Serpentine by Eléonore Nalet

Serpentine by Eléonore Nalet

Cologne 2011: French designer Eléonore Nalet presented this chair with long cushions woven through its metal frame at imm cologne in Germany last month.

Serpentine by Eléonore Nalet

Called Serpentine, the design turns metal outdoor seating into a cosy cocoon for long summer evenings.

Serpentine by Eléonore Nalet

imm cologne took place 18-23 January. See all our coverage of the event »

Serpentine by Eléonore Nalet

The details below are from Eléonore Nalet:

Serpentine is an armchair designed for sitting outside all year long. The delicate metallic structure reminds one of winter vegetation. When Summer comes back, Serpentine is dressed with long colored cushions that entwine the backrest and armrests supports.

Serpentine by Eléonore Nalet

You can still glimpse the underlying metal frame, but your body will never feel its touch. The weaving creates a comfortable and welcoming irregular upholstery.

Materials – metal frame, outdoor textile (Sunbrella), and foam.
Dimensions – W80 , H72- seat 40, D55

Workspace of the Week: Built-in beauty

This week’s Workspace of the Week is JWhelan’s custom-fitted home office:

The ample storage supply in this office is breathtaking. The glass on the cabinet doors lets objects be seen, but without having to dust. The monitors mounted directly to the wall is a wonderful idea for freeing up the worksurface.

More details from JWhelan’s photo description:

My home office in my new house. It features a hidden desktop PC (left hand cabinet, along with HP printer) with wall-mounted dual 22″ widescreen monitors with custom in-wall wiring, under-cabinet lighting over the monitors and desk and plenty of shelves for my growing collection of books. The recliner in the corner admittedly doesn’t match the color decor – I am awaiting a slipcover to bring it more in-line with the color scheme.

A wonderfully designed and clutter-free space. Thank you, JWhelan, for sharing it with our Flickr us.

Want to have your own workspace featured in Workspace of the Week? Submit a picture to the Unclutterer flickr pool. Check it out because we have a nice little community brewing there. Also, don’t forget that workspaces aren’t just desks. If you’re a cook, it’s a kitchen; if you’re a carpenter, it’s your workbench.

Social Centre by Imago

Photographer José Campos has sent us some images of a social centre in Brufa, Portugal, by Portuguese studio Imago.

Social Centre by Imago

Apertures have been carved out of the rectangular concrete volume, creating little slits and openings all around the building.

Social Centre by Imago

Openings in the roof plan create little courtyard areas flooded with natural light.

Social Centre by Imago

In contrast to the exterior façade, the interior features glazed walls that wrap around the courtyards.

A day care facility, rest home, offices and service areas are housed within the building, all oraganised aroung a central patio.

The following information is from the architects:

Social Centre – Brufe
Brufe, Vila Nova de Famalicão, Portugal
Inaugurated 2010

Based on a block form some openings are carved to illuminate the interior space or in most cases tearing and piercing the building to its inner courtyard.

Social Centre by Imago

The building is turned inside out: the exterior façades look opaque, dense, with just a few carves in the main points of the building like the stairs and the main entrance.

Social Centre by Imago

The interior façades appear as a translucid and continuous glass curtain wall that embrace the internal patio shaded by proposed trees.

Social Centre by Imago

In the top portion of the mass each carving provokes an event with its surroundings, covered parking spaces, main entrance, and a covered seating area for open air events.

Social Centre by Imago

The programs criteria includes day care, rest home, office and service areas and is organized in functional blocks surrounding a central court yard.

The physical communication within itself accentuates permanent visual relationship.

The interconnection or independence when necessary is distributed in a permanent manner.

Couture Spring 2011 – Elie Saab, Jean Paul Gaultier, Valentino

imageFor day three of the spring 2011 couture shows from Paris, Elie Saab created ooh-and-aah worthy confections that were just aching for a little red carpet, Jean Paul Gaultier rabble-roused with a punk-meets-Pigalle-inspired show, and the house of Valentino presented moody Victorian-era separates.

The Best of Both Worlds: ‘Designers & Books’ Launches

More than likely, judging from the fact that you’ve landed on this site, you like both designers and reading. So why not combine the two (well, more than reading great UnBeige content each and every day)? So has happened with the launch of the new collaborative project, Designers & Books. Founded and edited by Archetype‘s Steve Kroeter, along with Stephanie Salomon, and helped brought to life by a team of others, the site says it “is devoted to publishing lists of books that esteemed members of the design community identify as personally important, meaningful, and formative.” As of their launch this week, we’d say that they’re off to a pretty amazing start, collecting book picks from 50 of the top names in the business, including Robert Venturi, Elizabeth Diller, Peter Eisenman and Paula Scher (who was likely one of the easier gets, along with Michael Bierut, considering Pentagram handled the site’s design). While there are a small handful of essays available on the site, it’s largely lists of books and no more than that. What’s more, the books picked by these famous designers aren’t all design-related either. They’re just their favorites, or ones that influenced their work in some way. Though there is some sparse commentary about selections here and there, by and large, most participants haven’t added notes explaining their choices. And this won’t hinder your browsing in the least. If anything, it makes you feel a little more connected to these industry luminaries. “Hey, I’ve read that book and so has Norman Foster!” we thought to ourselves more than a couple of times while scanning his picks. It’s early days for Designers & Books, and we’re looking forward to watching it grow.
