Amsterdam International Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010: Ilja Visser

imageWhile designer Ilja Visser juggles three different labels at once, she manages to convey one overall cohesive message that spans across all three innovative lines: easy sophistication. For this year’s Amsterdam International Fashion Week for Spring/Summer 2010, she focused on presenting this theme while showing off all three unique labels. The three collections — “Ilja” (couture), “Ready To Fish” (business line), and “Valizz” (affordable fashion) — each had a clear target audience, yet all managed to have that relaxed, fluid silhouette and a soft color palette. Valizz looked very wearable and appropriately commercial with soft pastels, fluid fabrics and classic basics like simple jackets, jeans and wide trousers. Ready-to-wear< consisted of dresses, jackets and skirts in softer colors and faded prints. Couture by Ilja boasted a variety of extreme volume in dresses but also through some chic pieces in a summery tweed. Love what you see? Good news: next year she will open her first boutique in Amsterdam! Check out the slideshow for some of the runway highlights!

Spaced Out: 10 Finds Inspired By The Moon, Stars, And Beyond

imageThere’s water on the moon! Or, well… there’s molecular evidence of its presence. Which doesn’t sound nearly as exciting as “water on the moon,” but still somehow caused me to launch (ha) into a frenzied search for things trendy, wearable, and above all, covered in rockets. And stars. And planets! Interestingly enough, there were plenty of pieces to suit my craving. Tsumori Chisato’s bespeckled tights in cream are so whimsical with their teensy rockets and astronauts, I want to gaze at them all night (instead of staring out of my window). Leifsdottir’s silk sky print skirt is adorned with planets and a single ruffle, and would be so perfect with tights and a wool jacket. And the ‘Stellae’ necklace from Anthropologie satisfies my need for both a statement piece and something out of this world. Not so sure about wearing a galactic getup? Swipe some of Too Faced’s Galaxy Glam eyeshadow (Super Nova is my favorite) on your eyelids and take your smoky eye routine from smudged to stellar. See more space-inspired picks in my slideshow!

Style Flashback: Lisa Turtle From ‘Saved by the Bell’

imageJessie Spano was the brains and Kelly Kapowski was the beauty, but it was Lisa Turtle who had all the style. Saved by the Bell‘s resident style expert and gossip queen was sassy with sophisticated taste — heck, she was even accepted into the Fashion Institute of Technology on the show’s finale. But could we pull off her over-the-top look? To the rescue with some tips on making it work: our in-house fashion expert Brian. Brian says Lisa’s wild style is back in a big way with graphic fit-and-flare dresses and light-wash denim jackets. Turn down the volume on her high-intensity style by sticking to tamer prints with fewer colors. Check out more of Lisa Turtle’s style by clicking over to our friends at Lemondrop!

Cold Weather, Short Shorts?

imageYes, it may seem rather silly to wear shorts in winter, yet it’s so brilliant! I think it’s especially funny since I don’t particularly like wearing shorts in summer, yet there is something about layering the shorts over tights and wearing them with boots that make the seem more modest and less beach-bound teenybopper. But to do this trend right, you can’t just simply throw on your lightweight summer shorts over tights and expect it to work. Choose a winter weight fabric that’s appropriate for the season like wool or tweed for day or silk, leather or sequins for night. The one pair of shorts that can make the cross over? denim cut offs. They have a great rock and roll Erin Wasson feel when layered with legwear and cozy sweaters. Once you have your shorts picked out pick out a base layer like opaque tights, or get try some of this season’s patterned or embellished tights for a little something extra. On top, the more layering the better, and definitely play with proportions. A micro mini short looks great with a looser sweater or top while a more fitted knee length trouser short needs something a little more fitted like a sharp little jacket or coat (extra style points for a blazer with strong shoulders). Check out the slideshow to see some of our top picks that will show off your legs even when temperatures drop.

The Crop Top: Love it or Lose it?

imageIn the fashion world, it’s “what is old is new again” all of the time. Everywhere I turn, it seems like the cropped top is one of those “new” old trends that’s coming back with a vengeance! They were on the runways (Alexander Wang & Victoria Bartlett, for instance), in tons of editorials, and now it seems like the lynch pin of ’90s fashion is even popping into stores! After years of t-shirts and tops getting longer and longer, are we ready to raise the shirt hemline, bare the midriff again, and show off some skin? While the trend seems sexily adorable on tall Eastern European models in the pages of Vogue, is it going to be able to translate to mere mortals? Crop tops can be a great option with high-waisted pants and skirts, as you don’t have to tuck in all that excess fabric. But what happens with tighter pants? What’s going to hide a woman’s worst enemy… the muffin top? Just the thought of wandering the city streets with my belly bare makes me want to lock myself in my apt with my ab roller!

Sophisticated Playwear: Short Romper Jumpsuits!

imageThe short romper jumpsuit has grown up and is no longer just for playdates at the playground! Now available in sophisticated styles and sizes for grown ups, the summer romper is one way to keep cool and maintain your style credibility. Honed in fabrics like silk, knit and linen these delicate little short jumpsuits look very pretty dressed up with a pair of ankle tie wedge espadrilles. We spotted a few short romper jumpsuits and are coveting them as our go-to summer uniform. Haven’s ‘Amy’ silk print romper embraces a subtle ethnic tonal print with a blouse effect and tie waist. Pair it with an eye-catching pair of beaded wedge espadrilles. Emblazoned with the signature zigzag pattern, the Missoni Fortaleza woven jumpsuit indulges our search for “La Dolce Vita” with a spaghetti strap tank and flowing shorts. The Missoni jumpsuit is perfect for a bikini cover up or night on the town. Twin the Missoni jumpsuit is a pair of Louboutin light blue ankle tie espadrilles. Elizabeth and James’ black silk summer romper will be the urban girl’s best friend- it’s a decidedly daring jumper for the perfect downtown look. Don a pair of black caged sandals or beach-ify the look with a pair of black ankle tie espadrilles. Alexander Wang’s edgy zipper-embellished silk short romper is made even cooler with a graphic marble print. Pair the oversized short jumpsuit with a pair of pretty lavender hued Louboutin espadrilles. For more sophisticated summer rompers, click over to our friends at The Find!

Don’t You Dare Call These Tees Basic!

imageWe love our basics, we really do… but we’d be lying if we said they were the most exciting things in our closets. Sure, that American Apparel v-neck goes with 18 other outfits (and that’s just the grey one) but honestly, it’s kind of boring on its own, right? Why not swap out those boring basics with tees that have just a little something extra? Tiny embellishments transform plain tees from reliable standbys to fashionable favorites in their own right, and they’re just as versatile as ever. Take this jersey tank from Casual Couture by Green Envelope- from the front, it’s a simple, well-cut top, but the back features an exposed zipper that will add a little edge to any outfit. The pearl tee from Sauce is a girly spin on everyone’s favorite slouchy pocket tee, and J. Crew’s jeweled tissue tee practically has a statement necklace built in and would look perfect paired with everything from scruffy boyfriend jeans to a polished skirt and blazer. See the slideshow for your new favorite basics!

Go Wild With A Faux Fur Vest This Fall!

imageMy favorite boho-chic models and celebs like Kate Moss, Sienna Miller and of course Rachel Zoe have all been seen throughout the years wearing fur vests. A fur vest is a fun trendy piece to keep around to add a little punch to an otherwise boring jeans and t-shirt outfit. I’m always tempted to buy one for myself, but I’m skeptical about the vest making me look chic rather than like a bulky Eskimo. It also doesn’t help that I don’t agree with buying fur when plenty of faux fur options are available. So I got to searching for animal and cruelty-free fur vests that look like the real deal and found tons at every price point. Trust Urban Outfitters to have a super shaggy fur vest for only $88. If you’re looking to splurge, go for the Gryphon Rocker Vest with eye-catching metallic beading at the neckline. For more faux fur vests, check out my slideshow!
