Office phones are probably the drabbest ones designed in the industry. So the Callmate (specializes in conference calling) comes as a breath of fresh air with its cool smartphone-esque physique and transparent touchscreen applications. Taking advantage of LCD batteries, Bluetooth and the ergonomics of a curved body, this office phone is sleek and sexy! What do you think?

Btw, the Callmate works with Smartphones, Tablets and Laptops as well.

If a Laptop and Desktop Made Love

U.DTR stands for Ultra Desktop Replacement, and that’s exactly what it aims to do… remove the shortcomings of both laptops and desktops to form one ultra-versatile replacement device. The most obvious improvement is the “necked” touch-screen that elevates the monitor to a more comfortable height, similar to that of a desktop computer. Did we mention it’s touch-screen?! Other extras include an angled, more ergonomic keyboard, thoughtfully placed ports, and reduced battery weight.

Another drastic re-design of the U.DTR is detachment of the main battery. Because of their large power consumption and longer working periods, desktop replacements are almost always used on a desk, hooked up to the power grid. In this scenario, the huge internal battery sometimes accounting for as much as 50% of the total weight. For this reason, U.DTR is designed with a smaller, built-in backup battery while an external battery provides extended power.

  • Flexible display is wound around the two rollers on each end.
  • When the extension unlock button is pressed, the lock will be released and the tablet can be extended horizontally.
  • Apollon is a hybrid PC and can be used as conventional tablet, wider version tablet, and also a PC when it’s docked.

Solar Powered Laptop

We see solar paneled backpacks enjoying much success, so if we push the boundaries of innovative thinking then is the solar powered laptop too much to fathom? I suppose not, the Shadow Axis Solar Powered Laptop is a keen innovation, it hopes to get the lappie charged by including a solar panel on the back cover. I am not sure about the engineering aspect about this project, but it certainly is food for thought.

XO tablet by Yves Behar for One Laptop Per Child

The latest version of the affordable XO tablet, designed by Yves Behar for the One Laptop Per Child Association, goes on sale this week (+ movie).

The seven-inch touchscreen Android tablet will be available for $150 at Walmart stores across the USA this week, marking a move away from the product’s initial focus on the developing world.

The new version features a rubber exterior and a carrying hook, while the bilingual English/Spanish software comes with a suite of pre-loaded apps, games and books.

The XO tablet is the fourth iteration of the One Laptop Per Child concept, all of which have been designed by One Laptop Per Child’s chief designer, Yves Behar of San Francisco design studio fuseproject.

The first, nicknamed the “$100 laptop”, was a clamshell design with a keyboard that could be charged by hand-crank and was intended for children in remote villages without power.

The product was one of five winners of the Index Awards for sustainable design in 2007 and won the Design Museum’s inaugural Design of the Year award in 2008.

Its successor, the XOXO laptop, was unveiled in 2008 and featured two hinged touch-screens.

The third version, called the XO-3, was launched last year. This was a tablet with a removable rubber cover that could also house solar panels to recharge the battery.

“The new tablet is an evolution of all the things we have learned with the original XO Laptop,” says Yves Behar. “The new user interface is colourful and easy to use, while the protective rubber exterior features a carrying loop similar to the original XO finger hooks.”

FUSEPROJECT AND ONE LAPTOP PER CHILD ANNOUNCE NEW XO TABLET DESIGNED TO SPARK THE CHILD’S IMAGINATION

The fuseproject-designed XO Tablet arrives in Walmart stores across the country this week. Developed in collaboration with the One Laptop Per Child Association, the tablet harnesses the power of a touchscreen device to create new ways for children to learn. The powerful Android tablet has a new user interface and protective cover that delivers the continuity of the design language of the original One Laptop Per Child with a new learning experience.

Centered around the idea of aspirational “dreams”, the main screen is organized by topics rather than applications. A clear hierarchy of information makes tiers of learning within each dream easy to follow and access, a key element of the new child-centric XO Learning System Interface. A simple sentence “I want to be an…” is the opener to a myriad of software, games, and applications grouped around each of the subjects of interest.

“The new tablet is an evolution of all the things we have learned with the original XO Laptop,” says Yves Behar, fuseproject founder and Chief Designer of OLPC since 2006. “The new user interface is colorful and easy to use, while the protective rubber exterior features a carrying loop similar to the original XO finger hooks. What is unique about this version is how we crafted the user interface and the industrial design simultaneously. We wanted to make sure that together they would deliver a cohesive experience while stimulating discovery and offering a few surprises.”

The seven-inch tablet, made by Vivitar, is running Android OS, and is the only multilingual (English/Spanish) and Google-certified tablet for kids on the market. It includes content curated and selected for age-appropriateness by OLPC in collaboration with Common Sense Media, a leading non-profit organization dedicated to helping parents and teachers make informed decisions about media.

The pre-loaded software includes 100 free pre-loaded apps, games, and books. Special parental controls such as the XO Journal tool, allow parents to track how much time children spend on each app and can provide insight into where children’s interests lie.

The One Laptop Per Child Association has distributed 2.5 million of the original XO Laptop in 60 countries, and is now launching the new $150 tablet in the US starting at Walmart, as well as in developing countries such as Uruguay, Cambodia, and Barbados.

The Hybrid Laptop

This is the age of being multifunctional, hence a concept like the Paysage Laptop sound pretty acceptable. Here is a 14.1-inch laptop that features an inductive stand for the home. It looks super sexy in its brushed aluminum unibody design. A soft rubber hinge reinforced with a piece of metal inside gives it a maximum opening of 180°.

Use Paysage as a laptop or switch to a home PC of 21 inches. In the laptop configuration, all is powered by battery. However as a desktop computer, the screen is powered by the induction of the stand and connected via Bluetooth. It even features removable keyboard and trackpad!

Laptop Or PC, You Decide

PANDORA is a flexible laptop PC for the next generation. Through its flexible display and proper application of various technologies, this laptop PC can be applied to a number of interfaces smoothly. A shade less thicker than typical tablets, the device boasts of thin flexible battery technologies as well. A good hybrid concept for gen-next I love the new form and approach towards the design.

Measuring only 9mm thick, it can be easily gripped and is convenient to carry. Materials used include fine porous grapheme materials, high polymer and silicon on the hinge part.

Mouse With A Clip!

Although tablets are the way to go, many folks still rely on their laptops for their meetings. Designer Frank Guo innocently muses at the thought of using a laptop mouse, which can be cumbersome. As a solution he’s drawn up on the Clip Mouse, which requires no carrying. Its unique ‘C’ shape and flexible material provide an easy way to affix the mouse to a laptop. Simply slide it on from the side and it attaches to the laptop securely.

Clip Mouse is a 2012 LiteonAward Entry.

Flat Pack Mouse

I know the tech companies are doing their best to come out with a mouse that is sleek and compact enough to compliment a laptop. However I am sure most of you will agree with me that a full bodied mouse is what our hands crave, when we work one with a laptop. So to address the issue or portability and keep with the demand of a fully functional mouse, we have here the Flat CD Mouse Concept. When its flat-packed it fits into the CD ROM drive and when you fold it (origami style), it converts into a fully functional mouse. Love it and want it NOW!

The Flat CD Mouse is a 2012 iF Design Talents entry.
