Cartoonist Jeff Koterbas Illustrations to Take Space Shuttle Flight

Like when the President uses piles of pens to sign an historic bill, the taking of objects into space doesn’t really alter anything tangible, it just attaches a sort of fun significance that hadn’t been there before. Such is the case with astronaut Clayton Anderson, who is set to head out on on of the final Space Shuttle missions come April 5th, and will be bringing with him a variety of miscellaneous items, including two illustrations by the Omaha World-Herald‘s cartoonist, Jeff Koterba. Fellow artist, Rod Tornoe of the Political Cartoonists Index spoke with Koterba, asking him what it’ll feel like knowing his work is out there among the stars, as well as just how exactly he got the opportunity in the first place. Here’s his answer for the latter:

Clayton Anderson, the only Nebraska-born astronaut, will be flying on the upcoming shuttle flight Discovery. I first “met” him in 2007 when he emailed me from the International Space Station to tell me how much he enjoyed a cartoon I had drawn about him. Since then we’ve kept in touch. Last fall he invited me to draw two cartoons that he could take on the the shuttle — he suggested that one cartoon be given to my newspaper, the Omaha World-Herald, and the other I could keep for myself. So the cartoon for myself has to do with Dogie the Doggie.

Shoe Of The Week: Report Signature Downey III Sandal

imageWhat shoe genius designed this beauty?? It’s kind of like a peep-toe pump, kind of like a cut-out ankle bootie. It’s kind of like a heeled sandal and kind of exotic, but classic at the same time. It’s kind of amazing and made by Report Signature. The Downey III Sandal is all the latest and hottest shoe trends all wrapped into one gorgeous, versatile, leg-elongating package. Plus, the splash of turquoise and gold snake skin gives it a pop of color and adds an air of exoticism. The crisp white leather is perfect for spring/summer, but doesn’t compete with the many trends already going on, giving the Downey III Sandal an elegant and luxe vibe. Pair it with linen pants or a mini-skirt for a breezily beautiful day ensemble. Or get the black with gold and silver version and strut your stuff for an sexy, edgy nighttime look!

Reverse Trompe L’Oeil

by Max Gold

alexa-meade1.jpg alexa-meade2.jpg

Artist Alexa Meade works in the medium of flesh. The Washington D.C.-based artist, 23, calls her style of portraiture and performance art “Reverse Trompe L’Oeil,” compressing a 3-D space into a 2-D plane by painting directly on models. The resulting photographs of the person within a painted still life makes the illusion complete, an effect that in recent weeks has swept the Internet and landed her in some big name galleries.

Perhaps the biggest surprise is that she doesn’t use Photoshop or any other digital editing tools. “Essentially, I am creating art that imitates life on top of life” says Meade, who graduated from Vassar College last year as a Political Science major. “My political past has taught me that what one experiences cannot always be interpreted at face value; seeing is not necessarily believing.”

Of her live installations, Meade says “I am transforming people into art objects. It is not often that an object can return the gaze of the viewer. Many viewers feel uncomfortable making direct eye contact. There are a lot of sideways glances.”

Postmasters Gallery in New York will include the young artist’s work in the “Mirror, Mirror” exhibition opening 2 April 2010. Also, look for her work in the “Art of Giving” show at the Saatchi Gallery in London this October.

Incredibly obvious tips to save you time

I don’t watch the television show Celebrity Apprentice, but I recently saw an advertisement for it that stunned me. In the commercial, show contestant and former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich is sitting at a computer attempting to type. I use the word “attempting” because it is obvious in the clip that Blagojevich has no idea where the keys are on the computer’s keyboard. A man who has held the highest elected office in his state cannot type (or at least couldn’t type at the time the video crews captured the scene). Forget his scandal, I cannot fathom how inefficient this one man made his state’s government simply because he can’t type. The hours he must have wasted just responding to e-mail!

After watching this advertisement, and then again after reading the article “80 Ways to Steal Valuable Minutes for Your Work Day,” I have been thinking about basic skills that increase productivity — skills that are so obvious and fundamental to my behavior that I don’t typically think about doing them. In fact, they’re so obvious that I really had a difficult time composing a list.

Eleven extremely obvious skills to save you time:

  1. Improve your typing speed.
  2. Improve the legibility of your handwriting.
  3. Write stuff down.
  4. Read the manuals on the software programs you use regularly.
  5. Read the instructions.
  6. Work while at work.
  7. Group like tasks together.
  8. Store items that are used most often in the most convenient places.
  9. When you’re finished using something, put it away.
  10. Learn and use people’s names.
  11. Use a shopping list.

I know that I’m missing even more obvious productivity skills, so please add to this list in the comments. What are the most basic of basic things each of us can do to save time?
