Christmas week on Bloesem

Piajane

Good-morning, after a super fun day yesterday where we were celebrated the Dutch tradition Sinterklaas it is time to start focusing on the Christmas decoration in our house. It's not easy to feel the real spirit when living in a tropical land…but images like these from Pia do help 🙂 …I can't believe Amsterdam looked liked this last weekend… almost like a fairy-tale.

This whole week Christmas will be on my mind and I'm inviting you to send me images of Christmas decoration in your home…the ones we like best will be shown here on Bloesem throughout the coming weeks! Don't be shy …we love to see your decorations and ideas!

Tanjasoeter

The wonderful 2D Wall Christmas tree above is from Tanja Soeter, she made it from braided metal wire on a steel frame and is excellent for smaller spaces. I love the idea of hanging it above the dining table, put special messages in it and play with during Christmas diner!

Rue Magazine

Ruemagazin

Yes the world is changing or is it just that I'm getting older?…although I'm spending a lot of my time in the online world too and perhaps know a bit more than many others my age about internet, social networks etc. and yes I do have an ipad and iphone and yes I tweet…but let me be honest I am really having a hard time keeping up with all these wonderful new developments that are constantly going on online…for instance this online magazine/glossy….will there really be no need anymore in the future to go to a kiosk and buy a lot of paper but just scroll on your ipad in gorgeous magazines like Rue Magazine

Ruemag

Co-Founder and editor in chief Chrystal from plushpalate has done an amazing job in creating already issue 2 of this very glamourous and lady-like magazine…of course she had Help: Anne Sage, Bri Emery and Cassandra Lavalle among others were the creative brains, I'm deeply impressed!…this probably is going to be 'the' trend-setting and leading online magazine and the magazine is endless…keeps on going, 296 pages!! My absolute favorite part was the Jingle Girl Rock Christmas party (page 138)…loved the styling, idea and these Girls with the glasses…enjoy! {Images by Feather Love Photography}

Alice‘s DIY handmade origami Christmas decorations …

AliceOrigami wreaths are very easy to make and involve nothing more than some scissors and scraps of paper. I re-used some magazines, catalogues, old maps, and old wrapping paper. A nice little task to do when watching all those Christmas movies!

I got my instructions from the excellent step by step tutorial here :: There are also a lot more designs; I found a useful page here:

Alice_origami

To summarise this is the method that I used:

1. Cut out eight rectangular pieces of paper that are half as wide as
they are long. So in this instance I used paper 4cm by 8cm.

2. Fold each piece once in half along the length.

3. With the folded edges uppermost fold the top left and right corners down at right angles.

4. Then fold the piece in half across the width so that the flaps of the folded corners are inside.

5. Now you are left with a square end and a pointed end. The top of the
square end has two pockets. Take each piece and poke the pointed ends
into the pockets of another.

When you have linked all eight together you will have your wreath.

Tara Hogan‘s creative Christmas ideas

Lasercut-pear-ornament

*Trees

We usually do not get a tree anymore so I have been buying eucalyptus and decorating it. If you purchase a large quantity you can really create a dramatic tree and hang ornaments and lights from it. A large clear glass or milk glass vase with pebbles in the bottom works nice. I love the shape of the leaves and who says you need to get a traditional tree. I would feel better decorating a pine tree outside with white lights. I have become closer to trees and I like the idea of leaving them in the ground as much as possible.

Grandmas-TIN-vintage-orname

*Tin Vintage Ornaments

I  have all of my grandmother’s vintage tin ornaments. I love placing them in decorative milk glass cake pedestals or wooden bowls. If you can get your hands on vintage holiday ornaments you can do a lot with them. They can be hung in front of windows at all different levels for contrast and it creates a stunning look in any home.

Handmade-card

*Handmade Cards

I  love making things by hand and made this holiday card out of a 3" x 7" red vintage tag. You can find these tags on eBay or at antique stores. They already have a hole at the top if you want to use as an ornament or gift tag. I stitched this tag with with white thread to create garland.

I have a lot of paper materials to work from in a large box. I save all my Anthropologie catalogs as they make for great pieces in a collage. Old books, wallpaper scraps, scraps from a hole puncher, you name it, I have it here.

Paper-chain-hanging *Paper Mobile or Garland

All of these paper scraps can make an interesting Holiday mobile or paper chain as well. I used some small metal red bells and misc paper scraps left over from my collages. You could add you popcorn to this too and have a really fun chain link full of recycled materials. It looks romantic, vintage, and fun.

Lasercut-wall-hangings-deco

*Laser cut Ornaments or Wallhangings or Trivets

This year I began to make laser cut wooden ornaments out of scrap wood. The laser cut pears are a new addition for INK+WIT. All you need is bakers twine and you have a lovely ornament. Even past the holidays.

I experimented in making these larger and  love how they sit in the window. Right now they are unfinished but I may paint them. If you research laser cutters in your aree or online you can easily send them your designs to make ornaments or wall hangings. They also work as trivets on the dining room table

Posttitle_HolidayGuestJennifer Causey‘s handmade decoration tip …

Jencausey1

It is easy to create a beautiful garland with simple objects from nature. These sunprints are easy to make. Sunprint kits are available to purchase from  The Curiosity Shoppe. To make a sunprint, simply take a sheet of the special coated paper and place it on a sunny windowsill. Place an object on top of the sheet to create an image. You can choose leaves, twigs, ornaments, or anything you like. It is fun to experiment and see what you get. You just leave them in the sun for about 10 minutes, until the blue paper turns white….

Jencausey

…then, run them under cold water and let them dry. You will end up with a beautiful white image on a blue background. You can hang them in a windowsill, door way, or on a wall. If the paper curls, just iron it for a few seconds. They are really easy and a fun idea to do make with kids.

Studio Violet‘s Chlotespeg church

Studioviolet

Split ordinary wood clothespegs. Glue them to a formation/building (church or what you like). Use thin wood boards to make a roof, glue. Paint all of it, or not. Saw a hole for a door, and if you want, make a cord holder for a lamp (40 watt) and light it up.

Add what ever you want to decorate and build a whole world around it. Here we´ve used a cone, candy balls on thin steel wire, recyled paper to cut out a bird, roof plates and stones. Voila, ready to play!Studioviolet_dark

… just a little bit more about Studio Violet … Camilla Engman and Elisabeth Dunker are two, I think, famous artists/designers/stylists/creators who recently opened a studio together in Göteborg, Sweden. Not only are they working on their own separate projects, but they also combined forces and launched their first gorgeous product-line together … here are some images of the journals, cards and posters, all available in their online shop!

To celebrate the first day of December I would like to start with something special …. I have invited some fantastic artists, bloggers and friends to send Bloesem some tips and images of how to create some nice Christmas decoration and we call it          :: The Bloesem Holiday Season Decoration Month ::

Nina’s Creative Christmas Cookies

Nina

I’ve been a huge lover of ceramics, (vintage) crockery and tableware for quite some time now, both as a maker and a collector. But lately I’ve also started to become more interested in serving something special on those plates and trays and in those mugs, cups and bowls. Two people mainly inspired me in my growing interest for creative, fun and colorful food design and display: first of all Cesca Bondy, who’s a real breakfast artist serving and photographing breakfasts each morning that look like true works of art.

Ninavangoor

Second inspiration is Lisa Goudzwaard, who owns a creative catering company and who creates very fun and special ‘eadible art’. I once did a workshop with her and learnt the little trick that I’m using today in this little ‘Christmas project’: making colorful, creative cookies!

Ninainvorm

I have to say I’m not a traditional Christmas person, who likes all Santa decorations in red and green. Also, I don’t feel very related to Christmas as a Holiday. I do however like the December holidays to take time to bake and cook a lot, and experiment with new and creative recipes. The cookies that I made here are very simple sand cookies, but by adding food dyes in different colors and by using your own imagination, you can get very nice results.

Ninainvorm.nl

I like to serve my creative cookies as a part of a high tea/coffee, on my favorite vintage and hand-decorated plates. They taste a tiny bit funny (though good enough!), but how cheerful they look! And I think both children and grown-ups have a great time making these… 😉
