Rokin Footwear

by Miriam Brafman

Rokin-5.jpg

Modern soles with a vintage aesthetic help Rokin Footwear successfully blend traditional European craftsmanship with urban appeal for a stylishly simple and wholly versatile shoe.

Christoffer Brattin—the man behind the Gothenburg, Sweden-based company—launched the first collection of men’s shoes in the fall of 2007. “I started Rokin because I thought there was a need for quality shoes at a nice price for the young urban man. I wanted to do a broad collection of both sports, casual and dressy shoes” says Brattin, a former Tommy Hilfiger Europe footwear designer.

Rokin-1.jpg

Choosing to work only with suppliers steeped in history, Rokin prides itself on delivering high-quality shoes made from natural materials. Design attributes such as the odor-preventing breathable foot beds bring function to sustainability.

Rokin-2.jpg

The utilitarian and timeless air of each style is evident in the current Spring/Summer 2010 collection—an assortment of 66 designs spanning pink suede derby loafers to lace-up leather boots as well as sandals to sneakers.

A small selection of the shoes are available online at Ssense and Urbana.

Big-Ass Message

BAM1.jpg

As an inspiration to all creative types toiling in anonymity, Björn Johansson serves as a beacon of hope. Creator of Internet sensation Big-Ass Message, Johansson attributes his success as a graphic designer to this project and other impassioned (though seemingly dead-end) side projects. Now he freelances full-time for Ogilvy & Mather, one of eight largest advertising networks in the world.

BAMCH.jpg

Johansson got the gig after an NYC Ogilvy & Mather exec saw Johansson’s website Bjernies, which he started for fun with his buddy Johan “Ernie” Öhrn. Among several other great web “experiments,” the collaboration spawned Big-Ass Message, a site that creates—you guessed it—very large messages.

Type in 48 characters or fewer, choose a style (such as Magic, Heart or Jprdy), and Big-Ass Message creates a simple full-screen web message with its own link that you can email. Whether wishing a giant happy birthday or sending vehement insults, the site has already proven wildly popular with traffic reaching over three hits per second at times.

BAM2.jpg

For the future, Johansson intends to continue working on BAM. “My focus right now is to keep developing it. Next on the list is to add more accented characters that are used in Portuguese [Due to BAM’s popularity in Brazil]. And I’m also trying to figure out the best way to add more typographic styles. The whole BAM project basically started as an excuse for me to work with big typography online, so I really look forward to coming up with new cool styles.”

Odeur Spring/Summer 2010: Light

odeur-intro.jpg

Founded in 2006 around a conceptual branding approach “seeking to broaden the opinion of what design really means,” Odeur uses “a unique scent and its molecular structure as a replacement for the traditional, word-based logotype.” The upshot, clothes fragranced with an airy, light smell comparable to CK One and a pyramid-shaped symbol, sets the tone for forward-thinking looks that, this season, incorporate subtly odd details like boat-necked and pleated tees.

odeur-spring2.jpg odeur-10.jpg

Inspired by “sun faded lines and transparent gossamer surfaces,” the Spring/Summer 2010 collection uses a washed-out palate of blues and grays in jersey, building on their last season for a series of oversize tees and deeply pleated bottoms that play to an emerging men’s silhouette. This new proportion—exaggerated tops paired with slimmer pants—works equally well for (and is perhaps inspired by) women.

Odeur sells online from Oki-Ni (which we’re excited to report now also carries P.A.M.), starting at £75. See more images after the jump.

Muungano Baufrica Collection

muungano-1.jpg

Fusing African inspirations with the structure and traditions of Bauhaus, the latest collection from young Swedish design studio Muungano is a vibrant collection of furniture dubbed Baufrica. Founded by designer Peter Thuvander and architect Marting Hedenström, Muungano’s foundation rests on the coalescence of ideas.

muungano-3.jpg muungano-4.jpg

Interestingly, the lamps from the collection draw on a TED Talk by mathematician Ron Eglash, in which he examined the amount African villages structured according to the fractal number series. Taking a pattern from the Sierpinski Triangle, Muungano developed the lamp to tone down the white light given off by energy-saving bulbs, making it warmer and gentler. The geometric pattern is subdued from afar, but once up close the unique pattern emerges, giving the piece even more intrigue.

muungano-2.jpg

Lacquered steel tubing and a waxed wooden base give the modular seating system a depth of usability while extra components like lamps or tables can be added or subtracted to keep a nice fluid narrative through a space. Although softened by a neutral gray upholstery, the pops of punchy color give the pieces their African context—bold and elementary with simple proportions between base and accent color for an overall striking yet pleasantly reserved collection.
