Both of the watches have a unique time-keeping feature that was first seen in the Swiss Railway clocks that have kept time on the country’s train network since the 1950s.

Designed by Zurich-born engineer Hans Hilfiker, the Swiss Railway clock has a red second hand ticker that completes a full minute revolution in just 58 seconds.

When the second hand reaches the 12 o’clock mark, it pauses for two seconds. As it does so, the minute hand ticks forward, starting the second hand again.

This feature was designed to help trains leave exactly on schedule, as railway timetables in Switzerland are timed to full minutes. The same red second hand and movement is incorporated into the Stop2Go watches.

The design also features a unique crown. Instead of a circle, the Stop2Go has a switch that allows easy adjustment of the electronically controlled hands. When the crown is pulled out, the second hand moves to the 12 o’clock dial, and a twist to the left or right moves the minute hand incrementally.

The all black variant of the watch features a 41mm stainless steel case framed with matching steel braces. The black silicone strap has a clasp that can be adjusted for size by sliding the pins up and down pre-cut holes.

Watches by David Ericsson for VOID launch at Dezeen Watch Store

Watches from Hong Kong brand VOID launch at Dezeen Watch Store

Scandinavia-inspired watch brand VOID has introduced two new watches featuring automatic movements that never need winding (+ buy now from Dezeen Watch Store).

VOID V03M with black strap and brushed stainless steel case

Founded in 2008 by Hong Kong-based Swedish designer David Ericsson, VOID produces watches with a Scandianvian design aesthetic and aims to create “an almost architectural expression” with its timepieces.

These two automatic watches created by Ericsson pay homage to the simple designs of the 1950s and 60s.

The VOID V03M, available in silver and black or black and black, features an automatic movement that will run perpetually – as long as the user moves. Built by Japanese watch manufacturer Miyota, the movement uses kinetic energy to wind the main spring that keeps the watch ticking.

Aesthetically, the timepiece draws on the Ericsson’s Scandinavian roots by using simple geometries to reinterpret features common to diving watches, creating a streamlined dress watch.

Waterproof to a depth of 50 metres, it features oversized luminescent hour indexes and bright white hands that sit on top of a matte black face to help the wearer read the time even in murky conditions.

The face also features a calendar in place of the three ‘o’ clock mark and subtle branding below the six o clock index.

Measuring 36 millimetres across and 12 millimetres thick, the case is made from solid stainless steel. On the rear, a circular window reveals the automatic watch movement inside.

Dezeen Watch Store: Scout, the first watch by Swiss-based design studio Big-Game, is now available in five colours at Dezeen Watch Store.

Scout designed by Big-Game

Designed for everyday use, Scout features flat surfaces and geometric lines with a bold, easy-to-read face and contrasting numerals and markers.

“We researched heavily on military and functional timepieces throughout history,” Big-Game told Dezeen Watch Store. “Their use of high contrast dials, readable typefaces and simple case designs made them look functional and elegant at the same time.”

SCOUT designed by BIG-GAME

“We wanted to come up with our own updated version and call it Scout – a simple, robust, affordable timepiece – a tool for everyday life,” added the designer.

The watch, which features a durable nylon strap, also draws from surprising nostalgic inspiration. “In a more unexpected way we were always big fans of the Flik Flak kids watches that also have an aluminium case and a Nylon strap,” explained the designer.

Four styles are available, each with a distinctive Nato strap. Nato straps were originally developed for British military watches – the textured nylon weave was specially chosen for its strength, durability and flexibility. Each case is also available in two variations: rose gold or polished silver.

The two men’s watches included in the selection are the Classic Warwick and the Classic Oxford. The Classic Warwick has a blue and green striped strap, whilst the Oxford’s is red and navy. Both styles have a 40-millimeter case that’s 6mm thick and is designed to fit comfortably on the wearer’s wrist.

The women’s styles, the Classic Glasgow Lady and the Classic Swansea Lady, have a slightly smaller 36-millmeter case, but are still designed to fit in the same way. All the watches have interchangeable straps.

Filip Tysander founded the brand in 2011, following an encounter with a British gentleman named Daniel Wellington. His timeless style inspired Tysander to design and name a watch brand after him. This collection is directly inspired by Wellington, who used to wear his old Rolex threaded onto a Nato strap.

Augmented reality demonstration at Dezeen’s Imagine Shop for Selfridges

This movie we filmed at Dezeen’s pop-up shop of the future at London department store Selfridges demonstrates how augmented reality technology could transform retail.

Augmented reality demonstration at Dezeen's Imagine Shop at Selfridges

Dezeen editor-in-chief Marcus Fairs introduces the shop we curated for Selfridges‘ Festival of Imagination, which includes a virtual retail experience for Dezeen Watch Store and a life-size walkaround digital model of Zaha Hadid’s superyacht – both created by technology company Inition.

“The Imagine Shop is an attempt to visualise the kind of products, services and shops we might have in the future,” says Fairs.

Imagine Shop at Selfridges

The space on the ground floor of the department store contains all wall of 3D-printed products and clothing by Janne Kyttanen of 3D Systems, and even features a giant printed ping-pong table.

“The most exciting thing here is that we’ve worked with Inition, which is a 3D visualisation company, to show how augmented reality could be used in stores of the future,” Fairs says.

Inition lead creative Alex Lambert

Inition lead creative Alex Lambert then talks about the augmented-reality projects that his company and Dezeen worked on for this event.

“Inition and Dezeen collaborated on two pieces of augmented reality,” he says, “one for watches available at the Dezeen Watch Store and another for a £300 million superyacht designed by Zaha Hadid.”

Lambert talks through the technology for the yacht models, which works using a tablet camera that picks up the code from patterned markers then displays the 3D model on screen.

“This type of augmented reality relies on a tablet,” he explains. “You’ll see a live video feed coming through the camera and once you point it at the marker the 3D model will appear.”

Two versions of the yacht are included in the shop: a miniature version and a full-size model that glides across the tablet screen.

“We’ve actually created the yacht in full scale,” says Lambert. “It’s a sunny blue ocean with a full-scale yacht sailing past, just to give people an idea of the scale of the superyacht.”

Using the same technology, shoppers can try on designs from Dezeen Watch Store at a virtual watch shop. Shoppers simply attach a band around their wrist and hold it up to a camera, then the chosen watch manifests over the band.

“We take one of these bespoke trackers… turn to the camera, get the marker in view and boom! The watch appears,” Lambert describes.

Inition added texture and shadows to the virtual watches to make them look as realistic as possible. Different models and colourways appear instantaneously around the wrist on screen as they are selected.

“Dezeen are very forward thinking in employing this technology, especially for watches,” says Lambert. “In the future hopefully people will download the app, use a webcam or tablet and try on the watches at home before they purchase online.”

Elsewhere in the department store, Inition also worked with fashion designer Gareth Pugh to install a virtual reality booth on the first floor and an auditorium designed by Dutch architects OMA has been created in the basement.

The Festival of Imagination continues all this month at Selfridges on Oxford Street, central London.
