Fine Line Displayed

The M-Phone is a unique concept where the display real estate that can give the iPhone 5 a run for its money. However unlike the iPhone, there is a fine metal band that divides the display into two. The band slides up and down and depending upon the usage, it transforms one end into a keypad, gaming control or media controls. People were skeptic if a long slender display will go down well with mobile phone users. Given the way Apple is laughing all the way to the bank right now, such radical and elegant design concepts are the next step in evolution.

M-Concept is a 2012 iF Design Talents entry.

Due: A simple reminder and timer app for iOS devices

When you want to remember to do something — especially something that spontaneously pops into your mind — it’s best to record it as quickly as possible so that it doesn’t float away as quickly as it came. You can do that by using a post-it note, you can put a reminder in your Notes or Evernote app, or you can try Due, a simple (new to me) task and reminder app. I tried the app over the weekend and immediately liked it when I realized that I could get started right away. I didn’t need access to the internet, nor did I need to create an account (great time saver).

Here are some additional features I found helpful …

Easy to create reminders

Creating a reminder is intuitive and requires only two steps: adding a title and selecting the date/time for the alert. The app also offers four pre-set times that you can quickly choose from.

Save time by recycling your reminders

All your old reminders are saved in Due’s logbook so you can track and reuse them by creating new ones (with the same title and reminder times). You’ll save a bit of time by recycling instead of recreating the alert.

Set multiple timers at the same time

Need to check the roast in the oven in 20 minutes or to call a client at a particular time? Want to get that 3-minute egg done just right? Due lets you set a timers for each one simultaneously (something the native iPhone app doesn’t allow you to do). And, you can start the timer with just one tap, or rather, flick of the switch.

There is much more that Due can do (like sync your reminders with iCloud or Dropbox, assignable tones for each alert, integrate with other apps), so take a closer look to see if this app is for you.

Platform: iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch (iOS 5 or later)
Cost: $4.99
Other iOS apps like it: Beep Me (Free for basic version, $4.99 for paid version), Sorted 2 ($0.99)
Android apps like it: QuickTodo Lite (free), Due Today ($2.99)

Five Reasons To Flash A Smile

A camera is best described as a device that records images that can be stored directly and transmitted to another location, or both. We have seen it evolve through the years in both technology and in design. This brings to mind the question, what is the future of a camera in say about five to ten years from now. Will it be minimal or elaborate? One thing is for sure, the cameras of the future will be high on technology but their designing may get radically unconventional. Here is a look at five futuristic concept cameras that give you a reason to flash those pearly whites!

Handsfree Cooking!

The Easystir is an automatic stirrer that allows you to pursue other work while it diligently looks after your dish. Foods like soups, broths and curries require constant stirring and I know for a fact that with some Indian cooking you need to keep on stirring for hours; yes HOURS! The stirring speed is adjustable, it is dishwasher safe and it doesn’t require recharging, battery replacements or plugging at all. It simply uses magnets that react to your induction stove!

Ringing The Images

The CAMER-ing is a discreet digital camera that is designed as a ring. It works in sync with a tablet-esque platform that allows you to sift through what you have captured. The basic idea is to let you capture images on the go without the hassle of the bulk. Also, some radical snapshots can be taken when pictured from the index-finger level! What fun!
