College Candy Presents 8 Under $20: Old Navy!

imageFor many of you, school has already begun or will shortly, which means new additions to the wardrobe are necessary. Woohoo! But you don’t have to spend a lot to update that 2008 fall wardrobe. Old Navy is a great place to get cute basics at super reasonable prices. Just pair these items (many of which are on sale!) with the trendier items/accessories in your closet for a brand new look. Here are a few pieces I found that’ll be great for the upcoming months:

Jeans: Jeans are obviously a wardrobe staple in every college girl’s closet, but sometimes we need a little variety. I say that every gal needs a cute pair of khakis. You can wear them with a polo, a basic button down or a tee. I totally love the green of these ones. They’re a little different, but still totally neutral so you can wear them with just about anything!

Cute Tops: I’m really digging the cut and print of this shirt (though they also have it in solid colors if print’s not your thang). But what I really heart about this tank is that you can wear it on its own before it gets too cool and also rock it under a boyfriend blazer for those chillier days.

Camilla Belle Wears Alexander McQueen Spring 2010

imageAt the debut of the futuristic dystopian flick “2012,” Camilla Belle bravely donned an Alexander McQueen creation from his Spring 2010 collection, which premiered in Paris a few weeks ago. The entire Alexander McQueen collection featured a futuristic look and reptilian themed prints. Belle’s dress was a short dress with a puff-ball skirt and gem trim on the sleeves. She wisely accessorized this attention-grabber of a dress with a minimal theme in mind. A simple bangle, plain earrings, and nude platform heels ensured that accessories would not compete with the dress. It would be easy to overdo it with chains or diamonds or “look-at-me” shoes. Also in attendance at the movie premiere was American Idol season 8 runner-up Adam Lambert. The soundtrack to the movie features his song “Time for Miracles.” Critics describe the song as “perfect” for the movie in which the world faces a huge cataclysmic event and those left have to fight for survival. Written by Roland Emmerich and Harald Kloser, the movie’s cast includes John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Thandie Newton. Woody Harrelson and Danny Glover are also included in the cast of thousands. The film premiered November 4 in Los Angeles. This week it is scheduled for release in Belgium, France, and the UK. Keep Your Kitchen Looking Cute!

imageMama always said the best way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. Knowing how to prepare a good meal can be pretty sexy — not to mention fun, and more importantly, tasty! When something like food is always on the brain, there’s nothing better than someone who can cure your fix with the steady use of a few tools. Cooking isn’t always simple: there’s a lot of prep and a lot of heart to it. Dressing it all up can make it a bit easier. Style you can wear can be just as important as style you can use, as both can be as expressive as Grandma’s fresh-baked apple pie. Even the best recipe for success will suffer if you don’t have the stuff to keep your kitchen stocked and happy. If you’ve got a knack for crafting with stoves, pots and knives, or like me, like to pretend you do, check out these cute picks for showing people just how cute you can be in your kitchen!

Essence Takes A Look At 30 Days Of Rihanna’s Style

A strong girl like Ri-Ri isn’t one to let a scandal get her down for long, and her eclectic and edgy style hasn’t suffered any despite her tiny break from the spotlight. From LA to NYC and beyond, she’s partied it up with pals in metallic leggings, relaxed spa-style in flowing printed dresses, rooted for the Lakers courtside in funky sneaker heels, and embraced her inner rocker-chick with moto jackets and a buzzed hairstyle. LemonDrop Suggests You “Trick Or Chic” With Fashion-Inspired Costume Ideas!

imageCraving a Halloween costume that’s not so much scary as it is stylish? Why not pay homage to an iconic fashion personality? From a ghoulish Karl Lagerfeld to a monstrous cat-wielding Kenley Collins, these get-ups are just right for fashionistas who are less into “boo” and more into “Goo … cci.” How about Anna Wintour? Between her pow-wow with David Letterman and the success of “The September Issue,” it may just be the Year of the Icy British Editrix. Here’s what you’ll need:

-elegant dress or skirt suit
-bobbed wig with bangs
-fabulous heels
-devil’s accessories
-sunglasses
-copy of Vogue
-haughty attitude

You may not be able to snap your fingers and have a designer frock suddenly appear, but you can fake it. Simply throw on your finest skirt suit or dress (bearing in mind that Ms. Wintour does not do black), affix an inverted triangle Prada label you’ve cleverly made out of construction paper, stick some devil’s horns atop your bobbed wig, and slap on some giant black shades. Extra points for carrying a copy of Vogue or having your giant Andre Leon Talley lookalike BFF hover behind you in a cape. Click over to Lemondrop for three more clever ideas!

Ginnifer Goodwin Wears A Dress Made Of Hospital Scrubs

imageIf you ever get a chance to walk around the streets of San Francisco, aside from endless views of the fog and rolling hills you’ll notice numerous buildings that make up the Academy of Art University. Since the Stylehive office is neighbors with an Academy of Art building, I’ve seen some super snappy dressers milling about the neighborhood. Based on their long history at New York Fashion Week, I know that their students will make it in the art and fashion worlds. And it already looks like a few students got a head start! Priscilla Guimarais, Kumiko Haruyama, Nui Tanapornwattana, Audrey Wang and Tramaine Tillman created a collection of sustainable dresses for a class project. “Big Love” and “He’s Just Not That Into You” actress Ginnifer Goodwin wore one such piece from the collection at 20th Anniversary Environmental Media Association Awards in Los Angeles. Made of hospital scrubs, the fabric was treated, dyed and pleated in a fabulous strapless dress. The future is bright and totally green for the lucky students and I can’t wait to see more! Label Love: Shakuhachi Keeps It Luxe Yet Laid-back

imageFashionistas hailing from the land down under may have long-since been fans of label Shakuhachi, founded by Aussie native Jessie White, but seeing how far the collection has come from its humble t-shirt line roots, it’s no wonder that that it’s gaining increasing popularity among stateside style mavens. While the latest looks include nearly everything but the kitchen sink — mesh minis, metallic shoulder-padded dresses, and floaty off-the-shoulder frocks — the collection still somehow manages to give a cohesive shout-out to its laid-back beachy origins. With an emphasis on loose fits balanced by feminine details like lace, sequins, and florals, the Spring/Summer 2010 collection seems to pay homage to the modern pin-up girl with cutout details, retro stripes, and cropped tees… not to mention a little boho flair and Asian inspiration thrown into the mix too. With such a variety of designs and details to choose from, both flirty and funky, Shakuhachi covers all its bases with looks you can take to the beach and on the town. Check the slideshow for some of my favorite pieces from their latest collection!
