Design For The Other 90%

The National Geographic Museum will open a new exhibition this Wednesday, April 28 called Design for the Other 90%, a touring exhibition from the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in NYC. The exhibition takes a look at designers who are developing solutions that address basic needs for the vast majority of the world’s population not traditionally served by professional designers. Of the world’s 6.5 billion people, 90% have few to none of the basic necessities required for progress and survival.

Defining The Value of Design

It took 1 money counter and 2218 custom bills to create this well done stop-action video to help promote the 2010 Design Currency Conference that will be held in Vancouver later this month. The theme of this years event is ‘Defining the Value of Design’. Hat tip to the creatives at Giant Ant Media and Rethink. For more on the event go here.

Michael Bierut Talks Clients

2010/01 Michael Bierut from CreativeMornings on Vimeo.

In January, Michael Bierut was invited to speak at SwissMiss’ Creative Mornings. His insight on the issue of “clients” is a must see for any working designer. It’s an hour long, but well worth your time.

Reflections: The Designers Accord Global Summit on Sustainability & Education

Andrea Mangini, a lead experience designer at Adobe Systems has written a fabulous article for Core77 that is worth a read. The piece reflects on the ideas and concepts that were shared at the Designers Accord Global Summit on Sustainability and Education that went down in late October in San Francisco.

Excerpt from article:
“We were facing the ambitious task of co-creating and publishing a toolkit for integrating principles of sustainability into design education. In a sense, we were being challenged to collaboratively design the next generation of designers.”
