Striped Tees And Accessories Make Looking Chic A Snap!

imageIf you took a peek inside my closet, you’d notice two main things: a stack of little/medium/big brown bags that I should probably hide, and an abundance of stripes– striped tees, striped cardigans, striped sweaters, and maybe even a striped scarf or two. Needless to say I’m convinced you can never really have too many striped pieces, and as far as versatile classics go, stripes are easily my favorite. Whether you go for an original nautical staple from Saint James or a contemporary update from Splendid, a well-fitting striped top is the easiest route to chic simplicity and really couldn’t be more effortless. If patterned tops aren’t really your thing, a striped handbag is equally stylish — an iconic hobo from Bendel’s is playful and luxurious to boot. Feeling adventurous? Pair your stripes with another print, like florals (a la this look snapped by Garance Dore). See more striped tees and accessories in my slideshow!

Full-time Faculty in Designed Objects
School of the Art Institute of Chicago

Chicago, Illinois

The Designed Objects program focuses on the critical and creative re-thinking of the tools, furnishings, networks, and products that constitute everyday life. Borrowing from industrial design and disciplines such as systems design, furniture design, experience design and interaction design, Designed Objects envisions and seeks to produce designers as social citizens and cultural agents who choose “the contextualized object” as their primary means of reflecting and affecting our world. While concerned with professional competency within the realm of product design, the program also maintains a more critical and expansive understanding of the production and consumption of objects and products.

Design comp: What can you make out of a sheet of 100% recycled plastic?

0axionpolym.jpg

Plastics manufacturer Axion Polymers is holding a design competition anchored around the manufacturing side of things, specifically, their new product, a 100% recycled polystyrene sheet:

Axion is seeking designs for a novel household product with mass market appeal that could be manufactured from its Axfoil or Axpoly products, which are derived from 100% recycled refrigerator plastic, TV casings or post-consumer electronic games consoles. Entries must be submitted by January 8th 2010.

Ideas could be completely unique or based on improving an existing product on the market, but the crucial element is that they embody the ‘green’ credentials and environmental profile of the material.

“A product made from 100% recycled plastic, such as Axpoly, that can be recycled at the end of its useful life, will have an immediate environmental advantage; saving 90% of CO2 emissions in its initial manufacture and reducing carbon impact over the product’s lifecycle,” says Axion director Keith Freegard.

Created in collaboration with Edun, 15% of the price of the limited edition shirts helps support War Child, a non-profit dedicated to aiding children affected by war.

Roof Collapses at Emily Dickinsons Home/Museum

1029dicroof.jpg

While the MoMA‘s new tower might now be going up, everything else seems to be falling apart. Daniel Libeskind‘s Denver Art Museum is finally getting fixed for leaks and Populous‘ less than a year old Yankee Stadium is starting to crack (as was its team last night — sorry, this writer couldn’t resist). Now just to the north, in Amherst, Massachusetts, another bit of architectural calamity. Homestead, the house Emily Dickinson liked to be reclusive in, suffered a blow this week when part of its ceiling collapsed. The house is part of the larger Emily Dickinson Museum, which has since closed in order to evaluate the damage and see what can be done to get it fixed. Here’s a bit:

The ceiling that fell is not original to the house, [executive director Jane H. Ward] explained — the plaster was laid over wire mesh, not lath — and was probably installed in the 1960s, when the house was privately owned. For once, an overflowing tub was not to blame. “It appears that the plaster just detached itself from the wall,” Ms. Ward said, “but we won’t really know the extent of the damage until the inspection is completed.”

‘House’ for Halloween

The Calgary Cinematheque folks have done it again! Thanks to brilliantly macabre programming, local audiences are being treated to the cult classic House (1977), a Japanese horror show like no other.

Descriptions of the film from the CC website put a fine point on its genre defying strangeness:

“… a psychedelic ghost tale? A stream-of-consciousness bedtime story? An episode of Scooby Doo as directed by Dario Argento? Any of the above will do for this hallucinatory head trip about a schoolgirl who travels with six classmates to her ailing aunt’s creaky country home, only to come face to face with evil spirits, bloodthirsty pianos, and a demonic housecat. Too absurd to be genuinely terrifying, yet too nightmarish to be merely comic.”

If you’re looking for early Halloween frights, be at the Plaza Theatre to get your tickets early. The film starts at 9:15pm Thursday October 29th.

Excerpt: Being a social butterfly

Below is another excerpt from my book Unclutter Your Life in One Week — this time on how to have a social life in this busy world.

This is from the Friday chapter:

“One of my biggest complaints about adulthood is that it’s difficult to simply hang out with friends. In high school, you could call up your friend and say, ‘Hey! A bunch of us are hanging out at Kara’s place. Stop by if you want to hang out.’ No one scheduled ‘hanging out’ on their calendar. No one knew at the start of the night what might transpire by the end of the night. And no one ever left at eight thirty, tapping at her watch, saying she had an early day tomorrow.

When I graduated college, I was completely unprepared for having to schedule time to hang out with friends. The first time one of my friends told me that she had to check her calendar to see when we might be able to grab lunch together, I laughed so hard I made myself cry. Oh, to have so few responsibilities that we could hang out whenever we want!

Review your list from the Foundations chapter that identifies the things that matter to you most. Is spending quality time with friends and family on your list? What else is on your list? Schedule the time now to live the remarkable life you desire.

  • Don’t turn your back on your routines. A little time every day spent on basic routines will provide you with more time in your schedule to pursue the things that truly matter.
  • Plan at least one social event a week. Make a date with your friends or loved ones and keep that obligation. If the people in your life are really a priority, then you need to respect the time you spend with them. Say no to less important requests for your time and keep your date.
  • Plan at least one stay-home event a week. If you’re already a social butterfly, make a commitment to staying home at least one evening a week and taking care of yourself.
  • Keep a list of things you want to do, and do them. Have a list on your smart phone or carry a small notebook with you, and record things you want to do. I have lists of wines I want to try, new restaurants that are getting good buzz, day trip locations, bike trails I’ve discovered, and dozens of other things that have caught my attention. When you’re organized and focused on what really matters, you’ll never have the opportunity to say, ‘I’m bored.’
  • Pay money to take a class. When you spend money on a class, you’re more likely to make a commitment to attending it. If you want to have more variation in your meal plan, take a cooking class at your local cooking school to give you ideas and confidence. If you have always dreamed of going to Rome, sign up for Italian language classes at the local community college to get you prepared. If you wish that you and your significant other would go out dancing, take a ballroom dance class together. If finances are tight, look for free classes listed in your newspaper and make the extra effort to attend.
  • Stop making excuses. You can come up with reasons for why you can’t do something until you’re blue in the face. Instead of wasting the energy coming up with those reasons, use that same energy to find ways to make it happen. You’ll be surprised by your ingenuity.”
