A corner of my bedroom over at Bodie and Fou*

  Bedroombloesem2

Perhaps you saw my bedroom appear over at the great Bodie&Fou blog yesterday… Karine invited me to be part of her 'A corner of my bedroom' series … and I enjoyed looking at my own bedroom like this!

Bedroombloesem

a short story I had written about our bedroom: "The Master bedroom! That is where my husband and I are currently sleeping…a little over a year ago we moved to a real house after living in apartments all our lives and while searching for this house we saw many 'huge' master-bedrooms, apparently very important here in Asia. For us it feels like having a second living-room and I must say we spend quite some time here…

Sunday mornings, evenings and when the family wants to watch a movie…the only real TV in our house is in our bedroom. I have tried to make it cozy by adding some nostalgia and sentimental accessories…like a patchwork blanket that I made myself from fabrics that my mom gave to me, my photo-album from when I was a baby, some vintage vases and the old telephone from the Netherlands. A picture of me and my sister is hanging above my bedside table and only recently I added the textile fabric wall decal (yes also made them myself). I love my new necklaces from Kristina Klarin and the yellow hanger is there to give some color to the wall. I wish was allowed to paint the floor black or white…."

Thank You Karine for the lovely invitation!

Singularities

3Sixteen details three of their uniquely talented clients in video

In celebration of the unique individuals that wear 3Sixteen, the denim-focused label recently created a series of videos showing off their customers’ talents and hardworking lifestyles. The trio of intriguing mini-docs, all profiling people in their homebase of NYC and cleverly titled “Singularities,” follows the dedicated coffee roasters at The Coffee Foundry, the skilled tattoo artists at Invisible Ink and the laid-back drummer Jahphet Landis. Directed by Kellen Dengler, the vignettes capture each of their subjects without ever mentioning 3Sixteen. This subtle brand-building project, much like their clothing, keeps it about the product not the name.

ched-3sixteen1.jpg

We had the pleasure of getting to know just how the clothing company works when we collaborated with Andrew Chen and the 3Sixteen team late last year on a series of ties made from locally-sourced wool in Manhattan’s Garment District. Like everything the brand produces, the attention to detail and commitment to craft really shines in each of the four styles, with a simple label hand-sewn on the back.

Dengler and the team are still searching for the fourth subject for the Singularities series. If you think your talents deserve some airtime, submit your work using one of their various online platforms for the project before 1 April 2011. To get your hands on one of our remaining collaborative ties, check them out in our online shop, where they sell for $80 each.

Production Methods: Arne Jacobsen’s Series 7 chair

0series7prodmeth.jpg

It’s shot and edited like a European film of the variety one spouse drags another to see, but the following vid is a great look at how a bentwood chair is made. And not just any chair, the Arne-Jacobsen-designed Series 7 made by Republic of Fritz Hansen. It starts off with sheets of veneer, then you get to see which parts humans do and which parts the machines do:

The thing we’d love to see: Footage of how they made the Series 7 back in 1955 when it was first designed, pre-triple-CNC router.

Toy Design: Cubelets, modular robotic blocks

0cubelets.jpg

If the company Modular Robotics existed years ago, and if my memory of grammar school serves me correctly, here’s what would have happened: Most of us would be playing with Legos; one kid would be playing with the Cubelets seen in the video below; then we would all beat that one kid up, out of some primal sense of inferiority or insecurity. And we probably wouldn’t even take his toy, but just break it.

Cubelets are modular, robotic little bricks that perform different mechanical and sensorial tasks. You snap them together and the Sense Blocks become the “input”–i.e. detecting proximity, responding to physical stimuli–and the Action Blocks provide the output, i.e. moving, rotating, making noise.

Retail Cubelets will be produced in colors, but the prototypes seen in the video are monochrome. They are all black. To mirror the darkness that lurks within the hearts of children.

Ji Ga Zo

Design your own reusable puzzle with this digitally-enabled toy
jigazo1.jpg

Whether it’s the Mona Lisa or Snooki that you want to envision in puzzle form, Ji Ga Zo makes it easy with their DIY kit. Using the included software (both Mac and Windows compatible) turns any photo (or one of the five included designs) into a map, which coordinates with icons on the back of the sepia-shaded pieces to create a mosaic image.

The 300 piece set can be used over and over again, or you can frame your masterpiece for hanging. Previously only available in Japan, you can now pick up your own Ji Ga Zo for $25 from Hasbro.

Core77 Gallery: NAIAS 2011 Gallery + Wrapup

NAIAS-Gallery-2011.jpg

America is back.

At this year’s North American International Auto Show, Ford and Chrysler stole the show with their exhibits and products. As they say in America, “Bigger is Better” and their exhibits were on-par with the Germans (the krauts always set the bar for exhibit design,) but much, much bigger. Besides exhibition design, both Ford and Chrysler are rolling out great new product after great new product. They both killed it; I can’t emphasize enough how well they showed.

With the exception of the vintage Corvette, the GM booth, on the other hand, wasn’t very interesting. I later realized that I didn’t take many shots of their exhibit — not to mention that there has been more than enough pictures of a hybrid disguising itself as an electric car. It has one-sixth the range of a 4-year-old Tesla Roadster and none of the beautiful proportions that made the 2007 concept car penned by Nigerian-born designer Jelani Aliyu so exciting.

Speaking of American car companies and Tesla, Tesla didn’t have a prototype Model S on the stand, but they did have an Alpha build body and powertrain in glorious raw aluminum und schteel exploded view. To fully appreciate how awesome the design engineering of this car is, watch the Vimeo films with Peter Rawlinson (formerly of Lotus and chief engineer of some of the best cars in the world) below.

Daily Obsesh – Akawelle Necklace

imageGive someone the gift of LIFE this Valentine’s Day and any day with the Akawelle necklace made from spent bullet casings. Sounds a bit strange to you? Trust us! This couldn€™t be a better symbol of love!

The story starts in the refugee camps of Ghana where thousands of Liberians fled to during the civil war. Lovetta Conto was one of those refugees. Here she was approached by the Strongheart Fellowship Program and from that moment her dream of being a designer started looking more like a reality.

Lovetta created the Akawelle necklace, meaning ‘also known as LOVE’. It features two pendants, a leaf inscribed with the word LIFE, made from the bullet casings that litter the streets of Liberia, and a single bead which is the bottom of the bullet shell. This necklace represents the idea that there is the promise of life even through strife and hardship. Proceeds help to aid the Strongheart House where children from warring countries come for a chance at a better life.

What could possibly be more romantic than giving someone a chance at a better life?

Stockholm Furniture Fair 2011:Corentin Dombrecht’s "Megaphones" speakers

corentindombrecht_speakers.jpg

Young Belgian designer Corentin Dombrecht, showing off his work at the “101% Designed in Brussels” stand, told us that he was inspired to create his “Megaphones” speakers by the wave of protest and activism currently sweeping the globe—”just like Egypt, no?”.

So far, Corentin is producing these awesome pieces himself, but has been working hard at the fair to try and get some manufacturers interested.
