Sustainable Milk Flask

Flasso is specifically intended for countries like India, where milk is usually sold in packaged plastic bags. Glass milk bottles are redundant here and the Tetra Pak varieties are too expensive. The Flasso is basically a milk flask designed eliminate the need of transferring the milk from the pouch to a utensil and then heating it. Easy to manufacture, distribute, maintain and use, this bottle flask will keep the milk fresh and hopefully curb tampering as well.

A milk box by any other name

If you take a milk carton and flip the top upside-down, what do you have? You have a design made by none other than designer Sheau Shiuan Lin. When we first had a peek at this design, it seemed awfully similar to a design we saw just days previous (for some of us) at our children’s daycare center – a milk carton, but with a flat top rather than a peak. Instead, we’ve got something just a tiny bit different.

Have a peek at the fold-up and straw design posted here that goes by the name “StrawIN” and let us know what you think. Is it so close to the original milk carton we use everyday that it cannot be considered new? Or is it simply brilliant?

Popbar

The sweet shop warms up with Hot Chocolate on a Stick
popbar1.jpg

Churning out a flavorful variety of portable ice cream, yogurt and sorbet snacks from their NYC shop, popbar has us hooked on a warmer sweet.

The newest addition to the brand’s all-natural, kosher-certified lineup (including vegan sorbet varieties) is Hot Chocolate on a Stick, a treat as simple and sweet as the name implies. To whip up an instant mug, dip a chunk of dark, milk or vanilla-white chocolate into hot milk, stir for a minute and sip. Popbar’s chocolate-bar consistency seems to blend more easily than typical powder cocoas and, most importantly, does so quickly. Add more milk to temper the sweetness, or split one between two cups for just a hint of flavor.

Hot Chocolate on a Stick is available at popbar’s West Village shop and, for those outside New York, on Amazon for $3 a piece or in gift sets of six for $18 and 12 for $36.

Simpli Oats

A flavor-neutral milk alternative with the healthful benefits of oats

Simpli-oat-milk.jpg Simpli-Oatshakes.jpg

One of the most exciting finds at the winter 2012 Fancy Food Show came in the form of a non-dairy milk made from oats. Oats? Milk? Yes—and the result outshines other alternatives like soy and almond because of its neutral taste and dairy milk consistency. Plus, Simpli Naked Oat retains many of the vitamin and nutritional qualities of the oats. The beverage is available unsweetened, or lightly sweetened and flavored with vanilla.

Simpli also makes the creamier dairy-free, gluten-free OatShakes, which are available in chocolate and tropical fruit flavors, offering a new snack option that can be served cold or warm. As part of Simpli’s mission to encourage healthy lifestyles, they offer an extensive list of gluten-free baking tips and recipes on their website. Both Simpli Naked Oats and OatShakes are available through Amazon where a 25oz box sells for around $5, and at retailers nationwide.

Hot Chocolate for Bedouins

One filmmaking team’s global mission to bring camel milk to a store near you

When a mutual friend connected me with filmmaker Sebastian Lindstrom, he mentioned something about camel milk. A little research brought up several amusing web domains, including a site about camels, BeTheCheese.org, and one about where Lindstrom sleeps, WhatAreWeDoingNowThatWeAreHere.com. But when I met Lindstrom in Manhattan recently and he pulled a bottle of pasteurized camel milk from Kenya from his suitcase, nothing had quite prepared me for the experience.

WTYSL2.jpg WTYSL3.jpg

Heavy and with a taste that transported me to a farm far from the tall city buildings, the beverage is the subject of the Swedish director’s latest project as part of the organization he cofounded What Took You So Long. The Nairobi, Kenya-based team’s mission is to raise questions and awareness about unnoticed issues around the world by telling those stories through documentaries, having already covered thousands of miles in their pursuits. Led by Lindstrom, who’s former Swedish Special Forces, the grassroots bunch crossed the African continent on local transport and trekked through Papua New Guinea.

WTYSL4.jpg

The camel cheese (and milk) project started in Africa, but has taken the team to 18 countries in Asia, the Middle East and Africa. Currently being edited into a feature film, “Hot Chocolate for Bedouins,” portions have also been used to spark discussion and debate in local communities around the world.

WTYSL5.jpg

Why camel milk you may ask? Even drinkable for lactose-intolerant people, the drink is also allegedly extremely healthy, boosting peoples’ immune systems to help fight the effects of many diseases like diabetes, anemia, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS. With the help of WTYSL, the word is spreading, more advocates are popping up around the world for our humped-back friends, and you might just find camel milk next to the two-percent someday soon.

Check out the above exclusive clip for a taste, or Londoners can see “Hot Chocolate for Bedouins”, a 30-minute preview of the forthcoming documentary, at the School for Oriental and African Studies’ Camel Conference. RSVP for free here.
