Ground Breaking Backhoe

Aaron Montford’s modern backhoe redesign features a more stable platform with an adjustable profile as well as higher arm reach and better maneuverability with four wheel steering capability. The most significant update is a side mounted retractable telescopic shovel arm that allows for increased range of motion and more stable digging without moving the entire machine. Newer technologies include a ground penetrating sonar system built directly into the shovel to prevent underground pipe and cable damage.

Amazing Excavating

This backhoe design features modern ergonomic and safety enhancements but retains the iconic yellow and black, heavy-duty aesthetic of classic construction vehicles. The primary feature is a two-part, articulated arm that collapses snugly against the side of the machine, making it easier to transport and safer to move when the boom is not in use. The electric digger is powered by 4 independent, in-wheel motors that give the operator more control.

Other advancements include a redesigned front loader and bucket with a unique placement within the hood that doesn’t obstruct visibility and a 3D camera system for an enhanced and more controlled perspective similar to augmented reality.

Tools for Dummies

I’m the worst when it comes to losing the tools in my toolbox – I can never find what I need, which is exactly why I’m loving the latest design from Bolt Group. The ReadyTools series keeps all the components in the handle of the tool and a nifty pull-out tray keeps them organized and tucked safely away until the next time you need them. In regular wrench and socket wrench versions, they’re also a great way to save space or take on the move.

Cool Hunting Video Presents: The Maze

A behind-the-scenes look at LA’s hidden haunted house

While recently exploring the southern coast of the Golden State we ended up in the Los Angeles neighborhood of El Sereno where artist Albert Reyes gave us a behind-the-scenes look at his yearly Halloween project. Since 2004 Reyes has built a Halloween maze in his backyard for a party in celebration of America’s favorite pagan holiday. Over time, the maze has evolved from a blanket tunnel held together with sticks to a full, free-standing structure, guaranteed to spook the drunk, stoned and sober alike. We got a special glimpse of the maze in daylight to learn about the scavenged materials and secret passages, and follow the process behind this bizarre installation.

Throughout the rest of the year, Albert creates pop-culture and political-satire prints on paper, which are available online from Mastodon Mesa

World of Bugs

Laser Peg’s newest toy lets you construct your favorite creepy crawly from LED lights
laserpegs1.jpg

Adding a “World of Bugs” to their repertoire of lighted construction sets, Laser Pegs continues to entice children with their LED-powered educational toys. With one peg grounded to a power source (either batteries or an AC/DC power adapter), kids seven years and up can create a host of insects using the kit’s supply of low voltage connectors.

While kids are encouraged to use their imagination, the “World of Bugs” kit comes with a set of “factoids” for building accurate renditions. An award winning toy company, Laser Pegs teaches important lessons on electric currents and construction for a cognitive learning experience that will spawn the next generation of D.I.Y. developers.

World of Bugs” will sell for $60 beginning May 2011 from Laser Pegs, where you can find a wide assortment of other models and kits.

Urban Shed International Design Competition

Re-imagined scaffolding hits the streets of NYC with three finalists’ winning prototypes

by Passa C

urbanshed1.jpg

Protecting pedestrians from both debris and the rain, NYC construction scaffolding is a major part of the urban landscape yet mostly considered an inconvenient eyesore. With nearly 6,000 sheds spanning more than 1 million linear feet throughout the city, NYC Department of Buildings along with several partners challenged designers to re-think these sheds with the Urban Shed International Design Competition.

urbanshed2.jpg

The team of nine judges—including Snøhetta director Craig Dykers (the architecture and design studio spearheading NYC’s National September 11 Memorial Museum Pavilion) and NYC Department and Buildings Commissioner Robert LiMandri—recently selected the three finalists who will advance to Stage II of the competition. During this phase each of the three designs will be built and installed on a job site in Lower Manhattan. The selected winner will receive city certification and the design will become industry standard and used for future construction projects.

urbanshed3.jpg

The new sidewalk sheds will revolutionize the NYC cityscape as well as the pedestrian experience. The winning design should increase light and visibility, complement both commercial and residential facades, intuitively guide pedestrians, use more sustainable materials and make maintenance more economical. To see more of the final three designs and all of the entries, visit Urban Shed.
