has formed from the raw material.

“At Form Us With Love we did a project with the company that makes the material a couple of years back and it was very well received,” said Palmér. “The problem was that the company had trouble coping with the demand, they were used to local demand and serving local clients, and they couldn’t manage.”

BAUX now handles the distribution. The brand takes the material from the manufacturer, cuts it into six new shapes in two sizes and sprays them in six different colour palettes.

The panels can be backed with magnetic pads to attach them to a metal base surface, so they can be rearranged and replaced.

Pettersson, Löfgren and Palmér set up their Stockholm studio Form Us With Love in 2005. BAUX was launched during this year’s Stockholm Design Week, which continues until Sunday.

Here’s some more information sent us by the BAUX team:

Let us present BAUX!

BAUX is founded on the belief that building materials should be surprisingly functional and remarkably beautiful. BAUX designs, produces and markets construction materials that meet the contemporary expectations of architects, engineers and builders – without compromising safety and environmental standards.

Form Us With Love founders launch BAUX architectural products company

BAUX is a joint venture between entrepreneurs Johan Ronnestam and Fredrik Franzon and the founding members of design studio Form Us With Love: Jonas Pettersson, John Löfgren and Petrus Palmér.

“We think building materials is one of the most exciting design opportuniites out there right now, we’re here to explore an area where design values hasn’t been present before” – says the founding partners of BAUX.

The BAUX Träullit collection of wood wool acoustic panels is a canny combination of form and function. Available in a range of vibrant colours, the BAUX Träullit collection combines excellent sound absorption with a natural capacity for heat and moisture regulation.

BAUX Träullit panels can be combined to create remarkable structural patterns for residential, industrial or public spaces. Benefits include lower energy costs, a reduced environmental impact and a stable indoor climate.

Designed by Swedish design studio, Form Us With Love, the BAUX Träullit collection features six different geometrical shapes, available in two sizes and five colour sets, offering over 240 creative variations! Let’s build!

The design studio looked to create a timeless watch that has the ability to withstand changes in style over time. This resulted in a timepiece which has a classic look designed for longevity. “We wanted to do something that could be outside trends,” says he. “The whole idea is that it’s timeless.”

The watch face has a concave shape and features hour and minute hands with smooth rounded tips. The thinner second hand has a circular ring on the end which counts the seconds using dotted markings on the watch face. “We’re really into typefaces, and we like the look and feel of having numbers,” Palmer says.

Hood by Form Us With Love for Ateljé Lyktan

Product news: these large, modular, compressed-felt lamp shades by Stockholm studio Form Us With Love are designed to create a cosy environment around a table (+ slideshow).

Hood by Form Us With Love for Atelje Lyktan

Seams folded outward around the edge of each panel are connected with small pegs to form the Hood modular lamp shades, which Form Us With Love designed for Swedish lighting company Ateljé Lyktan.

Three different sections are used to create the shades: four corner panels are attached to create a dome, then the shape can be extended by adding curved side or flat top sections.

These formations create vautled coverings that are circular, oblong or chamfered-square shapes in plan.

The light sources covered in acrylic domes hang from thin wires connected to the ceiling wherever four sections meet.

Hood was launched at the Form Us With Love market at Stockholm Design Week last month, during which the studio also presented spun metal lamps for One Nordic.

They’ve also designed a menswear store where accessories are displayed like tools and vases comprised of quartz compound slabs.

Here is some more text from the designers:

Hood is a sheltering lamp that creates both room and light. Designed by Form Us With Love as a voluminous illumination shield as well as a modular LED pendant light, the pendant is addressing a modern atmosphere issue.

Hood by Form Us With Love for Atelje Lyktan

Much like the recent Plug lamp, Hood is built on necessity. Once again bringing a dual function light, Hood meets the basic desire of shutting things out and concentrating light on secluded areas like work-, conference- or dining tables. At the same time, the three-piece modular function lets you build the Hood to whatever size you need. Starting with basic corner units, one can add the compressed industrial felt sheets to scale the pendant for an extensive illuminating form.

“The Hood lamp is more than a lamp. Itʼs a piece of furniture – the size and material has an interesting effect on the atmosphere, making the piece feel so much more than just a pendant lamp”, says Form Us With Love.

Hood by Form Us With Love for Atelje Lyktan

The work on the Hood lamp began three years ago at the Form Us With Love studio. The challenge was to confront the awkwardness of today’s overly undressed communal areas. The solution was found when trying to absorb the focus around the conference table in the design studio. “Open areas become the ultimate flexibility, but emotionally it is not always preferred. In Scandinavia, most offices are too bare and you only have your laptop screen as your protective shield. Hood is built around the emotional value of a shelter, where the intimate room is protected, letting you keep the landscape view”, says Form Us With Love.

“The desire to enable people to improve their quality time by creating a room in a larger room, is much more than merely illuminating things. Comfort should be for everyone. When you sit under the hood you relax and start to think differently, protected by the form and provided with the warm light you feel at ease”, Form Us With Love concludes.

Levels lamp by Form Us With Love for One Nordic

Stockholm 2012: Stockholm studio Form Us With Love will launch a tiered spun metal lamp for Finnish brand One Nordic at Stockholm Furniture Fair this week.

Levels lamp by Form Us With Love for One Nordic

The Levels lamps are made in three parts that stack inside each other for transportation but can be assembled without tools.

The folded-over rim of each part allows the shades to hang from each other.

Levels lamp by Form Us With Love for One Nordic

“At the factory the metal sheets used for the lampshades are spun and pushed around a rotating mandrel until they reach perfect circle forms,” say Form Us With Love.

Levels lamp by Form Us With Love for One Nordic

“At the very end of the spin you give the shades a fold to support the structure,” they continue. “The spun fold gave us the idea of making the different sized shades hang from one another, allowing for the parts to be stacked when transported.”

Different sizes of shade can be combined in various configurations and they come in three colours: white, grey and copper.

Positioning themselves somewhere between high design and flatpack, One Nordic launched at last year’s Stockholm Furniture fair with the aim of “shipping as little air as possible” while still making their products simple and intuitive to assemble.

Form Us With Love created the Bento chair for One Nordic’s first collection, which assembles with one large bolt under the seat rather than fiddly screws or glue.

Dezeen Watch Store: No.1 by Form Us With Love for TID Watches

No.1 by Form Us With Love for TID

Dezeen Watch Store: Swedish design studio Form Us With Love has launched a watch for new Swedish brand TID Watches – and the first ten customers who pre-order the watch at Dezeen Watch Store will get special-edition signed packaging by the designers (+ interview).

No.1 by Form Us With Love for TID

No.1 is the first product by TID Watches, which is Swedish for “time”, and Form Us With Love has designed it to be timeless and durable.

No.1 by Form Us With Love for TID

“We decided that the most important thing was to design a watch that would look good with any outfit and that you could wear everyday, and not throw away in three months when that fashion is over,” said Petrus Palmer of Form Us With Love (see interview below). “It is a big watch. It’s a steel watch, it won’t break, there are no loose parts, there is no connections for the wristband and so on.”

No.1 by Form Us With Love for TID

The watch features a black, ion-plated stainless steel case with either a black or white face and a woven nylon wristband. No.1 is available to pre-order now at Dezeen Watch Store. Buy now for £162.50 excluding VAT. We now offer FREE SHIPPING on all UK orders.

No.1 by Form Us With Love for TID

Here’s an interview with Petrus Palmer of Form Us With Love (above, right), conducted by Dezeen editor-in-chief Marcus Fairs:

Marcus Fairs: You’ve designed a watch for a new Swedish brand. Tell us about TID.

Petrus Palmer: It’s two guys from the fashion industry. They wanted to invest in a new company and they wanted watches as they are products that last. Fashion is so quick; you can’t keep things alive for more than a month or a year. With watches you can go with the same product for a longer time; you’re making products that will last.

Marcus Fairs: Tell us about the watch you’ve designed.

Petrus Palmer: Basically we wanted a watch that hasn’t been done before. There have been so many nice watches that have been done, and there is so much engineering and talent that is put into watches. So we didn’t really want to go down that alley and try and compete with the best in watch manufacturing. Our approach was rather to do something that we ourselves would like. It’s also a watch that everybody can afford.

We decided that the most important thing was to design a watch that would look good with any outfit and that you could wear everyday, and not throw away in three months when that fashion is over. It is a big watch. It’s a steel watch, it won’t break, there are no loose parts, there is no connections for the wristband and so on. The surface of the steel has been bombarded with ions to give it a really durable black finish. It has a good Japanese movement.

So it is a really good watch; it will last. You can easily change the wristband, if you want a leather one, or if you want to buy your own; we could launch other wristbands later on.

No.1 by Form Us With Love for TID

Marcus Fairs: The designer watch market is expanding really quickly. Which other designers or models do you admire?

Petrus Palmer: The Braun watches and clocks; the designs by Dieter Rams. That is the kind of watch we want to do, that is our inspiration.

Marcus Fairs: And I understand you have agreed to do some signed additions for Dezeen Watch Store customers? That is very kind of you. What is your message to them?

Petrus Palmer: I would love to see them use it, as it is the first watch we are launching. I would love their feedback, actually. Tell us what you think, and be honest, because we really want to do something that you wear because you like it and you want to keep it. Give us your feedback and we will try to be better.

Below is some text about the watch from TID Watches:

”Tid” is Swedish for time. TID is a small Swedish design brand with a big ambition – to produce iconic products designed with time as a principle parameter. TID is now launching their first product, befittingly a timepiece. The No.1 wristwatch is a black ion plated milled stainless steel watch designed by Stockholm based studio Form Us With Love:

“The idea of designing No.1 came from the somewhat paradoxical insight that wristwatches had become obsolete. The wristwatch lost its essentiality when devices for showing time moved into everyone’s pocket. Now the wristwatch is one of the few pieces of jewelry many carry, its main function being to serve as the icing on your outfit cake. As product designers influenced by the Scandinavian tradition of functionalism, we where intrigued by this fact.

No.1 by Form Us With Love for TID

“Faced with the challenge of designing an object, when that specific object’s raison d’etre was very much in question, the design studio turned its focus in a more philosophical direction – how do you design for time? No.1 is the first result – an iconic watch that aims to withstand shifts in times and styles.” – Form Us With Love

No.1 comes in stainless steel with black ion plating – a resilient deep surface treatment. The inside holds a Japanese quartz clockwork. The accompanying NATO wristband in woven nylon is attached without screws or hinges. The watch is available with white or black face.

In today’s society, it seems like we’re always in need of a plug socket to charge our computer, tablet or smartphone. ateljé Lyktan presents a solution to this everyday problem – a lamp with a bonus of an electrical socket.

Plug Lamp by Form Us With Love for Ateljé Lyktan

The design studio Form Us With Love came up with a simple idea based on the new need in today’s society of constantly needing to recharge computers and smartphones. Besides giving you an electrical socket, the Plug Lamp also gives a pleasant aesthetic to the process of recharging.

Plug Lamp by Form Us With Love for Ateljé Lyktan

By integrating the socket in the lamp it also takes away that annoying process of searching for a socket or having to unplug something in order to access an electrical point, says Form Us With Love.

The Plug Lamp has a bulbous shape and a base in moulded and powder-coated aluminium. Here the plug socket is displayed centrally, making it a decorative detail. The light itself is concealed by an opal glass shade and the lamp is dimmable.

The Plug Lamp is great for public places like hotels, cafés and restaurants where people usually are in search for a place to recharge their electrical devices. But it’s also perfect for the home, for example on the bedside table, says Thomas Holm, Marketing Director, ateljé Lyktan.

Available colours: Green, red, grey, black, white

Silestone Slab Vases

Form Us With Love and Cosentino present a project exploring the quartz surface Silestone. Silestone Slab Vases were showed at the exhibition Form Us With Friends at the Swedish Museum of Architecture during Stockholm Design Week. The project aims to break away from the familiar Silestone slab form and explore the material’s tactile dimension.

The Slab Vases consist of rings of Silestone, which have been slipped over a metal bracket to create a sculptural vase. The rings vary in size and are cut so the shape of the vase changes with each assembly. The material is of Iberian origin, but Scandinavian sensibilities run through the Slab Vases project.
