New York 2013: designers Young & Battaglia debuted a glass pendant lamp with a tiny chandelier inside for design brand Mineheart at ICCF last month.
A miniature brass chandelier sits within a hand-blown glass shade that is shaped like a light bulb but with an open bottom. Minute candles set on two tiers each give off a small glow.
Designed with chrome fittings, the lamp hangs from the ceiling on a two-metre-long braided cable. A longer cable can be supplied on request. The King Edison lamp is named after Thomas Edison, the inventor of the lightbulb, and references regal chandeliers.
Young & Battaglia have also designed wallpaper to turn any room into an Italian palazzo for Mineheart. Dezeen’s most recent stories about lamps include a chalice-shaped set with concrete bases and terracotta table lights with conical shades.
Other products launched in New York included a tap by Philippe Starck that uses half the water of a regular faucet and an elongated chair with a faceted back. Plump pastel silicone garments moulded from knitwear feature in this collection by Royal College of Art graduate Xiao Li.
The marshmallow-coloured range features silhouettes exaggerated with puffed-up skirts and sleeves that billow from midway down the upper arm.
“Traditional knitwear is more soft and shapeless,” Li told Dezeen. “I wanted to find out a new way to present knitwear and was influenced by Modern architecture and 60s Balenciaga.”
The voluminous pieces are made from spacer fabric, which combines two layers of textiles connected by filaments and holds its shape while still appearing lightweight.
Li used her own knitting samples to create moulds to produced patterned silicone material used entirely for a jacket and skirt, and as hems or accessories for genuine knitted items. “I wanted to make sure my collection is innovative but still wearable,” she said.
She swapped the fluorescent colours of her earlier work for more muted shades, affiliating lilac, peach, mint green and pale yellow.
“All the materials came in white and I dyed them by myself to match the colour,” said Li.
Her collection was shown at the Royal College of Art fashion show last week, where Maiko Takeda presented headdresses covered in hundreds of colourful bristles.
At the Westminster graduate fashion show Philli Wood revealed giant cable knit patterns printed onto oversized outerwear.

Dezeen Watch Store: in this interview we filmed with Petrus Palmer of Swedish studio Form Us With Love, the designer talks about the No.1 watch – which is once again available to pre-order at Dezeen Watch Store (+ movie).
Form Us With Love launched No.1 in October 2012 with Swedish watch brand TID Watches. We have eight of each colour available for pre-order now with the estimated delivery date of Friday 7 June.
The design studio looked to create a timeless watch that has the ability to withstand changes in style over time. This resulted in a timepiece which has a classic look designed for longevity. “We wanted to do something that could be outside trends,” says he. “The whole idea is that it’s timeless.”
The watch face has a concave shape and features hour and minute hands with smooth rounded tips. The thinner second hand has a circular ring on the end which counts the seconds using dotted markings on the watch face. “We’re really into typefaces, and we like the look and feel of having numbers,” Palmer says.
The watch features a black, ion-plated stainless steel case with either a black or white face and a woven nylon wristband. The watch has a large 40mm face and is best suited as a men’s watch. “We designed a watch we would wear,” says Palmer.
