Dezeen promotion: new products by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby and a pavilion by Studio Weave will feature at this year’s Clerkenwell Design Week in London from 20 to 22 May.

Highlights of the fifth annual Clerkenwell Design are set to include installations around the central London district and product launches from prominent designers and brands.

London-based Studio Weave has designed a pavilion for St John’s Square that references Clerkenwell’s craft heritage and will host a series of workshops during the event.

Design duo Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby will showcase a new range of tiles for Domus created with Italian ceramics company Mutina.

A new line of pendant lights by Arik Levy is to be presented by Barcelona lighting manufacturer Vibia.

More lighting on show will include British studio Deadgood‘s metal laser-cut Marionette lamps and new a range of lights from UK brand Another Country by New York designers Workstead.

Trend Spotting at Clerkenwell Design Week – 20-22 May 2014

At the forefront of design and innovation, Clerkenwell Design Week (20-22 May 2014) – now in its fifth year – once again plays host to a curated showcase of some of the best creative ideas from both design and architecture. The key shows, Design Factory, Platform, Detail and Additions, will present a comprehensive collection of the latest designs by leading brands from the UK and around the world. These four shows, coupled with a range of specially commissioned projects – as part of CDW Presents, firmly place Clerkenwell Design Week as a leading festival for innovations and design trends.

Texture

A mix of materials, natural surfaces and tactile fabrics emerges as a key trend at this year’s Clerkenwell Design Week. Celebrating its 40 years of textile innovation, leading fabric brand Camira will launch its new Silk fabric, a mix of three natural fibres including flax, wool and silk. Pinch Design’s new Derome light will have its UK launch at the festival, while Swedish brand Örsjö will launch Skyline by Folkform, a new lighting collection with a pixilated effect – inspired by the architecture in Stockholm.

Architectural

Clerkenwell is renowned for its high concentration of architects, and it is only natural that this influence is reflected at Clerkenwell Design Week with architectural themed designs. Chisel & Mouse will present their scaled-down models of architecture landmarks, introducing the new Frank Lloyd Wright collection at Additions. Newcomer to the festival, Discipline will launch the sculptural Last Side Table by Max Lamb at Design Factory.

In collaboration with designers Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, Domus and Italian ceramic house, Mutina will showcase a new collection of tiles – entitled Mews – by the designers at the festival. The range is inspired by the landscape, history and personality of London. Meanwhile, Barcelona based lighting manufacturer Vibia will present Wireflow, a new line of pendant lights by Arik Levy that symbolises linear and three-dimensional geometries, on the top floor at Design Factory. For CDW Presents, architecture practice Studio Weave – led by Je Ahn – has created Smith, a pavilion that pays homage to Clerkenwell’s heritage of craft making. During the festival, a series of workshops will be held in this space on St John’s Square.

Pattern

Floral prints and colour-popping fabrics are a key trend at Clerkenwell Design Week. Newly launched African textile specialists Toghal will exhibit at the new show Additions. Their first collection takes inspiration from the Mbuti of the Congo forest and the Yoruba from Nigeria.

Pattern enthusiasts Lewis and Wood will showcase their new wallpaper and fabric collections at Detail, while Tori Murphy – known for her geometric designs – applies soft muted colours to her British made, woven textiles, resulting in a soft and luxurious look.

Craft

Another prominent trend this year is craft – products with emphasis on the maker and materials. Young designer Hend Krichen will bring her Tunisia Made collection, a series of vessels created using Tunisia’s artisanal skills and craftsmanship, to the festival.

At Platform, new design company Tamma Design – run by Estonia born Johanna Tammsalu – will showcase its porcelain Solid Spin lamps, while The Camberwell Collective, a group of third year students and recent graduates from the BA 3-D Design course at Camberwell College of Arts, will present a selection of their latest work.

Woodwork

A rustic revolution, there is a growing emphasis on natural materials in furniture design. German based Vitamin Design will bring its Stool Klotz to Clerkenwell Design Week, a solid design that embraces the natural knots and formations in the wood. Meanwhile Barnby and Day will showcase hand-made furniture from their country workshop near the picturesque Hay-on-Wye, including a new handmade range using American black walnut and oak.

As part of CDW Presents, design collective Okay Studio, supported by the American Hardwood Export Council, has produced an exhibition – entitled FIVE, to celebrate the festival’s fifth edition. Inspired by five American hardwood species – tulipwood, ash, hard maple, red oak and cherry, five design teams from Okay Studio are working independently to create an eclectic mix of designs that will be on show at the Scin Gallery during the festival.

Lighting

Lighting is always a standout feature for Clerkenwell Design Week, and this year is no different with a dedicated lighting floor at Design Factory. Leading lighting experts Holloways of Ludlow, Artemide, Anglepoise, Prandina, Catellani and Smith, Studio Italia Design and ModoLuce will showcase their lighting range in the area.

A festival regular Deadgood will present its Marionette light, made from laser cut, folded sheet metal, while British design brand Another Country will launch an exclusive new range of industrial lighting by New York design studio, Workstead.

Dezeen promotion: Japanese furniture brand Maruni Wood Industry will launch new furniture, including two wood-framed sofas, at Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan next week.

Maruni will be exhibiting a range of wooden furniture by Naoto Fukasawa and Jasper Morrison from its collection, alongside new products.

Maruni art director and industrial designer Naoto Fukasawa has created the first new sofa with a curved upholstered back that gently wraps around the body. The seat is also upholstered and rests on a simple wooden frame.

The Roundish sofa is a version of a chair Fukasawa designed for Maruni in 2011.

Maruni will also showcase the new Bruno sofa by British designer Jasper Morrison, which features full rounded cushions on a bench-like wooden frame.

Morrison also designed the Lightwood chair for Maruni in 2011.

The sofas are upholstered in Kvadrat fabrics newly acquired by Maruni: smoky green and navy.

The items have been made using woodworking techniques derived from handcrafting, shown in the movie above.

The Maruni Collection 2014 will be on show at Stand D33, Hall 6, at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan from 8 to 13 April 2014.

What is “Maruni Wood Industry”?

It is a Japanese furniture brand that continues to create sophisticated minimalism design with minute manufacturing to rediscover original spirits of the wood.

Maruni was founded in Hiroshima in 1928 with the motto of “industrialise handcrafting”. Hiroshima has a long history of lifestyle involving wood, from building structures such as Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines to private dwellings, as well as tools and artefacts that we use in our everyday lives. Although Japanese furniture production previously relied on manual labor, Maruni was one of the first to start the mass-production of furniture by the division of labor that does not rely on manual skills of artisans, aiming to “industrialise handcrafting”.

After the Second World War, Maruni Wood Industry made improvements in various production stages; for example, applying new techniques such as advanced kilning system for drying wood acquired by research and development, and learning streamlined production methods developed in Europe. These improvements brought great success to Maruni in the large-scale production of decorative European furniture, allowing it to become a leading brand of classical furniture in Japan, and grow into a high-quality furniture brand known for its traditional beauty. However, as time passes, the needs for classical furniture started to decrease in Japan, driving Maruni to develop a new line of core products.

Thus, the “Nextmaruni” project began in 2004. In this approach, Maruni aimed to introduce a series of chairs to the world with the theme of “message directed towards the Japanese aesthetic”, by collaborating with 12 globally recognised designers such as Alberto Meda, Michele De Lucchi, and so on.

This project proved to be a significant turning point for Maruni, because it was the first time it encountered Naoto Fukasawa, who later became an art director of the company. Fukasawa and Maruni deeply shared the enthusiasm to “create timeless wooden furniture that will be loved by people as a standard in a hundred years’ time”. This desire gave birth to Maruni Collection in 2008 as a coproduction of the designer and Maruni.

“Wooden chairs, that have been the worldwide standard, have a sense of warmth as a craftwork, rather than a designed product. What this collection aims to present, is this humane warmth combined with subtlety and purity,” Naoto Fukasawa says. In order to produce high-quality standard furniture, it is vital to have technology rooted in a thorough knowledge of wood and furniture production. It encompasses not only the form of the furniture, but also the seating comfort, the combination of robust structure and lightness for easy handling, and delicate finishing that brings out the most of the wood quality.

One of Maruni’s distinguished technologies recognised by designers is shaving processing technology, enables a machine to take care of complex processing procedures that previously relied on craftsmen’s manual work, contributing to high-volume production. But, in the final process, the chairs are manually polished and finished one by one. The mellow, smooth curve of Hiroshima armchair from its back to arms produces a soft, gentle atmosphere that invites people to touch. While pursuing industrialisation, Maruni has kept the balance of stable production and beauty of craftwork, by leveraging the technology and knowledge of woodwork inherited from hand to hand. You can see the spirit of “manufacturing with craftsmanship”, which has been Maruni’s tradition since its foundation.

Maruni started Maruni Collection in 2008, and welcomed Naoto Fukasawa as an art director in 2010. Jasper Morrison also joined Maruni as a designer in 2011, and this collection has grown up for covering 25 countries worldwide. The products are genuinely original to Maruni, combining the international design sensibility, uniquely Japanese aesthetics of wood material, and the detailed manufacturing techniques. They are the furniture that Maruni proudly presents to the world from Japan as a beautiful fruit of fine craftsmanship. Maruni will never stop its journey to reach even higher, producing beautiful furniture in Japan that will be long enjoyed as ultimate standards.

Dezeen promotion: Italian furniture brand B-LINE will exhibit its latest product range at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan next month.

B-LINE is to showcase German studio Neuland Paster & Geldmacher‘s Park range of outdoor seating formed from thin steel rods, which has been extended to include stackable stools in two heights.

The brand has also begun production on a series of 1960s creations by Italian designer Joe Colombo, including a soft upholstered pouf with contrast cross stitching and a stackable container module with a cylindrical hole.

Colombo’s injection-moulded plastic trolley is being introduced in a smaller size and lime green colour.

B-LINE will be located at Hall 6 Stand C37 at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile from 8 to 13 April.

2014 new entries – among fresh projects and attractive variants

B-LINE has a totally progressive view and has always proved that the value of an object transcends the historical moment in which it was designed. It is the very idea of design, as interpreted by the Paduan company, in setting itself on a different plane where quality, functionality and originality make each
of the products immune to the trends’ precariousness. A contemporary appearance and, at the same time, universal in content.

The products’ catalogue enumerates artists that have written the history of design (from Joe Colombo’s Boby and Multichair to Rodolfo Bonetto’s Boomerang and 4/4), famous designers on the international scenario and introductions that set the spotlight on new Italian realities.

2014 now counts on three new products and a significant series of interesting variants on the theme, applied to successful existing products. Collaboration with the German duo Neuland Paster & Geldmacher has been renewed with an extension to the Park family and, finally, two of Joe Colombo’s projects that had always been safely tucked away among the treasures of the Joe Colombo Studio, are being launched: a pouf and a container module.

Ring by Joe Colombo, 1964

A versatile container module, Ring consists of a painted steel plate shell and two oak shelves. On its own it can also be used as a low table; by stacking it with other modules, its capacity is increased, and can be used for wall fittings or for creating partitions. Version with swivel casters also available.
Colours – white/oak and anthracite grey/oak.

Park by Neuland Paster & Geldmacher

In galvanised and painted steel rod, Park is a stackable stool with interesting lines, sober and rigorous, just as the chair from which it evolved. It features a slender footrest and its light appearance is sustained by the sled frame on which it rests.

Suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, it is available in two heights, one for the home (66 centimetres) and the other for bar use (77 centimetres). Colours – white, black and deep orange.

Crossed by Joe Colombo, 1963

A soft upholstered pouf with contrast cross stitching, Crossed is available in two sizes, one square-based and one rectangular: by using multiple element combinations, differently shaped and coloured arrangements can be created.

Its water-repellent wooden base and an opportune choice of fabrics make it suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.

Boby XSmall

Boby, Joe Colombo’s injection moulded ABS plastic trolley storage unit is reintroduced in the new lime green colour, and offers a new set of three oak wooden shelves to level the upper section and to provide it with a touch of warmth. A new height is introduced as well: thus the single-section Boby is born, called BOBY XSmall. This is ideal as a bedside table, perfect for storing small objects.

Milan’s Salone Internazionale del Mobile is the leading venue at which you can exhibit your own new entries to the most qualified public. Since its first participation, B-LINE organises meetings with designers and press presentations for its most interesting products and now, in 2014, the formula is repeated with a day dedicated to the press.

On Wednesday 9 April from 11am to 2pm the designers of the two innovations introduced to the catalogue will be present at the B-line stand: authoritative names in international panorama, such as the architect Favata, leading light of the Joe Colombo Studio, and the Neuland Paster & Geldmacher duo.

This is not the usual press conference, but an occasion for directly experiencing the best of the company production, for exchanging a few words with key designers and for getting in touch the exhibitor.

Apart from a selection of products from the new B-LINE catalogue, at an exclusive preview, the Paduan company will exhibit the Ring container module, the Crossed pouf (Joe Colombo) and the Park stool (Neuland Paster & Geldmacher). As simple, direct and clean-cut as are the names chosen, so is the research on these products maniacal down to each detail.

The result is pure design, no frills, very B-LINE. Where? At Hall 16 Stand C37.

Ventura Lambrate 2014: announcing all exhibitors

Here it is – the full list of all 168 international exhibitors taking part in Ventura Lambrate 2014.

From 8 to 13 April, 76 exhibitions by emerging and established designers, academies, institutions and labelsfrom 39 countries will transform northeast Milan into the only fully curated district of Fuori Salone.

Designs, projects and other works will be on show in a massive 13,000 square metres of exhibition space, across 19 varied and authentic locations, including familiar locations and new venues. The new home base of this year’s event will be the Ventura Living Room, at Via Ventura 14. Until a few months ago, it was a working snow shovel factory, and an industrial feel still permeates the building.

The activities in the authentic printing factory at Via Dei Canzi 19 will be twice as big as last year’s: the group exhibition Ventura Hive will be staged in a genuine beehive structure, and in Ventura Team Up, collaborative projects will rule the day.

This celebrative fifth edition of Ventura Lambrate also launches the special project VENTURA X, in the city center of Milan. The first edition of Ventura X is in collaboration with designer Maarten Baas, BAAS IS IN TOWN, coproduced by the 5VIE district.

Dezeen promotion: registration is now open to attend this year’s Clerkenwell Design Week festival in central London from 20 to 22 May.

The fifth edition of the annual design gathering will celebrate work by the high concentration of architects and designers based in Clerkenwell, along with international names.

During the three-day festival, design brands with showrooms in the area including Arper and Vitra will open their doors to present new collections and relaunches.

Exhibitions of new products will take place in Clerkenwell’s historic buildings, including The Farmiloe Building and the crypt of St James Church.

Design collective Okay Studio and architecture practice Studio Weave will create interactive installations for the district.

The Campana Brothers, Ron Arad and Arik Levy are among speakers lined up for the Conversations at Clerkenwell seminar programme.

Celebrating its fifth edition this year, Clerkenwell Design Week (20-22 May 2014) will showcase the latest innovations by designers and manufacturers from the UK and around the world. Set against the historic backdrop of Clerkenwell, the three-day festival will be centred upon leading design showrooms in the neighbourhood, as well as four focused exhibitions including The Design Factory, Platform, Detail and Additions. Design brands such as Magis, Dare Studio and Ginger & Jagger are amongst those that will present their latest collections at the festival for the fifth year.

The festival will once again work with established and emerging names from both design and architecture, within its Clerkenwell Presents stream, offering an array of curated features and installations stationed across Clerkenwell. Also returning to the festival this year is the Fringe, where local creative practices – from architects to branding agencies and craft studios, will host workshops and displays open to the public.

This year, design collective Okay Studio and architecture practice Studio Weave have been appointed to create projects aiming to push the boundaries of design, in terms of concepts, process and material capabilities. Working with AHEC and Equitone by Marley Eternit respectively, these design teams will create one-off experiences that the public can interact with and enjoy. 

Year-on-year, Clerkenwell Design Week has successfully demonstrated its unrivalled quality as a global community supported by creativity and originality. This year, the festival will continue its strong relationships with the local design showrooms, studios and galleries, promoting their latest projects in architecture and design.

Following on from last year’s debut, Italian furniture manufacturer Arper will return to the festival, with a key celebration to mark its 25th anniversary. Meanwhile, the festival’s veteran Vitra will present a world-exclusive collective project – a relaunch of Ron Arad’s Tom Vac chair, 15 years after it was first launched. This iconic design will now be re-styled by selected designers and architects, and unveiled in Vitra’s showroom during the festival.

Keeping the festival fresh is essential, and this year’s Clerkenwell Design Week has introduced some exciting new names to the line-up. Sto Werkstatt, specialising in architectural cladding with a newly launched showroom and The Reclaimed Flooring Company who have created an inviting public space and workshop full of floors from all over the world. Other showrooms with big plans during the week include Brinton Carpets presenting, Deep Grid by Cristian Zuzunaga, and Scandinavian Business Seating, who will present the Red-dot Design winning Noor chair amongst other products.

The Design Factory, based at The Farmiloe Building, will play host to some of the best contemporary furniture, lighting and product design brands from UK and around the world; Case Furniture, Anglepoise, Benchmark, Decode, Another Country, Anglepoise, Henry Swanzy and Pinch are just a few of the names participating.

Clerkenwell Design Week will once again see a strong line-up of Italian brands participating this year. Leading lighting specialists Foscarini will feature an installation in the atrium and tunnel with other Italians Catellani & Smith also taking part. Newcomer to the design scene, as well as to the festival, Discipline will launch its brand new Last Side tables by Max Lamb to the UK market at the event. 

With its unique, architectural setting at The House of Detention, Platform will provide the perfect atmospheric backdrop for emerging young designers from around the world to exhibit their exciting new work including Johanna Tammasalu, Clivework, and James Tattersall. 

Celebrating fine quality and exquisite craftsmanship in the luxury sector, Detail at the Order of St John will bring together the best and most prestigious names in high-end interior design.

One of the most exciting billings at Detail this year will be an exclusive collaboration between .IT_All About Design, EDRA and The Campana Brothers, entitled From Art to Design. An exhibition of The Campana Brothers’ masterpieces as well as their designs for EDRA will be unveiled by the designers themselves at Detail on 20 May. The exhibition will explore how design and production processes render “a piece of art” – a successful, commercial product. Other stunning exhibitors at Detail include NICO, C&C Milano and Christopher Jenner for Drummonds.

New to Clerkenwell Design Week 2014, Additions will take over the Crypt on the Green at St James Church. It will be the main hub for a curated collection of small design items and home accessories, targeting retail buyers, interior designers and specifiers.

The newly launched Toghal brings heritage African designs into contemporary homewares, with a focus on textiles. Similarly, Urbanara offers high-quality home textiles and accessories using the finest natural materials.

Known for its architectural sculptures with a touch of playfulness, Chisel and Mouse will launch its new models at the show with London being a key inspiration. Meanwhile, Hend Krichen will bring her beautifully handcrafted vessels to the show, all of which are made using the rich artisanal skills and craftsmanship in Tunisia.

Clerkenwell and its creative community have earned a reputation for remaining at the centre of debate, pioneering activities and forward-thinking. Clerkenwell Design Week 2014 boasts an impressive line-up of speakers for its curated programme of seminars, Conversations at Clerkenwell inviting some of the best names in design and architecture to address and discuss the latest hot topics and industry issues.
