Label Love: Hit The Beach Like A Star In L*Space Swimwear

imageWith a line that’s already been in existence for over a decade and a faithful celebrity fan base that includes the likes of Jessica Alba, Cameron Diaz, and Lindsay Lohan, Monica Wise’s L*Space is already a leading brand in stylish swimwear. But just because she’s been in the biz for a while doesn’t mean she isn’t always finding ways to switch things up poolside and keep it fresh on the beach. Drawing inspiration from her native coastal Florida and her current SoCal home, as well as her love for jewelry and girlie embellishments, Wise designs with showstopping sexiness in mind, but still never compromising comfort and impeccable fit! Known for her use of shiny hardware, innovative cuts, ruffles, fringe, and wild prints, L*Space suits are anything but simple, yet are created with both beach bunnies and active surfer girls in mind. She’s even working on expanding the line to include apparel and eco-friendly swimwear for the green gals! For a glimpse at some of the slinky suits from L*Space’s latest collection, check out the slideshow!

A New Pritzker Prize Recipient, This Sunday

0324pritzwin.jpg

You can take your fancy Oscars, your Emmys, or your ho-hum Kid’s Choice Awards. To us, the most important award of the season doesn’t happen until this Sunday, when this year’s Pritzker Prize winner is announced. Arguably the most important architecture award there is, since its foundation in 1979 (which Philip Johnson won) it has turned celebrated architects into starchitects. So who will replace last year’s winner, Peter Zumthor, as the newest addition into this family of legendary builders? We recommend checking in with the Tribune‘s Blair Kamin, who will be “posting a story about the announcement on Sunday at 1 p.m.Central Daylight Time” (that’s about as close to live blogging the Pritzker ceremony as has have been, we’d guess). Our shot in the dark at who might win is kind of a safe bet: local boy Adrian Smith. Given his legacy and the recent opening of his Burj Khalifa, he seems like he’s destine to land the prize at some point. Our wildcard pick is SANAA‘s Kazuyo Sejima, if just because 2009 seemed to be her year and Zaha Hadid is probably getting lonely up there being the only woman to have ever been awarded the Prtizker. Your guesses?

Hylozoic Ground: Canada sends an artificial forest to Venice

div style=”align: right;”img src=”http://www.core77.com/blog/images/2010/03/hylozoic1.jpg” width=”468″ height=”624″ alt=”hylozoic1.jpg”//div

pa href=”http://www.hylozoicground.com”Hylozoic Ground/a, the award-winning installation from Philip Beesley Architect, Inc., has been chosen to represent Canada at the Venice Biennale of Architecture this coming Fall. The installation is immersive and responsive, embedded with a network of Arduino microcontrollers, sensors and actuators. The acrylic lattice, covered with “interactive mechanical fronds, filters and whiskers,” reacts to the movement of the occupants in the space, suggesting a more empathic relationship between architecture and people. /p

div style=”align: right;”img src=”http://www.core77.com/blog/images/2010/03/hylozoic2.jpg” width=”468″ height=”305″ alt=”hylozoic2.jpg”//div

pWe did a little research on the title: Hylozoism is a philosophical idea that life is inseparable from matter, as coined by Ralph Cudworth in 1678. This is a fitting title, very representative of the qualities of the project. As Eric Haldenby, Director Waterloo Architecture Cambridge, puts it: blockquote”This wonderful piece refreshes, or, even, restores the fundamental relationship between the built and natural environments. The work holds out the promise that there will one day be an architecture this deep, vivid and alive.”/blockquote/p

pThe core project team includes architect a href=”http://www.hylozoicground.com/team/index.html”Philip Beesley/a, a href=”http://www.hylozoicground.com/team/andrewhunter.html”Andrew Hunter/a, an independent artist, writer and curator, and a href=”http://www.hylozoicground.com/team/robgorbet.html”Dr. Rob Gorbet/a, Associate Professor of Computer and Electrical Engineering at the University of Waterloo, who sent us this tip in the first place. /p

Mark Langan: corrugated creativity

Mark Langan is a self-taught artist who works in a very particular medium – corrugated cardboard

After being made redundant from a job in the transportation industry in 2004, Ohio-based Langan decided to give art a go. He schlepped unsuccesfully around local art fairs trying to sell whatever he could but realised that unless he could find something unique to do, he was wasting his time.

Then, one day, inspiration struck. “I ripped apart a large box, happened to notice the wavy fluted medium inside and thought I could use this unique material by taking it out of its intended purpose as a package and turning it into a visual art form,” he says. “Neighbours of mine had just moved into a new home and I asked them if they wouldn’t mind saving me their boxes once they had emptied them from the move. I picked up this huge stack, brought them home and started experimenting with them. I created my first abstract artwork titled Max and Lori’s Move and was so pleased with the results I’ve been hooked ever since.”

Langan has found a particular niche recreating company logos in works to hang in their offices.

Each piece takes between 80 and 100 hours and uses entirely recycled materials, although some clients, such as Kellogg, have asked him to work with their own packaging materials.

For each project, Langan will blow up the logo in question using a projector. He then uses a drawing table and T-square to plan out the piece.

Unitasker Wednesday: Cupmen Instant Noodle Figure

All Unitasker Wednesday posts are jokes — we don’t want you to buy these items, we want you to laugh at their ridiculousness. Enjoy!

If it weren’t for instant noodles, I might have starved in college. Back then, I could buy 10 servings for $1. I would add vegetables or meat or even pasta sauce to them if I had some extra cash. I remember months when I ate them twice a day, every day. I continue to be incredibly nostalgic about instant noodles and will make some when the mood strikes.

In addition to being inexpensive, instant noodles are also idiot proof. If you let them sit in water too long, you have soup! If you don’t let them sit in water long enough, you have yummy, crispy noodles! They’re the perfect food for anyone who hasn’t yet mastered basic cooking skills. Which is why I am completely dumbfounded by this product:

The Cupmen Instant Noodle Figure rests on the lip of your steeping noodles and tells you when they’re “done.” In three minutes, the plastic, heat-sensitive Cupmen Figure transforms from a little blue guy into a little white guy. When he’s all white, you know your noodles are ready to eat. Yay, unnecessary plastic doodads!

I prefer to simply poke a fork at my noodles and see when they’re the consistency I prefer. A fork and my eyes seem to work extremely well. If you want to get high tech, you could even set three minutes on your watch, microwave, or timer … things you probably already own, and don’t have to buy or clean or eventually toss into a landfill.

Hsi Huang’s Shopping Bike wins International Bicycle Design Comp

pI’ll never understand why certain fairly major design events don’t post their own photo galleries to draw interest for their future events. So it goes with the A HREF=”http://www.ibdcaward.org/ehtml/history/index.aspx” International Bicycle Design Competition/A, which was A HREF=”http://focustaiwan.tw/ShowNews/WebNews_Detail.aspx?Type=aECOID=201003200015″ won by Taiwanese designer Hsi Huang/A for his Shopping Bike, above; it transforms from a bicycle into a shopping cart, providing an on-board storage bin. Even cooler, after Huang submitted his design, the IBDC surprised him by prototyping one in CNC’d aluminum!/p
