Playful Pixel Furniture

The Tarta series of outdoor furniture is a clever combination of industrial design, art and technology that offers a contemporary look at transforming the virtual world into the real world! Inspiration for the chair and table was found in geometry consisting of multiple modules that remind of the diamond-shaped pixels of modern displays. These hexagons are matched to each and bent to become three dimensional, creating a texture by variable thickness that moves in space to create an enveloping seat and table top.

“Shape is one thing, research and material is another”

Movie: jury member Tobias Lutz reveals the winners of the Unique Youngstar outdoor product design competition in our second movie from garden trade show Spoga+Gafa.

Tobias Lutz of Architonic

Students and young designers were invited to submit prototypes of garden or outdoor products for the Unique Youngstar competition, 15 of which were shortlisted and displayed at the Garden Unique area of Spoga+Gafa in Cologne earlier this month.

“The Unique Youngstar competition was started in order to develop new ideas in the garden furnishing and garden products field, which is a growing industry,” explains Lutz, CEO of products database Architonic and a member of the Unique Youngstar jury.

“It took a long time [for the jury] to decide the winner. We decided on three projects for the first three places and one special mention.”

"Shape is one thing, research and material is another"

First prize went to French designer Thibault Penven for his foldable boat Ar Vag, which comprises a wooden bench, fibreglass poles and a PVC skin, and is put together like a tent.

"Shape is one thing, research and material is another"

“It is one of the projects where we really see tremendous depth of research,” says Lutz. “Shape is one thing, research and material is another thing and this project really shows a passion for an idea. It goes far and the result it surprising. I think that’s really what we call design.”

"Shape is one thing, research and material is another"

Dutch designer Francien Hazen was awarded second place for her Watercabinet, which attaches to a downpipe to collect rainwater and houses a water butt, pump, hose, tap and even a small greenhouse.

"Shape is one thing, research and material is another"

“We gave the second prize to an extended drainpipe,” says Lutz. “What is beautiful in this idea is the designer decided to use the water to add a functionality to this drainpipe and make it charming in a very Dutch way.”

"Shape is one thing, research and material is another"

Swedish designer Matilda Lindblom picked up the third prize for her collection of garden furniture called Contio.

"Shape is one thing, research and material is another"

“What we like [about these products] is the different applications of materials, of old technologies with new technologies,” Lutz explains.

"Shape is one thing, research and material is another"

Swiss designer Markus Bangerter‘s Polufine chair made of heat-moulded textile straps also got a special mention from the jury.

"Shape is one thing, research and material is another"

“This is not for the end result of the product that we saw,” says Lutz. “It’s more the way the designer researched how to develop new ways to stabilise textile plastic straps and heat them and get them to a stable construction.”

“The current trend is to have an outdoor kitchen”

Movie: Katrin Schön of garden trade fair Spoga+Gafa shows Dezeen around the Garden Unique section of this year’s show and discusses the growing trend for outdoor cooking in this movie filmed in Cologne.

"The current trend is to have an outdoor kitchen"

Garden Unique is a showcase of premium garden furniture at the Spoga+Gafa trade fair, which took place at Koelnmesse in Cologne earlier in September.

"The current trend is to have an outdoor kitchen"
Katrin Schön

“We do this area especially for the furniture traders,” explains Schön, project manager of this year’s show. “In Germany outdoor living is very popular.”

"The current trend is to have an outdoor kitchen"

Schön says that the market for cooking and eating outside is growing rapidly and there is now a demand not just for grills and barbecues, but full outdoor kitchens.

“The Germans love grilling, the grilling market is the fastest growing market in recent years,” she says. “It’s a trend to have an outdoor kitchen.”

“Not only the Germans, I think the Europeans like to be outside and here at the fair you have a whole range of products for it.”

"The current trend is to have an outdoor kitchen"

One of the brands showing a range of outdoor kitchens at this year’s show was German company OCQ. Nadine Pollex of OCQ says the trend is due to the increasing size and importance of outdoor spaces.

“Outdoor spaces continue to grow, people have big lounges and big tables,” she says. “There are guests and guests like to eat, so you need an outdoor kitchen.”

"The current trend is to have an outdoor kitchen"

There were many garden products besides kitchens at Garden Unique, including an array of chairs, tables and daybeds.

"The current trend is to have an outdoor kitchen"

One of the more unusual products on show was a shower that you connect to a garden hose by Swedish company Röshults. Tobias Lindberg of Röshults agrees that outdoor living is becoming more and more popular.

"The current trend is to have an outdoor kitchen"

“Our experience is that people want to be more outside,” he says. “We see all these new types of modern architectural houses and we want to do products for those types of houses.”

Serac Bench by Zaha Hadid for Lab23

Milan 2013: Zaha Hadid imagined a block of ice formed in the crevasses of a glacier for the design of this bench, launching this week in the Tortona district of Milan.

The Serac Bench, designed by Zaha Hadid for street furniture brand Lab23, is made from a resin and quartz composite that gives it a sparkling white colour.

The surface of the bench is shaped into a series of smooth ridges and curves, and a single arch forms a backrest on one side.

The piece is on show at the Officine della Torneria, Via Novi, 5, just around the corner from Dezeen’s movie studio at the MINI Paceman Garage.

Here’s some more information from Zaha Hadid Architects:

Zaha Hadid for Lab23

Zaha Hadid’s concept of urban furniture to be seamlessly integrated with its context and Lab23’s experience coalesce into the Serac Collection, especially the Serac Bench, the urban bench designed by the architect and designer for the renowned street furniture label.

The concept behind the Serac Bench, which will be presented at Fuorisalone 2013, at the Officine della Torneria from April 8th to 14th, is evoked by the image of a block of ice formed by intersecting crevasses in a glacier. Developed as an urban sculpture for seating and resting, the Serac Bench seamlessly integrates with its context. Its striated articulations emerge from the landscape, each layer taking its own unique trajectory in reaction to latent forces that disperse – and ultimately coalesce – the many strata of the bench to generate its overall formal composition. The design rediscovers the fluid, continuous nature of Zaha Hadid’s work – exploring relationships between full and void, object and background, form and function; an evolutionary pattern that is evident throughout her repertoire.
The bench has been developed in resin quartz, a tough and durable material that when shaped into a more curvaceous form, transitions into a softer, fluid and tactile surface. The sparkling crystal balances a stunning light play with mesmerizing depth.

Lab23, with numerous collaborations with world-renowned architects and designers under its belt, will present the Serach Bench together with its entire collection of street furniture, developed with innovative and enviromentally friendly materials, which have always characterized the brand. Five and Sofa are designed to furnish urban living rooms with ottomans, side tables and sofas. On the other hand, line S, designed by Veronica Martinez, consists of benches and flower boxes that recall the winding shape of an S. Stéphane Chapelet developed benches, tables and Zadig, a steel seat which features an interesting texture thanks to its laser cutting.

At Fuorisalone 2013, and after focusing mainly on public spaces, Lab23 will have the chance to present Aria23, a collection of outdoor furniture dedicated to the general public that distinguishes itself for a unique sensitivity for enviromental impact. For Aria23, architecture studio Marconato e Zappa, has developed a selection of décors.

The common and idenitfying feature of this collection is indeed the use of WPC, wood and plastic composit, an entirely recyclable material.

Gardenias by Jaime Hayón for BD Barcelona Design

Milan 2013: Spanish designer Jaime Hayón presents aluminium and terracotta outdoor furniture designed for BD Barcelona Design in this movie. The collection went on show at Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan earlier today.

Gardenias by Jaime Hayon for BD Barcelona Design

Jaime Hayon‘s Gardenias collection is part of an ongoing collaboration with Catalan furniture brand BD Barcelona Design. “The story with BD Barcelona starts back in 2004,” says Hayón in the movie. “At that time I’d never really designed a chair, I was doing more art work. When we met for the first time we wanted to create something that had to be fun.”

Gardenias by Jaime Hayon for BD Barcelona Design

The new collection, entitled Gardenias, includes cast aluminium seating in muted colours and terracotta vessels with small hoods.

Armchairs and benches in the collection have slatted backs, with some extending over to form canopies. Hayón explains: “For some reason in the history of making chairs for terraces or outdoor spaces we’ve lost the glamour, we’ve lost the passion for delicacy.”

The chairs have padded seats and backs, with aluminium tubes that loop around to form armrests and flick out to create feet. “We have worked with aluminium in the way you would work with wood,” adds Hayón.

Shelving units in a similar style consist of three semi-circular platforms that sit under a half dome.

Other items in the range include handmade terracotta flower pots in a selection of smooth sculptural shapes and a white watering can with two golden handles and a golden spout.

Hayón previosuly created 40 hand-painted vases for the brand’s 40th birthday and has previously exhibited tubular furniture for Sé.

Bikers Rest by Marcus Abrahamsson for Nola

Stockholm 2013: Swedish designer Marcus Abrahamsson devised this bollard with a foot rest and handle to help cyclists keep their balance at traffic lights.

Ficelle chair by Osko and Deichmann for Ligne Roset

Cologne 2013: Berlin design studio Osko+Deichmann has launched a chair inspired by cooked spaghetti for French brand Ligne Roset.

Called Ficelle, meaning “string” in English, the chair is made from aluminium and is designed for both indoor and outdoor use. It comes in either black or white, along with an optional seat pad.

“Inspired by the smooth curves of cooked spaghetti, Ficelle is a unique poetic chair, nicely curved, fluid and light,” say the designers.

The lightweight tubular legs continue along the sides of the seat and up the side of the backrest before curling over and down to become the back legs. These distinctive profiles are linked by aluminium slats that have been evenly spaced along the seat and back of the chair.

Osko+Deichmann was founded in 2005 by Blasius Osko and Oliver Deichmann, who met while studying at the University of Fine Arts, Berlin. We’ve featured projects from Osko + Deichmann before, including the Straw stackable chairs for Blå Station, and a collection of tubular steel and pine furniture called Kink.

imm cologne took place from 14 to 20 January. Other products launched at the fair included an asymmetrical desk by Thibault Desombre for Ligne Roset and a DIY curtain kit by the Bouroullec brothers.

Park Life by Jasper Morrison for Kettal

Here’s some more information from the designers:

Park Life by Jasper Morrison and Kettal

“This is my first outdoor collection and it has taken some time to get here: about four and a half years! It probably took that long because we needed to discover the right codes for Outdoor Furniture, which is a category apart from other types of furniture. It has been an interesting process and we have been through many prototypes to get here but I think the result justifies the effort.

Park Life by Jasper Morrison for Kettal

“Park Life is a complete family of furniture for outdoors, whose clean cut profile is adaptable to a wide range of different situations. Lightweight yet extremely durable, it’s easily stacked for transport or winter storage and its technical sophistication and careful consideration of ergonomics besides a lot of care over how it looks are all intended to ensure a long life, both structurally and visually.”
