SVA Announces Next Two Dot Dot Dot Events

0224dotdot.jpg

If you’ll recall, we were on hand for the recent School of Visual Artsdot dot dot lecture that featured Gary Hustwit and we had a blast. So we’ve already marked out calendars for their next one, “The Curators,” with a Sharpie, highlighted it twelve times using five different markers, and circled it a half-dozen times with blood red ink. Unfortunately, this resulted in our calendar becoming completely illegible, so we’re using this post to remind ourselves, as well as to encourage you, to get to the White Rabbit on March 11th to see Nicholas Felton, Rebekah Hodgson, Jason Kottke, and Ms. UnBeige 1.0, the charming Jen Bekman. Here’s the description:

Curatorial strategies are spilling out of galleries and museums and into our everyday design practices. As emphasis shifts from designer to consumer, the vital role of designer is often that of mediator, shaping ideas and content created by others into another user experience. How have these new pivots changed the role of designer from one of artisan to one of curator? Four lecturers speak to curation as a way of design life, and how their audiences learn from, are inspired by, and gain insights from it.

Note: their site says the event is already “sold out” but we just received notice from them about the event again, so it’s probably worth your while to find if there’s space available. Worst case, we’ve also been given a peek at the next dot dot dot lecture, which will be held on April 15th, entitled “The Influencers,” and will feature Hillman Curtis, Steven Heller, and Jason Santa Maria. So if you can’t make it in March, make sure to keep an eye out on their events page so you can nab a spot in April.

Grass

Design by Nine99.

Reborn Baby Dolls

alt= //ppI love babies. They’re the most lovable of living things, combining the irresistible traits of unlimited potential and pure innocence. Unfortunately, I don’t have one and can’t afford one anytime soon. I can, however, make do with these incredibly creepy a href=http://www.reborndollhouse.com/Reborn/a dolls. Some even quot;breathequot;. They’re meticulously handcrafted from vinyl and have won the hearts and wallets of women collectors. Spare the children, for they are our unliving future. Yikes!/p

Painter Ann Toebbe

Ann Toebbe’s paintings of domestic scenes and assorted interiors are quite inspirational, giving the feeling of living in a geometric, melancholy collage. The Chicago-based artist’s work shares some of the color, shapes and flatness of Christoph Ruckhäberle, but she leaves out the people and weirdness. In each piece, intricate patterns and simple forms clutter the plane, which make up a uniquely one-dimensional composition.

Record Sleeves Of The Month

Berlin-based design studio, Hort’s work on record sleeves invariably floats our boat and we love the batch of sleeves they’ve recently produced for Jazzanova’s album Of All The Things (which actually came out late last year) and singles Let Me Show Ya and I Can See. Here they all are, with the back covers shown too so you can see how they look too. Also shown is a poster and the album art booklet that has a rather nice embossed cover…

Original ravers, The Prodigy have just released a new album, entitled Invaders Must Die on the Cooking Vinyl label. Art direction and design of the album (LP sleeve with its two inner sleeves shown above) is by Paul Insect.

You can also buy the album as a boxed set of five 7-inch singles (box not pictured)

The hard back book, Money Will Ruin Everything 2, comes with a folded poster acting as a decorative dust jacket – and the 2 CDs themselves, each housed in a delicately coloured card sleeve, are housed in the folds

In 2003 record label Rune Grammofon released a double CD and book called Money Will Ruin Everything to celebrate its fifth anniversary. Now, just over another five years down the line, the label has released Money Will Ruin Everything 2 – a book designed by Kim Hiorthøy that includes new graphic artworks, photos, video stills, seen and unseen sleeve art, a complete label discography, two interviews between Hiorthøy and the label’s founder Rune Kristoffersen, an essay on the label’s record covers by Adrian Shaughnessy and forewords by Rough Trade founder Geoff Travis and Rolling Stone magazine’s David Fricke. Here are some spreads from the book:

When we were in new Nike store 1948 (see previous post) we picked up a copy of The AM90 Sound boxed vinyl pack – adorned with artwork by Dutch illustrator Parra. The box set of eight vinyl records, a book and a DVD is the fruition of a project which saw photographer Shawn Mortensen travel across Europe and hanging out with eight young musicians from different cities who are all fans of Nike’s classic AirMax 90 (AM90) trainer. Each musician provided previously unreleased tracks for their vinyl disc in the box set. Design wise, the eight 12-inch record covers and 12-inch book can be arranged to form a 3×3ft version of Parra’s box top illustration (above).

Organizing food storage wraps

If you’re not lucky enough to have a designated drawer for food storage wraps in your kitchen, you probably have to sacrifice space in your pantry or cupboards for plastic wrap, wax paper, parchment paper, aluminum foil, plastic sandwich bags, freezer paper, cellophane bags, reusable shopping bags, and reusable produce bags. I have to store these items in my pantry, too, and I have been considering the following items to help better organize my space:

Right now, the wrap shelves and the bag holder are what I think I’m going to buy. What do you use to organize your food storage wraps in your kitchen? Or, are you one of the lucky ones with a designated drawer? Tell us about your food storage wrap situation in the comments.

Style Steal: Get Kate Winslet’s Oscar Jewelry Look!

It must be pretty good to be Kate Winslet right about now, and I’m thinking the designer dresses and jewelry have very little to do with that! But given her immense talent and grace, emulating her red carpet choices might just be the closest we come to being like her, and I have a feeling that’s something many are willing to settle for. At Sunday night’s Academy Awards Winslet paired her Yves Saint Laurent dress with stunning Chopard diamond chandelier earrings, which accented her look beautifully without distracting from her gown. We found a similar pair by Slane & Slane for under $500, a teeny fraction of what the Chopard diamonds would cost, at Neiman Marcus- we love how classic and intricate they are. Don’t want to shell out quite so much? We’ve come up with a few much more affordable options, so you can add a little red carpet style to your everyday look.
