Inspired by student-built and inhabited shelters exhibited alongside the Frank Lloyd Wright: From Within Outward exhibition, the Guggenheim and Google SketchUp put together the Design It: Shelter competition, challenging “amateur and professional designers from around the world to submit a 3-D shelter for any location in the world using Google SketchUp and Google Earth.”

The winners are announced in the video above, but here’s the rundown:

David Mares from Setubal, Portugal took the People’s Prize Winner, determined by popular vote from among here.

Coming up fast: Opportunity Green, November 7-8, Los Angeles

Opportunity Green

There’s just a couple more weeks to register for the Opportunity Green Business Conference, taking place on November 7th and 8th in Los Angeles. The conference aims to inspire “a collaborative culture of new thinking” and “facilitate the movement to transform business for good” by providing “unprecedented approaches to sustainability that are bankable and exciting.”

Sounds pretty good, right?

Even better is the unbelievable speaker list, including Michael Hopkins, the editor-in-chief of the MIT Sloan Management Review; Yves Behar, founder of fuseproject; Adam Lowry, founder of Method; and Helen Walters, editor of Innovation & Design at Business Week.

To supplement the conference, Opportunity Green is running the OG|25 competition, which will highlight the best of innovative green startups. And, just added, is the Tour de OG, a 5 day bike ride directly preceding the event. The ride will raise awareness about green business, and all participants will receive organic meals, campsites and lodging, promotional bike accessories and discounted attendee registration for the conference.

More information and registration guidelines here.

Core77 Forum Topic: Design Vernacular

strong>Featured Forum Topic of the Day:
design vernacular
by IDiot in General Design Discussion

I can not stand when designers (or anyone) use the word “SIMPLISTIC” when they mean simple, clean, minimal, etc. Simplistic is a negative term meaning overly simple, or simplified “to a degree where important details are lost.” Anybody else have any words or terms they hear/see misused that frustrate them?

by Julie Wolfson

blamosilver.jpg

From monsters with solid brass mouths to three headed shark-man-bunny creatures, the handmade creations of Blamo mix elements of designer toys, art and craft. San Francisco-based designer Spencer Hansen, forms Blamo toys from cast solid brass, leather, hand carved solid sugar wood and hand-painted resin.

In October and November, several new characters will make their Blamoville debut.

Hansen made only twelve of the new character “Three Headed Creature,” which changes from shark teeth to a winged double head to a man with bunny ears. On 24 October 2009, the remaining seven will be sold on the Blamo website.

SweatShoppe

Video Style Steal: Black Eyed Peas Take Fashionistas To Another World In “Meet Me Halfway”

imageThe recent Black Eyed Peas singles are overplayed enough for you to notice that their latest album is much more “futuristic”-inspired than their past party anthem compilations. And if you’re just about fed up with hearing the repetitive beats of “I Gotta Feeling” and the laser gun sound effects of “Boom Boom Pow,” you might be relieved that the third single, “Meet Me Halfway,” is considerably easier on the eardrums. But don’t worry — just because the relatively low-key tune isn’t exactly a club banger doesn’t mean it lacks room for drama. The video features the four members isolated in separate parts of the solar system, each looking for a way to reunite. For example, Fergie seems to be stranded in a long-lost dimension that resembles the set for “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” decked out in a shimmery fairy princess gown. While the video wardrobe is pretty fantastical, you can still take a cue from their futuristic concepts to form your own modern explorer and fairy-inspired ensembles, thanks to the funky stylings of Fergie and Will.I.Am. Watch the video to get some intergalactic insight, then check the slideshow for some wearable wardrobe pieces!

Protective case for transporting your bicycle on an airplane

0aerotechevo02.jpg

Living in Japan was expensive, and I made few major purchases during the year I spent there. I had a pretty cool Muji bicycle that I really wanted to bring back to the ‘States with me, but I couldn’t see it making a transpacific journey unscathed, and I sold it before my return, sadly.

I wish I’d had an AeroTech Evolution bicycle case back then. It’s designed to protect your (dismantled) bicycle in the cargo hold of an airplane with its vacuum-formed ABS shell, combined with velcro straps and strategically-placed foam tubing. Even better, it’s got a lifetime warranty that’s valid all over the world.
