Channel Your Inner Monster This Halloween With “Where The Wild Things Are”

imageFor a book with only 9 sentences, Where the Wild Things Are sure is making a splash in the fashion world and beyond. Published in 1963, the book has been read by generations and now we get to enjoy a live action feature length movie directed by Spike Jonze this week. Needless to say, the book and movie provides some great inspiration for a Halloween costume. Between the furry monster suit Max wears and the other frightening (yet cute) monsters, it’s easy to channel your inner “wild thing.” Even my favorite boutique Opening Ceremony created a capsule collection based on the characters of the movie. But chances are you’ve already got a fur vest or even some furry boots, so a costume fit for any wild monster is already lurking in your closet! Just add a fur skirt or find some faux fur at a craft store, add a homemade gold crown, and you’re ready to go. Take a look at my slideshow that will have you ready for a “wild rumpus” this Halloween!

Hot In The Hive: Giuseppe Zanotti Swarovski-Embellished Sandals

imageGiuseppe Zanotti was born in San Mauro Pascoli, an Italian town by the Adriatic Sea with a long tradition in shoemaking. He’s been making shoes for over twenty years, first as a design apprentice and now for his eponymous line. His designs are known for being high quality, unique, and of course, totally sexy. One of his latest creations is no exception to the rule. His Swarovski-embellished sandals are over the top and super glamorous. I think they’d be the perfect pair of shoes to wear if you’re going to a fashionable Halloween costume party whether you’re dressed as a witch or even as Victoria Beckham. Of course, if you’re going to spend over $1000 on a pair of shoes, you’ve got to be able to wear them again! You can wear them to get over an ex or to all the holiday parties coming up soon. If you don’t know how to already, start learning how to handle all the compliments you’re going to get!

Price: $1150

Stylehive’s Stylescopes Keep You Fashionable In Faux Fur!

imageWith all of the faux-fur options out there, it’s easy to stay warm and toasty in the fall/winter season. The planets predict that no matter what it is you may be doing, this week involves a lot of time spent outdoors. Whether it’s running errands, last minute business trips, or just hanging out with friends, a little faux-fur will help ward off the chill in the air. Faux fur vests aren’t the only fashionably fuzzy items available and after consulting the stars, Stylescopes has been able to find which faux fur item is right for you! Gemini, your jeans would look great paired with some boots with fur trim. A whole torso covered in faux-fur maybe a little much for the dreamy Pisces so stick to something simple, like a stole to wrap around your shoulders. No matter your style and no matter what the stars have in store for you this week, stay cozy with faux fur! Click on the slideshow to see which faux fur item has been deemed best for you and your star sign!

Hot In The Hive: Philosophy Winter Escape Set

imageWhat is it about festive drinks like hot apple cider and eggnog that gets me into the holiday mood (even when the unseasonable 70 degree weather outside is really betraying my pre-Christmas spirit)? No matter what the forecast, one sip of hot chocolate and I’m instantly transported out of my uncomfortable heels and straight to the ski lodge, all warm and cozy in a Snuggie (or not). But what’s even better — now you can enjoy the yummy winter-warmness of the season even in the shower! Philosophy’s Winter Escape Set comes complete with a trio of peppermint hot chocolate-themed products: shower gel, lotion, and lip shine, all wrapped in an adorable winter cottage box. Sure, it’s not the same as drinking cocoa by the fire (I’m pretty sure downing this won’t taste good), but lathering up with anything cocoa and marshmallow-scented, paired with the comfy steaminess of your shower, is probably the next best thing! The set also makes a super cute gift to anyone who loves at-home pampering!

Price: $25

Label Love: Shakuhachi Keeps It Luxe Yet Laid-back

imageFashionistas hailing from the land down under may have long-since been fans of label Shakuhachi, founded by Aussie native Jessie White, but seeing how far the collection has come from its humble t-shirt line roots, it’s no wonder that that it’s gaining increasing popularity among stateside style mavens. While the latest looks include nearly everything but the kitchen sink — mesh minis, metallic shoulder-padded dresses, and floaty off-the-shoulder frocks — the collection still somehow manages to give a cohesive shout-out to its laid-back beachy origins. With an emphasis on loose fits balanced by feminine details like lace, sequins, and florals, the Spring/Summer 2010 collection seems to pay homage to the modern pin-up girl with cutout details, retro stripes, and cropped tees… not to mention a little boho flair and Asian inspiration thrown into the mix too. With such a variety of designs and details to choose from, both flirty and funky, Shakuhachi covers all its bases with looks you can take to the beach and on the town. Check the slideshow for some of my favorite pieces from their latest collection!

Back-To-School Beauty: 10 Products To Keep In Your Locker

imageYup, it’s that time of year again. The dreaded first day of school is fast approaching. And what better way to soften the blow of having to kiss your summer freedom goodbye than makeup shopping? After all, three-ring binders and dorm room decor aren’t the only things you need to stock up on when it comes to preparing to hit the books again. In order to really be ready for the semester ahead (and treat yourself in the process), you ought to look at some portable locker loot that you can keep on-hand for mid-day makeup emergencies and touch-ups during passing periods. For example, imagine how much sweeter the day would be if you could stop by your locker for a quick spritz of your favorite fragrance or a swipe of blush to add some color to your just-saw-your-test-grade ghostly complexion! Even if you’re way past your locker days, check out the slideshow for some handy to-go products you can keep in your schoolbag, desk, or car for the long and studious days ahead!

Spaced Out: 10 Finds Inspired By The Moon, Stars, And Beyond

imageThere’s water on the moon! Or, well… there’s molecular evidence of its presence. Which doesn’t sound nearly as exciting as “water on the moon,” but still somehow caused me to launch (ha) into a frenzied search for things trendy, wearable, and above all, covered in rockets. And stars. And planets! Interestingly enough, there were plenty of pieces to suit my craving. Tsumori Chisato’s bespeckled tights in cream are so whimsical with their teensy rockets and astronauts, I want to gaze at them all night (instead of staring out of my window). Leifsdottir’s silk sky print skirt is adorned with planets and a single ruffle, and would be so perfect with tights and a wool jacket. And the ‘Stellae’ necklace from Anthropologie satisfies my need for both a statement piece and something out of this world. Not so sure about wearing a galactic getup? Swipe some of Too Faced’s Galaxy Glam eyeshadow (Super Nova is my favorite) on your eyelids and take your smoky eye routine from smudged to stellar. See more space-inspired picks in my slideshow!

Small Space Storage Solutions For The Closet-less Fashionista

imageLately I’ve been looking at apartments with some friends who are looking to move to a new place. While many have spacious kitchens, lots of windows, and large bedrooms, I’ve found that some have tiny closets or no closet at all! I’m certainly not a fan of using the hallway closet to hold all of my clothes along with the vacuum cleaner, but there are definitely options that can keep your clothes safely in your room. If you have a small closet, keep all your dresses, shirts, and pants inside the closet. Then make the most of your free wall space by adding something like the Fleur-De-Lys Hook Rack to hang your jackets and coats. For larger storage solutions for the closet-less, go for an armoire like this bamboo wardrobe (cute dog not included). An armoire may seem like a fortune to spend, but if you get a quality piece you love, you’ll keep it forever. Lastly, for the minimalist (in style and budget), a simple rolling rack may do just fine for less than $20. Take a peek at my slideshow to see it all!

Real Leather Jackets For Under $250!

imageOh, the leather jacket. Never before has one piece garnered so much attention in the “save or splurge” category. You know the pros and cons of each by now, so let’s jump ahead to a much more exciting debate: real vs. faux leather. Faux leather is usually easy to distinguish from real, and a faux jacket can run you anywhere from $40 at Forever 21 to almost $200 at Urban Outfitters. While there are gems to be found, my guess is you’re giving up either quality fabric (not that good faux leather doesn’t exist) or quality construction– two things that can make or break your purchase. Real leather jackets, while often considerably more expensive, are generally going to be of a higher overall quality, regardless of the material, so if you plan on wearing your jacket regularly for more than one season, you may want to invest in the real deal. I’ve found several real leather jackets that retail for less than $250, and if you can dig up a coupon code or are brave enough to play the game known as “I’ll wait ’til it goes on sale,” you can snap one of these up for quite the steal. The trick is to look in places you may not normally frequent! So-called “mom brands” like Ann Taylor, Eddie Bauer, and Jones New York happen to have gorgeous leather jackets that easily rival the trend pieces you’d see in any high-end shop– at about a third of the price. Click on the slideshow to see them all!
