Donna Karan Approached Fall Collection with Consciousness Intact

DonnaKaran FIAF.jpg

What’s a designer to do after attending last week’s TED conference and before showing a collection during New York Fashion Week? Well, if you’re Donna Karan, you spend the evening in conversation with Pamela Golbin—curator-in-chief of twentieth century and contemporary fashion at the Musée de la Mode et du Textile in Paris—and a sold-out crowd of fans (we spotted Fern Mallis among them) at New York’s French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF). Last night, Karan kicked off FIAF’s 2009 Fashion Talks series on a pensive and passionate note, reflecting on her own career in fashion while providing the audience with a few cryptic hints about the Donna Karan New York fall 2009 collection that she will show on Monday afternoon at her Greenwich Street studio.

“Consciousness” was the key word of the evening. “When I think of Donna Karan the company, I think of a woman’s consciousness,” said Karan, as cinematic images from print campaigns past looped on a screen behind her. “It’s about the role that women play and the energy needed today.” Energy and emotions are also the starting points for her design process (she is more likely to be inspired by a handful rocks in East Hampton than the artists who once worked there or the seasonal zeitgeist that now does), the end point of which she characterizes as “comfortable, sensual, day to evening” and “hopefully, a mix of fantasy and function.”

Linde Werdelin: The SpidoLite Watch

SpidoLite.jpg SpidoLite2.jpg

Horological aficionados trying to balance durability with weight have a stylish new option. The SpidoLite, from Danish designers Linde Werdelin, employs a titanium casing that drastically reduces the overall weight. Reportedly made at the request of mountaineer Morten Linde before he climbed Mount Everest, the casing is drilled into an “exoskeleton” form that further lightens the load while giving it a striking, incomplete appearance.

Particularly exciting for vintage watch fans, the SpidoLite uses a 1970s automatic movement that was personally modified by founding member of the ACHI, Svend Andersen.

The SpidoLite is produced in a single batch of only 44 and will officially hit the market at BaselWorld 2009. It’s expected to retail for €9,000.

Fabrics & Linens: Kuba Cloth

 From Julie & Janet:

Lately we’ve been noticing kuba cloth used in unexpected places, such as the chic salon in Paris by Pierre Yovanovich (shown below) and the bedrooms in today’s House Call: Whitecross Farm. Also known as rafia cloth, kuba cloth is made from the leaf of the rafia tree. The Kuba artisans of the Congo hand cut, dye (using mud, indigo, or substances from the camwood tree), and then weave the strips of leaf to make the fabric. No two pieces are the same.

Above is one of the nominees, the sleek and ergonomic HomeHero Fire Extinguisher, designed by supercreative Peter Arnell for Home Depot. Those who can’t wait until Thursday can take a sneak peek at other nominees here.

The Army’s Remote-Controlled Beetle

beatle

A giant flower beetle with implanted electrodes and a radio receiver on its back can be wirelessly controlled, according to research presented this week. Scientists at the University of California developed a tiny rig that receives control signals from a nearby computer.

This is cool, freaky and yet kinda mean. Watch the video and read more here
