Tablet to the Rescue

Designed for firefighting teams, the Command Goal tablet-system aims to ease the management of emergency fire situations on-the-spot. An incredible improvement from ineffective white-board techniques, the device displays an accurate, constantly updated representation of the fire zone to aid in resource management and inter-departmental information sharing. A comprehensive visual map and improved communication means enhanced safety and fewer lives lost.

The Guiding Light

Only if the Titanic had been adequately equipped with rescue gear, many more people would have survived the sinking. The thing with disasters is that they are unpredictable and the only way to outsmart it is to be prepared. Life Guide is one such rescue equipment that takes advantage of technology to ensure safe rescues on a capsizing boat or ship.

Designed as a quarter-circle shaped device, it hooks onto three others, to complete a full circle. It can be used as an alternate light source and in the event of an emergency red LED light start flashing. Essentially the device can be used as a flashlight, exit guide and flotation gear. RFID signals connect each device to the nearest emergency exit. I like the scope of this gear and hopefully it inspires something as comprehensive as this.

Fire Away!

I’m a little embarrassed to admit I have no idea how to use a common fire extinguisher… but I know I’m not the only one! While I’m sure it’s somewhat basic, compared to the SafeHome extinguisher, it’s way more complicated. Just pull the pin to release the trigger, point in the direction of the fire, and let ‘er rip!

Easy and light enough for kids to use, this compact extinguisher was designed for mounting in areas of the home that are most vulnerable to fire. With one quick grab, it slips out of the holder with your hand already in position to use!

What an extinguisher should be…

We generally imagine fire extinguishers as large, bulky, single-use items kept behind safety glass. Though they’re built for emergency situations, they’re ironically not something you’re able to keep very handy. This design by Philip Andersson, however, solves the portability problem with a compact unit that can be held in one hand. Durable, lightweight, & easy to pack, it’s perfect for the car, camping, or keeping handy in the kitchen! Hopefully you don’t need it more than once… but if you do, it’s refillable!

Smart Stretcher

Lenify is a collapsible emergency stretcher that all but eliminates the chances of secondary injuries caused by lifting patients onto the stretcher. The solution: divide the stretcher into three parts to stabilize the upper body, arms/midsection, and lower body. This unique construction makes it possible to “scoop” the individual into the stretcher rather than the traditional “lift and drop” method.

Emergency Camping

The V Plus is an emergency relief tent ideal for folks stuck in disaster relief zones. The tent is equipped with features like the ability to create its own power via solar cells. Single tents can be interconnected to larger ones, thus accommodating more people together. The exterior of the tent is made up of advanced flexible solar cells that generate enough power to satisfy the tent’s energy demands.

  • Each tent can become an independent energy unit to effectively solve the energy issues in disaster areas.
  • The tent frame incorporates LEDs to provide lighting.
  • The lighting component is attached to the top of the support pole, and the unused solar energy is stored in battery cells within the pole.

V Plus Emergency Relief Tent is a 2012 red dot award: design concept winner.

Tinkerball to the Rescue

Inspired by the events of 9/11, designers Jiyoung Choi & Namsun Do created the Tinkerball as a life-saving device for a variety of emergency situations from fires to earthquakes. The equipment uses a controlled cable and handle mechanism to serve as a descending life-line for those trapped in high places and needing to escape. Easily installed in apartments or offices, it’s a great life-saving solution for an often overlooked hazard.

Skyway or the Highway

As maneuverable as they are, emergency helicopters still have limitations like relatively low speed and limited reach with their large rotors  that prevent them from landing close to objects. The Skyway concept concentrates on eliminating these setbacks by utilizing a unique multi-fan propulsion system that makes it smaller, faster, more stable, safer, and all-in-all better equipped to access emergency situations that even ground ambulances might have trouble getting to. You gotta check out the vid to see how this bad boy works!

The Hexicopter

Designed for disaster rescue and other squad-based missions, the Hatchet unmanned copter concept utilizes not one, not 2, not 3… but a 6 rotor design that gives it superior maneuverability and mid/low altitude stability beyond that of ordinary helicopters. Modular components can be interchanged for different missions so it’s capable of both surveying areas for preliminary reconnaissance and performing rescues or even fire extinguishments, making it a versatile tool for a variety of operations.

Other on-board equipment includes an infrared scanning imager, instant photography live-feed cameras, and an unmanned control system for operation from the ground.
