Recession Chic: Designer Denim for $100 Or Less!

imageJeans and denim have long been a wardrobe staple, especially here in the U.S. of A. As the go-to garment from cowboy casanovas to soccer moms, jeans have definitely enjoyed their time on the spotlight. Then, not too long ago, denim suddenly went designer. Instead of shelling over the same amount that you’d spend on a lunch date for a pair, many of us started giving up an arm and a leg for the newer more flattering cuts of designer denim. From skinny leg to straight, flared or distressed, denim went from comfortable casual wear to being appropriate for more fancy night outs and a way to show just how stylish you really are. Now that the new-ness of designer denim has worn off, it’s time to realize that, while the new denim make-over has jeans looking sexier and more flattering than ever, it’s just a change of style and the suddenly hefty price tags attached are quite unnecessary. Check out the slideshow to see some super stylish, uber-flattering designer denim in every style, for just a fraction of what some of the other labels are asking for!

Milan Design Week 2010 Preview: Mindcraft10, Would You Mind?

div style=”align: right;”img src=”http://s3files.core77.com/blog/images/2010/03/mindcraft10-mathiasbengtsson.jpg” width=”468″ height=”502″ alt=”mindcraft10-mathiasbengtsson.jpg”//div

pa href=”http://www.danishcrafts.org/”Danish Crafts/a will be presenting a href=”http://www.danishcrafts.org/visArtikel.uk.asp?artikelID=1856″emMindcraft/em/a for the third time in Milan this year, continuing to bring a selection of the best of Danish craftspeople to Zona Tortona. The exhibit, entitled “Would You Mind,” presents an “open-minded approach to form and materials,” representing the edge of formal and material experimentation, while situating craft in a dialogue with art and design. /p

pMathias Bengston’s emPaper Chair/em, for example, mixes both digital and handmaking process to create a chair from recycled paper. Each of the 2000 profiles is coated with a thin film of glue, then stacked together and exposed to both pressure and heat, forming a “homogenous 3-dimensional body.” Bengston uses both black and white paper to highlight the form and lend it a graphic nature./p

pIsabel Berglund’s emCloset Knitter/em, is a completely hand-knit, white closet, containing a chair with a sweater for a seat and a floating wig/light socket. Conflating function, texture, surreality, and occupiability, the work seeks to “move between categories such as design, art and fashion.”/p

div style=”align: right;”img src=”http://s3files.core77.com/blog/images/2010/03/MC10-Katrine-Borup2.jpg” width=”468″ height=”440″ alt=”MC10-Katrine-Borup2.jpg”//div

pKatrin Borup’s emHeavy Metal/em, maybe the cheekiest of all the Mindcraft projects, is a golden ring with a giant rock for a gem, carved by a stone cutter. Not just a visual joke, the ring alludes to an important backstorymdash;in order to produce an ounce of gold, a big chunk of mountain is removed and crushed. Next year, we’d like to see a ring that represents all the gold produced in the world every year, a href=”http://www.howstuffworks.com/question213.htm”said to fit in a 14ft cube./a/p

Can Shepard Fairey Put Up a Mural on Your NYC Building?

miami mural.jpg

Before Jeffrey Deitch officially takes over as director of the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art in June, his New York gallery Deitch Projects will go out with a bang—and by bang, we mean visual crack created by Shepard Fairey. On May 1, the gallery will debut its final project, “May Day,” an exhibition of new work by Fairey. Expect vaguely subversive portraits of revolutionary types such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and “images supporting free speech and bemoaning the U.S. two-party political system, pushing for renewable energy, and critiquing corporate propaganda.” But what would a Fairey show be without a gritty outdoor component? That’s where you come in! Fairey is searching for mural-worthy sites in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Are you interested in having a genuine Shepard Fairey/OBEY mural wheatpasted onto your home or place of business next month? What if we told you that the wheatpaste tasted like Nutella and freedom? Yeah, we thought so. Submit the particulars (including a photo of the site, approximate dimensions, and name of the building owner) to inquiries@obeygiant.com, with the subject line: NYC MURAL.

“Hairy Underwear” goes on sale in Helsinki

pimg src=”http://s3files.core77.com/blog/images/2010/03/hairyunderwearpantswhiteforweb-thumb-468×260-2989.jpg” width=”468″ height=”260″ alt=”hairyunderwearpantswhiteforweb.jpg”//p

pA lot of eyebrows were raised in Helsinki this week when some unconventional undergarments went on sale in a local marketmdash;the images aren’t the most work-safe, so we’ve kept most of them after the jump. An example of the hairy chest tank top can be seen below. /p

p”Hairy Underwear” is the latest work of Finnish art duo “a href=”http://www.tarahtaneet.net/”Tauml;rauml;htauml;neet Auml;mmauml;t/a” mdash;a name that translates to something between “loony ladies” and “nutty tarts,” according to the artists Katriina Haikala and Vilma Metteri. /p

pNeedless to say, the pants didn’t seem to be flying off the shelves, but the work certainly calls into question our obsession with airbrushed beauty and our society’s endemic sexual objectification./p

pCheck out the underwear and the full pants, vest top, hairy tights ensemblemdash;complete with “Bad Face Day” hatmdash;after the jump. Remember, not exactly SFW. /pa href=”http://www.core77.com/blog/object_culture/hairy_underwear_goes_on_sale_in_helsinki_16262.asp”(more…)/a
