Product news: Spanish studio Lievore Altherr Molina has designed a family of triangular tables and stools for Italian brand Arper.

Ply by Lievore Altherr Molina for Arper

The Ply collection comprises low tables and stools each made from a single plane of wood, which curves over from the bottom of one leg to the base of two others.

The tables are available in two different sizes and come in either red, black or a natural oak finish.

The stools come in three different heights, suitable for low tables, dining tables or bars. They are available in black or natural oak.

Arper will present the collection in Milan next month, where Tom Dixon is showing his Rough & Smooth collection and Citco will unveil an edition of marble tables by Zaha Hadid.

Lievore Altherr Molina has previously designed a number of other products for Arper, including the hourglass-shaped Saya chairs that were showcased at the launch of the brand’s London showroom in October last year.

New furniture and lighting collection by Resident

Product news: here’s a slideshow of new furniture and pendant lamps that New Zealand furniture company Resident will present in Milan next month.

Resident will show furniture and lighting by Phil Cuttance, Jamie McLellan, Simon James and their own design studio at creative hub MOST, situated in Milan’s Museum of Science and Technology.

Last year in Milan the Auckland-based company exhibited products including a pendant lamp made of white clay sourced from a bay in New Zealand.

Other designs that will be launched at MOST include Tom Dixon’s range of faceted furniture.

Rough & Smooth collection by Tom Dixon

Product news: British designer Tom Dixon’s latest collection, launching at MOST in Milan next month, includes solid brass champagne buckets and faceted furniture inspired by gemstones (+ slideshow).

Tom Dixon’s Rough & Smooth collection includes Gem, a family of angular lights, tables and mirrors inspired by gemstones and sand-cast from nickel-plated aluminium.

The Spun champagne bucket and tables are made from sheets of hand-spun solid brass polished to a mirror finish.

The Flask light combines a ridged sphere of hand-blown glass with a smoked glass hood, while the Cell light is inspired by the growth of cells and made from layers of etched and polished brass.

The Bell floor lamp and table lamp have chrome-plated dome for a shade and another dome as a chunky base.

An extension of the earlier Fan chair, the Fan dining chair, stool and table are formed from machined wood spindles.

The Mass coat stand, book stand, dining table and console table are chunky pieces of furniture clad in brass, which will develop a natural patina over time.

The collection will be shown from 8 to 14 April at MOST in Milan’s National Museum of Science and Technology, an exhibition set up by Dixon last year as he explained in a filmed interview with Dezeen.

Other products by Dixon we’ve featured include a set of iridescent stoneware pendant lamps and a light that casts geometric shadows on surrounding surfaces – see all design by Tom Dixon.

Here’s some more information from the designer:

This year we take visitors through two contrasting environments – Rough and Smooth. Celebrating the joy of contrast, this year we are highlighting the opposite qualities of our new products. Rough because this season we have worked on even more textural honesty and material weight in our production. And smooth because we are still fascinated by extreme polished surfaces, sharp lines and modern manufacturing.

Follow a rollercoaster journey through the rough and tumble of our warehouse where fresh stock is unloaded and unpacked fresh from the manufacturing process and on through tearooms and shop windows into our spanking new show space which we furnish with our latest lighting and furniture, ranging from the textured sand-cast nickel- plated aluminium to the ultra-polished chromed pressed steel.

Element tables by Tokujin Yoshioka for Desalto

Product news: tables in this collection by Japanese designer Tokujin Yoshioka have tops that appear to balance precariously on angled stands (+ slideshow).

Element tables by Tokujin Yoshioka for Desalto

Rather than standing upright, the oblong supports are tilted so one bevelled corner touches the base while the tops of the Element tables teeter on another corner at the opposite end.

Element tables by Tokujin Yoshioka for Desalto

Manufactured by Italian furniture brand Desalto, the metal furniture inspired by crystal structures has been developed from experiments and research Yoshioka conducted when creating his Venus chair that he grew from crystals in 2008.

Most models in this collection have a single stave, but larger tables have two crossing supports for added stability and stands for taller side tables consist of one bar on top of another.

“These methods are process-driven and aim to explore tessellation, performative surfaces, lightweight structures and new material behaviours rather than the literal translation of appearances found in nature into visual design,” he adds.

Tram Chair by Thomas Feichtner for TON

Tram Chair by Thomas Feichtner for TON

Product news: Austrian designer Thomas Feichtner has steam-bent and laminated wood to create a chair for Czech furniture brand TON.

The legs and back rest are steam-bent into shape by clamping cylindrical wooden poles in metal moulds at the same factory that Thonet‘s iconic bent-wood chairs were made.

The laminated-wood seat shells are supported underneath by two braces, which also connect the legs.

Three bent poles form the legs and back support for the seat, with the option of adding a fourth rod with six kinks that wraps round the chair to form armrests.

Feichtner‘s chairs were named for their likeness to the plastic seats on the trams in Prague.

Colours available include dark, natural or white in a range of woods, with potential to add cloth or leather upholstery.

Thomas Feichtner sent us the following information:

Tram Chair

Furniture producer TON is a piece of Czech-Austrian industrial and design history—as well as one of the world’s oldest furniture producers. It was back in 1861 that the Viennese entrepreneur Michael Thonet established a factory to produce his synonymous bentwood furniture in Bistritz am Hostein (today’s Bystřice pod Hostýnem), in what is now the Czech Republic. This was to be Thonet’s largest furniture production site. The company was nationalized one year after the conclusion of the Second World War. During the socialist era that ensued, it was called “Továrna ohýbaného nábytku.” The initials of this name, which translates as “Factory for Bentwood Furniture,” still appear today in the brand’s logo. TON was established as a design brand as part of the company’s restructuring after the fall of the Iron Curtain. Despite having numerous political upheavals and changing ownership structures, bentwood furniture production has continued right up to the present day—without interruption and even still using some of the original machines and molds. Except for felling the trees, the entire production process—from raw timber to finished product—takes place in-house.

TON today is producing contemporary (and frequently award-winning) furniture in collaboration with established Czech and foreign designers. This way TON is giving the place of 150 years of bentwood production its honour back.

The Tram Chair arose from the TON’s most recent collaboration with the established Vienna-based product designer Prof. Thomas Feichtner. Feichtner’s concept is strongly inspired by the company’s time-honored production processes: first by the company’s own plant for the production of seat shells from moulded wood, and second by its longstanding factory for the production of classic bentwood. The intention was to unite the methods used to produce bentwood and moulded wood for the first time in a single product, thus building a bridge between traditional and contemporary furniture design. Even just the way in which the bentwood braces are connected indicates the finished product’s origin. On the other hand, the Tram Chair also features a few constructional innovations. The support for the seat shell, for instance, does double-duty as a connection between the legs. The chair thus needs no further bracing, in contrast to classic bentwood models. Though this chair’s design is quite deliberate, its name came about as more of an accident. Employees of TON were quick to jokingly dub this model the “tram chair” due to its similarity to the plastic seats on the trams in Prague. Feichtner then decided to keep this charming working title as the product’s name.

The Tram Chair will see its first public presentation at the 2013 Milan Furniture Fair. It will be offered for sale with and without armrests, with cloth or leather upholstery, and in various colors and types of wood.
