Pivot from Defy Bags

The military-grade bag maker goes streamlined

Pivot from Defy Bags

Based in Chicago, Defy is a manufacturer of heavy-duty bags constructed from heavy-duty military-grade and upcycled materials. The products are unabashedly overkill—considering their customers are mostly techies and non-traditional businessmen—but as founder Chris Tag explains, the feel of the materials in hand justifies the lot. Defy Bags has just…

Design Old Military Airplanes

The Conditions of Winter

Rinat Voligamsi reimagines found photographs of Russian military life

Rinat-Gallery-1.jpg

Drawing on his experience in the Red Army,
Rinat Voligamsi
paints from photographs of early Russian military life to reinterpret the bleak conditions in his current show “The Conditions of Winter.” The exhibition opens today at London’s Erarta Gallery, an outpost of the largest non-governmental contemporary art museum in Russia, exploring themes of humanity in the face of power and authority.

Rinat-1.jpg Rinat2-.jpg

Though he paints with nearly mathematical precision, Voligamsi is no photorealist. Deft surrealist alterations range from tiny, exquisite details—burning cigarette embers create the Great Bear constellation—to major transformations, like figures that are cut in half, duplicated or inverted.

Rinat-7.jpg

By manipulating the photographs while staying true to the look and feel of the originals, the resulting distorted scenes seamlessly merge the documentary reality with the artist’s vision, blending fact and fiction to make powerful statements.

Rinat4.jpg Rinat3.jpg

Voligamsi’s altered figures seemingly come to life, suggesting the absurdities of living under tyranny as well as the potential for resistance to spin powerful metaphors about what happens to people under state supression.

The Conditions of Winter runs through 19 November 2011.

Maharishi Tactical

Palladium’s latest collaborative boot updates a classic with reflective tech

Palladium-and-M1.jpg Palladium-and-M2.jpg

Pairing an expert in military style with specialists in combat-level functionality, Palladium‘s cobranded boot with London-based fashion label Maharishi is one to keep in mind this fall. The Maharishi Tactical, inspired by “special forces and survival,” will be replacing my go-to inclement-weather boots since a recent wear test proved just how great they are.

Palladium-x-M-1.jpg Palladium-x-M-2.jpg

Rubberized leather and ballistic nylon give the boot it’s distinct “tactical” look while Dri-lex lining wicks away moisture, keeping your foot firmly in place. Adding a tech touch to the clean aesthetic, Swiss-made Schoeller Dynatec on the boot’s back panel provides highly-visible reflectivity in harsh weather conditions. The woven fabric shines with the strength of a million tiny glass beads, capable of being seen from up to 100 meters away in all light conditions.

To keep the aesthetic clean, nearly all branding is restricted to the inner. Here you’ll find Maharishi in bright bold lettering printed on the inside of the padded collar of each boot. The Maharishi Tactical boot is now available at Palladium stores and online for $185.

Goruck Brick Bag

New add-on compartments from the makers of military-grade gear
brickbag1.jpg

The expectations for any great backpack are simple—strength, functionality and dependability. Goruck was born from a career Special Forces member’s experiences in the field. Based on the necessity for high performance gear in extreme situations, Goruck has brought that military toughness to a consumer level. Today, going a step beyond their more traditional rucksacks, Goruck debuts the latest edition in their line, a modular add-on for organizing stowage.

brickbag2.jpg

The Brick Bag is a result of the Goruck Challenges, up to 10-hour-long team endurance events where participants carry Goruck bags filled with bricks as they engage in physically rigorous activity. During events they needed a way to separate the bricks they were carrying from the other contents of the bag. The solution was the creation of a new bag-within-a-bag thats lets the user customize their gear, creating additional compartments on the fly.

In addition to acting as a stuff-sack, the bag can also be used as a compression bag—allowing for squishing down of clothes or other soft materials to a more manageable size. The Brick Bag reflects the strength, simplicity and military-styling of the entire Goruck line while maintaining their modern design.

The bag is available from Goruck’s online store for $95.
