Papaya Playa Project

A hotel pops up in Tulum

Touching down in the peninsular town of Tulum in southern Mexico, a collaboration of creative European service-industry innovators have launched Papaya Playa Project, a temporary hotel concept born from the pop-up retail model. The collection of 99 beach cabanas maintains a certain level of comfort while retaining the look and feel of primitive, eco-friendly lodgings in a community setting. More of a camp than a hotel, the cabanas will stand for five months on a beachfront formerly owned by a set of luxury hotels that were abandoned in the financial crisis.

The project is led by Claus Sendlinger of Design Hotels, who recently left the buzz of Berlin for the seaside splendor of Tulum. Copenhagen’s 42ºRaw is providing on-the-go sustenance to visitors while KaterHolzig—offspring of Berlin’s Bar 25—handles the main dining experience. To complete the 1960s-commune vibe, Mamapapacola Company has prepared an event series based around Mayan full moon rituals. While we’d like to avoid thinking of Mayans in the lead-up to 2012, this sprinkling of local flavor is undoubtedly entertaining.

The idea of a pop-up is new to the world luxury resorts, and will hopefully serve to bolster the struggling town’s economic situation. Last minute vacation-goers can book their reservations here.


ChocoVivo

Stone-ground chocolate from a bean-to-bar purveyor’s new shop

The recently opened sweets boutique ChocoVivo in Venice, CA exemplifies owner Patricia Tsai’s guiding mantra, “simple is better.” By grinding chocolate from direct-trade growers with lava stones, Tsai is committed to staying transparent in its production after growing concerned over the source and nature of our food. ChocoVivo’s products not only taste good, they’re thoughtfully derived, and each label is printed with information about the geographical origin, bean variety and fermentation period of the ingredients.

From the delightfully clean 75% cacao to special blends featuring limited-run flavors like blueberry and lavender, the chocolate’s simple ingredients create spectacular results. ChocoVivo avoids the temptation to over-process and doesn’t even temper its chocolate, which does result in a slight white film on the surface of its bars but makes for a more natural product. The brand sources its chocolate from a family-owned grower in Tabasco, Mexico, a region with a rich history in cacao production reaching back to ancient Mayan and Aztec times.

In addition to bars, the company also sells their own cacao nibs and novelty items like the Nutella-trumping almond chocolate butter and cacao powder for hot chocolate. The shop also sells assortments of the chocolate products in holiday gift sets.

Evol Bowls and Mini Burritos

Bucking the football-sized burrito, Evol recently introduced a new line of minis to its roster of made-from-scratch frozen burritos and wraps. The three-ounce portions are made with the same all-natural and organic ingredients that the fast-growing company has always relied on for its products, including sustainable, antibiotic-free beef sourced from Niman Ranch and cage-free chicken from Petaluma Poultry.

Available in five flavors, the pocket-sized snack options include classic shredded beef blended with Monterey jack cheese, and two chicken and bean offerings—one with rice, and one without. For vegetarians, there’s a bean and sharp cheddar combination, while vegans will appreciate the bright blend of sauteed vegetables, rice and salsa in the Veggie Fajita burrito. Usual cooking time in a microwave takes less than a minute, with 160-190 calories per burrito.

Yielding even more healthy choices to stock your freezer with this winter, Evol (which is love spelled backwards) also launched a new series of burrito bowl entrees last month, specifically with gluten-free and low-sodium eaters in mind.

The mini burritos are available at most Whole Foods stores, while the burrito bowls can be found at grocery stores nationwide.
