TAF designs light shaped like a poster tube for Zero

Stockholm 2014: architecture studio TAF has designed a light that resembles a poster tube for Swedish brand Zero.

Revealed at this year’s Stockholm Furniture and Northern Light Fair, TAF‘s Poster light is designed to look like the kind of ordinary cardboard tube used to protect posters and other documents. The LED strip light even includes the ridges and cap found on a poster tube.

“For a long time we have been interested in transforming universal and general products into something new and unique,” said TAF designer and co-founder Mattias Ståhlbom.

“For us, keeping the aesthetic reference to something that we all can relate to is a way of making the objects more easily adopted,” he added. “We also found it interesting to work with the pipes concept because these kind of lamps are often hung from ceilings which have lots of existing pipes, like drainage and ventilation and so on.”

The Poster light is made from extruded aluminium and comes in black, white and the colour of cardboard.

This is not the first time TAF, founded by Gabriella Gustafson and Mattias Ståhlbom in 2002 and based in Stockholm, has taken inspiration from cardboard. Last year they created offices for a Stockholm branding and design agency with walls that look like cardboard boxes.

Neither are unusual strip lights a first for Zero: in 2012 Swedish firm Note Design Studio were inspired by a circus trapeze to create pendent lamps for the brand and in 2011 TAF themselves designed strip lights based on the shape of a stretched rubber band for the company.

Office for NINE by TAF

Swedish design studio TAF has created offices for a Stockholm branding and design agency with walls that resemble cardboard boxes (+ slideshow).

Gabriella Gustafson and Mattias Ståhlbom of TAF chose the cardboard motif to reference client NINE‘s work in packaging design.

Partitions made from corrugated metal sheets painted to resemble cardboard were added to create meeting spaces within the open-plan office and existing walls were clad to maintain the paper aesthetic.

“The painted metal sheets create a basic trompe l’oeil effect, like big paper packaging turning into spaces,” Mattias Ståhlbom told Dezeen. “The benefit of using metal is that it is more durable and long lasting than real cardboard.”

Meeting rooms are differentiated by bright orange and green furniture and accessories. “The different colour themes chosen for the furniture create small visible ‘islands’ in the white and paper brown space,” adds Ståhlbom.

The designers also used their own Soft Parcels furniture range made from soft blocks of foam wrapped in fabric that look like paper-wrapped packages to provide casual seating in one of the spaces.

Previous interior designs by the same studio include a shoe store for Camper with tables that look like they’re made from lollipop sticks and a healthcare centre inspired by bandages and plasters.

Japanese studio Nendo has designed an office with meeting rooms surrounded by walls that peel apart to create entrances, while Google has opened a new office in Japan filled with traditional Japanese iconography.

Up by TAF for Muuto

Up by TAF for Muuto

Maison&Objet 2013: Swedish designer Mattias Ståhlbom of TAF has created an uplighter for Danish brand Muuto that can be adjusted by rotating the shade.

Called Up, the product features a funnel-shaped shade that is lower at one side than the other and sits on a baring, allowing it to be rotated freely to alter the amount of light blocked.

Up by TAF for Muuto

“Up lamp mixes light and shadow to create a cosy and warm atmosphere anywhere it is placed,” says Ståhlbom. “Through the profile of the lamp shade, Up elegantly interacts with the surrounding walls and ceiling.”

The lamp features a replaceable warm LED bulb with a dimmer function. It’s made of cast aluminium with a rubber switch at the back, above the flex, and comes in white, grey or green.

Up was launched at homeware and gift fair Maison&Objet in Paris last week. See other new products launched at Maison&Objet here, including ice-cream coloured poufs and rugs by Patricia Urquiola, and colourful glassware by Scholten & Baijings for Hay.

“The inspiration in this case was to show the handicraft that you always see when you look under a piece of furniture in a clear and obvious way,” Mattias Ståhlbom told Dezeen. “This is in order to make the product easier to understand and relate to, and the fact that it turned out to also become a constructional advantage is of course a bonus.”

The pieces are made from natural ash and come flat-packed in a range of three sizes that can be used as tables and stools. The collection is on show as part of the Cabinetmakers Autumn Exhibition at Thorvaldsens Museum in Copenhagen until 2 November.

Trotters by TAF for Pieces

Designers Gabriella Gustafson & Mattias Ståhlbom of TAF have created a collection of storage cabinets and tables for new brand Pieces with large interchangeable feet made from wood, marble or porcelain.

Called Trotters, the series comprises low birch benches and table tops in glass with optional birch cabinets that can be stacked in different configurations.

Pieces are both creators and curators focused on the unique and personal, built through the craft, skill and quality of Swedish production.

Trotters by TAF for Pieces

Pieces was established in 2011 and grew out of a number of ideas that we wanted to develop in a more independent and free context.

Our name reflects our focus on creating individual pieces and objects. Sometimes a single item, sometimes a family.

One, or many, connected or independent. Every piece will be a new narrative.

The first furniture collection from Pieces is “Trotters” – a small family of low tables and open cabinets designed by Gabriella Gustafson & Mattias Ståhlbom from TAF.

Trotters are like characters from a cartoon, or small friends.

Working with proportion and twisting the balance of the expected in a cabinet or table, the attention has been focused on the often forgotten and understated foot.

Playing with simple geometry, the result is both witty and surprising.

By altering only the materials of the foot, the collection provides many possibilities in a very simple way.

The feet are available in wood, marble, or white glazed porcelain, carrying tables and cabinets of wood and glass.

Buoy — Mattias Ståhlbom

A light in the darkness. A friend in need. Mattias Ståhlbom’s Buoy is the designed continuation of a series of fittings with marine references such as Bottle and Fisherman. This year, he starts off with safe things like buoys and fenders, and has Buoy made of glass and spun aluminium. The result is twofold: brittle and safe.
