Last Minute Fire Escape

Intended as a last resort lifesaver, Xitus is a product that allows a building’s occupants to safely descend to ground level when extreme conditions are present. The product is deployed and positioned over a window ledge where the user can secure it with floor mounts before securing a safety line. After climbing over, a controlled descent device slows the person to the ground carefully so they can quickly unclip and allow the next person to descend to safety.

Must-have Fire Mask

One of the more common injuries during a fire isn’t a skin burn, but lung damage from breathing in dangerous smoke. The Fire Escape Mask helps users to escape fire situations safely by catching smoke before it enters the lungs. A liquid reservoir is activated when the user opens the quick-access package, permeating the mask to absorb smoke. It not only protects the lungs, but also gives victims more time to escape to safety.

The blanky for when things gets shaky!

Living in Los Angeles’s recently active earthquake alley, my neighbors and I are interested in products like the Second Skin blanket more now than ever! This emergency protection blanket was designed for immediate use after a devastating quake. Both a temporary shelter and a stretcher, it makes it easier for untrained volunteers to assist in rescue efforts. It’s also brightly colored so those in need are easy to spot amidst the rubble.

Due to the sudden nature of quakes, the responsibility for the initial immediate rescues tends to land on bystanders from the vicinity who emerge as volunteers. These instant rescuers have no prior training and limited (or no) equipment. The product can be used by someone with no experience in aiding others. It also lightens the workload of emergency service personnel in the initial stages after a quake, and can help survival rates.

The material properties of Second Skin allow it to perform multiple functions. Poron XRD high-impact foam, which is usually used in sporting equipment, gives Second Skin the unique ability to shield the user from small pieces of debris during aftershocks while also providing a level of comfort. With the addition of Autex acoustic panelling (designed to dampen acoustic noise in large open spaces), Second Skin remains lightweight but rigid, and able to support the internal structure as well as the built-in stretcher.

The Fireguard

As simple as it is, the classic fire extinguisher is intimidating and confusing to use. It’s also cumbersome and large, meaning most people won’t keep it handy (if they keep one at all). The Fireguard was created to combat these problems with a compact, easier to use, friendly design that’s right at home in the kitchen where most fires start. See how it works —>

Fireguard is activated with a motion much more natural than pulling a pin- instead, simply pull the lever and you’re ready to go. The inside is also assembled with two separate canisters, allowing them to be individually refilled or recycled, so nothing has to be thrown away anymore.

Delivery Drones are the Future

Amazon Prime made headlines recently with their vision for delivery drone system, but designer Stefan Riegebauer beat them to the punch almost a year ago! The Smart Aid doesn’t focus on shopping deliveries (yet), rather, it aims to provide preliminary medical aid to those in need before paramedics arrive. The unique tri-copter design is also capable of maneuvering to areas unreachable by medic teams. Check out the vid to see how it works!

Biomimicry Transporter Bot

The PAFORM like one of the giant Jaeger robots from Pacific Rim… only it’s for real emergencies and not alien invasions! Designed for the distant future, the machine serves to aid in natural disaster situations by autonomously delivering everything from food and supplies to medical equipment and even smaller emergency vehicles. The PAFORM’s transforming shape is inspired by the pangolin, curling up in a similar manner and rolling to cover treacherous terrain.

This Hammer Will Hurt ‘Em

The Hammer in Hand concept integrates a clever window-shattering hammer, which can be used in case of an emergency situation in a train or a bus. Coming from a state where such accidents occur on a regular basis, it will be reassuring to know that safety implements like this are easily deployable by commuters. With a few tweaks here and there, I’m sure we can build this idea into something bigger and efficient.

Right Direction

Exit Guide is an evacuation system linked to the building’s fire alarm system. When the alarms go off, the green and red lights on the evacuation door light up, indicating which direction (or floor) you need to move to. For example, if the lower part of the escape door is red and the upper part is green, it simply means you need to go to the floors above you and there is danger below. The aim is to reduce panic and avoid confusion, so the speed of evacuation can be maximized.

Exit Guide is a 2013 red dot award: design concept winner.

Shelter Awareness

The Life-Light is a unique directional system that includes inflatable balloons integrated on streetlights. During an emergency situation, the balloons inflate and guide people to the nearest shelter. It displays the most efficient route, thus speeding the navigation process.

  • Life-Light is automatically activated by the central service system when a disaster warning alert is activated.
  • The system inflates balloons around streetlight poles, which indicate evacuation information and allow people to take a precise and speedy route to a shelter.
  • It is installed on streetlights at intervals of fifty meters.
  • The light flashes on and off, and a sound alert is also incorporated.
  • The dual mode of communication allows the system to be understood by those with visual or hearing impairments.
  • The lack of complex language or lettering also allows foreigners to readily understand it.
  • The system’s battery is charged by the city’s electricity supply as well as by solar power, so even if the city’s power grid goes down, it can still function.
  • The system also uses smart technology; if a route is blocked by a collapsed building, for example, the system updates and leads people to the next closest shelter point.

Life-Light is a 2013 red dot award: design concept winner.

A Hiker Must-have

As humans, we’re naturally inclined to think “that could never happen to me,” especially when it comes to getting lost! Despite our egos, emergency situations do happen so having the right safety equipment is key. Designed specifically for hiking, the Sound of Light whistle provides novice and expert hikers with an additional level of visible and audible protection. The super bright LED and ear-shattering whistle serve as a beacon for rescuers while a built-in compass helps hikers navigate their way out of danger.
