Experience Design 1.1: Reissued

Everyone who’s everyone [sic] these days talks about Experience Design, but 8 years ago, when the book Experience Design first came out, the approach was pioneering. Nathan Shedroff, its author and the guy who basically invented the term, has just come out with a reissue of this seminal book, with new text, new examples, and a new title, appropriately Experience Design 1.1. (That’s gotta be the best usage yet.) Here’s from the release:

At the beginning of this century, many people confused Experience Design with Web, digital, or interactive design. Many didn’t connect design with the development of all experiences, whether realtime/realspace or virtual” explains, Nathan Shedroff. “Now, it’s finally become clear to most that the brand experience of any offering must be consistent, compelling, and delightful through all touchpoints in all media.” The book explains 50 topics of experience design, highlighting both a digital and non-digital example of each.

Elizabeth Soule uploaded these to her Flickr stream last night and they immediately caught my eye! I asked her what inspired these images:

“I found these letters at a shop, there was a whole set of them that I originally bought to spell out generic words that you would see on card, like “thank you”, “happy birthday”. While photographing I was really uninspired by “happy birthday” and began to play around and think of adjectives that or phrases that I like to use or hear often. I chose a solid colored background to let the letters pop and to also enhance the mood that each word made me feel. The cameras are the beginning of an idea “if these objects could talk” that I’m exploring.”

Renzo Rosso: Diesel Planet Store Fifth Avenue

Fresh off a smoke, Renzo Rosso sat down with us to answer a few questions about Diesel’s newest and largest Planet store on swanky Fifth Avenue in NYC. Looking more Mick Jagger than his revered neighbor Armani, it’s clear this store is more rock’n’roll than Rockefeller. Located at the corner of 54th Street, the doors open today, just four hours before Renzo bares his Fall 2009 collection a few blocks away at Bryant Park.

What was your role in creating the Diesel Planet store?

My role? I had so many roles, we changed the store so many times. I am very well involved in the interior design, the construction was not easy because before the place was composed of many little rooms and we wanted to adapt it to our business spirit. It was a little bit difficult but in the end we are very happy because it’s very nice, it’s very Diesel, very modern.

You said before that in today’s economy a brand can be very creative for not a huge investment. Do you not consider this store to be a huge investment?

It is a big investment but you have to consider that we are a very solid company, we work with our own money, we don’t need any banks to finance us. We see this particular moment as a good moment for the company and thanks to our solid position we will be able to use this to become stronger for the future.

What is your personal definition of innovation?

Innovation is always trying to do something different, something fresh, something more modern over what’s existing. Something that is actual for the moment, for the consumer, trying to be in time with what we need. I think we are because when we see the results of the retail we are up while a lot of companies are down.

You do a lot of collaborative work with people like Viktor & Rolf and Marc Jacobs, how do you view collaborations?

It’s good for me because I have the possibility to deal with different designers and a different market and consumer, it allows me a different way to think. It’s fantastic because it makes me a lucky man that I have the possibility to share a lot of opinions. I am so happy to have all of these good designers on board because they give me a lot of energy everyday to do better.

Do you hope that the Diesel store has a line going around the corner like Abercrombie & Fitch does a few blocks away?

I hope! I hope we have a line for all of our stores around the world, a line of people waiting to buy our jeans. I think it’s a dream for everybody to have a line of people waiting to buy your product. We are happy though because the result is very good for the moment.

Designing with sustainable materials

This spring the Cooper Hewitt museum in New York will host an exhibition called “Design for the Living World” that will showcase innovative designs commissioned by the Nature Conservancy.

Ten designers were each given a local sustainable material to create new products with. Seven of them got the opportunity to travel to the material’s place of origin. The image above is of NYC based designer Steve Burks.

“We wanted to bring out a whole gamut of responses to the idea of engagement with materials and communities,” Miller explains. “We didn’t want to insist upon full-on product designs with guaranteed markets of some kind.” Lupton adds

Continuum: Rethinking Green for Lean Times

What happened to the green consumer? Sales of hybrid cars, organic food, and solar panels are on the wane, as recession fears forced the hand of the Whole Foods class. The self-described greenies were supposed to lead as early adopters, a small but growing group of committed and conscious consumers willing to vote with their wallets and drive the green business revolution. Yet a new study published by design firm Continuum suggests that this niche understanding of green behavior may have blinded us to a less faddish and more mainstream trend that fits our more frugal times.

Over a year ago, Continuum, which was one of the first global firms to adopt the Designers Accord, launched the aptly named Colorblind research study to understand how people were re-orienting themselves to the idea of environmentally friendly design. Using sophisticated research techniques such as in context ethnography and follow up conversations with over 7,000 people in an online community setting, Continuum focused their efforts on everyday Americans who may or may not consider themselves green. Kristin Heist, one of the designers who lead the study, explained, “part of our interest in taking on the project was in exploring who we could make sustainability more part of the mainstream. We felt like there were plenty of people chasing after the leading edge ‘green’ consumers. That was a problem, because, to be completely idealistic for a moment, if we are going to save the world, we need to make everyone a part of it.”

What Continuum did differently than most standard research studies on purchase intent was to go behind the cover story everyone tells about green. When you ask the average consumer if they are interested in products that cause less environmental harm, they tend to say yes. But when you follow them around the supermarket or visit them in their own homes, you are able to get closer to the truth. What did Continuum discover?
