Smart Heart Watch for Kids

It’s difficult for children suffering from congenital heart defects to fully understand the seriousness of their condition as well as how they can prevent the onset of serious symptoms. To heighten kid’s awareness and help educate them on ways to take control of the problem, the Koen smartwatch detects abnormal changes in heart rate and distracts the wearer by automatically presenting a game to slow their heart rate. Games include breathing and calming exercises so little ones can learn how to control their condition and get back to being kids!

A Cane That Helps Itself Stay Up Too

One major concern for cane users is where exactly they’ll be able to rest their can when not using it. Whether they’re sitting, laying down, in the kitchen or outside, it’s important that it always be handy. Thanks to its manual opening tripod attachment, the Tricane ensures that the walking aid is always within reach and won’t fall to the ground. In anodized aluminum, it’s just as lightweight, compact and good-looking as a classic cane.

Foldscope: The 50-Cent Origami Microscope

Foldscope.jpg

A bioengineer at Stanford has been busy at work creating an alternative to the expensive microscopes used to diagnose blood-borne sicknesses like Malaria. What Manu Prakash came up with isn’t just a microscope—it’s a mini tool made of laser-cut cardstock parts and a lens that’s destined for mass-produced design stardom. According to Stanford’s release on the invention, the origami-based microscope can be thrown off a building, stomped on and even submerged in water with no harm done to its functionality, making it perfect for use in harsh climates.

Cardstock, lens and adhesive included, this bookmark-size design comes in at around 50 cents and takes 20 minutes to put together. See what the designer has to say about the creation of Foldscope and its open-source potential:

Guided Commute For Visually Challenged

The ‘Station reported device’ is both a guide dog and Marvel’s ‘Dare Devil’ rolled into one wearable gadget. This concept is designed to assist visually challenged persons for a safe commute. It employs EVTSS technology to send electrical signals to a person’s brain to create 2 dimensional visuals of oncoming vehicles and possible obstacles. The multitalented device can also guide a person to the nearest bust stop, select a bus route, scan the buses with its inbuilt camera and alert the wearer when the right bus comes. It can also generate SOS signals by means of sounds and lights.

This project is a Dongguan Cup winner.

Must-have Fire Mask

One of the more common injuries during a fire isn’t a skin burn, but lung damage from breathing in dangerous smoke. The Fire Escape Mask helps users to escape fire situations safely by catching smoke before it enters the lungs. A liquid reservoir is activated when the user opens the quick-access package, permeating the mask to absorb smoke. It not only protects the lungs, but also gives victims more time to escape to safety.

The blanky for when things gets shaky!

Living in Los Angeles’s recently active earthquake alley, my neighbors and I are interested in products like the Second Skin blanket more now than ever! This emergency protection blanket was designed for immediate use after a devastating quake. Both a temporary shelter and a stretcher, it makes it easier for untrained volunteers to assist in rescue efforts. It’s also brightly colored so those in need are easy to spot amidst the rubble.

Due to the sudden nature of quakes, the responsibility for the initial immediate rescues tends to land on bystanders from the vicinity who emerge as volunteers. These instant rescuers have no prior training and limited (or no) equipment. The product can be used by someone with no experience in aiding others. It also lightens the workload of emergency service personnel in the initial stages after a quake, and can help survival rates.

The material properties of Second Skin allow it to perform multiple functions. Poron XRD high-impact foam, which is usually used in sporting equipment, gives Second Skin the unique ability to shield the user from small pieces of debris during aftershocks while also providing a level of comfort. With the addition of Autex acoustic panelling (designed to dampen acoustic noise in large open spaces), Second Skin remains lightweight but rigid, and able to support the internal structure as well as the built-in stretcher.

Touchy-feely Hearing Aid

Conventional hearing aids come with a lot of short comings. Loud noises making the wearer feel irritable, the awkwardness of wearing bigger sized hearing aids and many more. The CLOSE is an attempt at an alternative system to provide speech input to the hearing impaired by means of tactile sensations.

Fashioned like a stylish smart watch, CLOSE has been claimed to possess the capability to analyze and convert auditory signals into tactile sensations. It aims to achieve tactile communication by means of electrode arrays that simulates the feeling of touch on the wrist. The designers are confident that human brain could decipher these tactile inputs into speech patterns. CLOSE can also share information with a smartphone via Bluetooth linking.

The CLOSE concept would be a great invention if it could work perfectly as claimed by the designers. Because, not only can this be an alternative to hearing aids, but also help people with cochlear damage and zero hearing abilities.

PullClean: The Agency of Design’s Response to Keeping Hospital Visits Hygienic

PullClean-Hallway.jpg

You may remember The Agency of Design from our story on designing with energy, as told by the group’s co-founder Richard Gilbert. Just as the Agency’s design for a sustainably efficient lamp was focused on hard data—in lieu of the fluffy eco-friendly promises and features we too often see today— their recent project, PullClean, is largely based on research and observation. By investigating the daily movements of hospital employees, the Agency of Design came up with a door-handle-turned-sanitizer that makes it as convenient as possible for hospital employees to keep their hands clean by using one of the most used surfaces to do so.

PullClean.gif

As stated in their product video, hospital acquired infections kill around 100,000 people in the U.S. every year. As we know from Rachel Lehrer’s two-part case study on the topic, sanitizing in a hospital environment is a real problem for employees—and when they’re attending to already sick or injured patients, the germ-spreading quotient multiplies.

Gilbert explains in the video:

Level Heading Stretcher

Skiing, trekking, rock climbing and all the similar thrills that the mountains provide also come with the high risk of accidents. The rescue operations of such victims demand specialized equipments that can tackle the unique challenges posed by a mountainous terrain. The Seesaw stretcher is a smart yet simple solution that seems to have the agility to adopt to such demanding conditions.

The bed of the Seesaw stretcher is fixed on two pivots that allows it to swivel. This swivel action helps it to balance the victim’s body in horizontal level even while traversing steep inclinations. Activate a locking mechanism and the stretcher turns into a regular fixed type. I feel that the stretcher can play a role in not just mountain rescue operations but also urban fire rescue scenarios that involves stairs and tall buildings.

Often, the most genial solutions come dressed as simple designs. The Seesaw stretcher is a classic example for that, tilting scales in favor of safer rescue operations.

Comprehensive Solution for a Complex Condition

The wearable Dialog band was designed to give epileptic patients peace of mind in their everyday lives. Using a mix of new technologies like miniature biometric sensors & flexible circuit boards, the discreet patch can be worn on the body or attached to a wristband where it wirelessly pairs with the user’s smartphone to notify them when it’s time to take medication or even alert the onset of a seizure. Collected biometric & environmental data can then be shared easily with physicians for overall more productive management of the condition.
