Fire By Design

Our typical fire extinguishers are bare minimum in design. They serve only one purpose: fire dousing. There is a little more that can be added, particularly in the form of protection. The Shield Extinguisher attempts to do this by bridging the gap between fire fighting and protecting one from flames, smoke and possible blasts. Take a look how…

The Fireguard

As simple as it is, the classic fire extinguisher is intimidating and confusing to use. It’s also cumbersome and large, meaning most people won’t keep it handy (if they keep one at all). The Fireguard was created to combat these problems with a compact, easier to use, friendly design that’s right at home in the kitchen where most fires start. See how it works —>

Fireguard is activated with a motion much more natural than pulling a pin- instead, simply pull the lever and you’re ready to go. The inside is also assembled with two separate canisters, allowing them to be individually refilled or recycled, so nothing has to be thrown away anymore.

Fire Bombs

Love this clever design for a Fire Extinguisher! It has several water bombs – or balls if you’d like to call them that, which can be used instantly for small fires. It’s definitely a radical redesign that I’m seeing for the first time. Several tweaks to it and you can have a brand new take on how to put out fires!

Fire Away!

I’m a little embarrassed to admit I have no idea how to use a common fire extinguisher… but I know I’m not the only one! While I’m sure it’s somewhat basic, compared to the SafeHome extinguisher, it’s way more complicated. Just pull the pin to release the trigger, point in the direction of the fire, and let ‘er rip!

Easy and light enough for kids to use, this compact extinguisher was designed for mounting in areas of the home that are most vulnerable to fire. With one quick grab, it slips out of the holder with your hand already in position to use!

What an extinguisher should be…

We generally imagine fire extinguishers as large, bulky, single-use items kept behind safety glass. Though they’re built for emergency situations, they’re ironically not something you’re able to keep very handy. This design by Philip Andersson, however, solves the portability problem with a compact unit that can be held in one hand. Durable, lightweight, & easy to pack, it’s perfect for the car, camping, or keeping handy in the kitchen! Hopefully you don’t need it more than once… but if you do, it’s refillable!

The Intuitive Extinguisher

The Easy Trigger hopes to make your experience with a fire extinguisher less frightful and more intuitive. The thing is, different people have different ways to react during emergencies. Some are calm and collected and will follow instructions and pull out the pin correctly from the conventional extinguishers. Others may panic and fumble. In order to ensure smooth operations, the Easy Trigger was designed.

Intuitive and easy to use, this project is a 2012 iF Design Talents entry.
