Alessandro Mendini revisits Proust chair for marble exhibition

Milan 2014: Alessandro Mendini recreated his iconic Proust chair in marble for an exhibition of products shown by Italian company Robot City at Ventura Lambrate in Milan.

Alessandro Mendini marble Proust chair

Made for the Italian marble company’s Solid Spaces show, the new iteration of the Proust chair is an attempt to create an object with a “hyper-realist” appearance by using marble to create an “almost surreal” effect, said Robot City.

Alessandro Mendini marble Proust chair

Originally created in 1978, the Poltrona di Proust chair became Mendini’s best-known work. It was the first in a series known as Redesigns, which brought together his academic theories on the importance of historical context for design and the significance of surface appearances in a fast-moving world.

Alessandro Mendini marble Proust chair

The Proust chair was developed after Mendini stumbled across a copy of a Neo-baroque chair while researching ideas for a fabric pattern for Cassina, influenced by the work of French writer Marcel Proust. The original version of the chair was covered in a multicoloured fabric, with a pattern carried through in its hand-painted frame, enlarging and reproducing an artwork by Pointillist artist Paul Signac.

It was originally a one-off design, but its popularity led Mendini to produce variations in limited numbers.

This marble version is one of four creations by different designers produced from a single 38.7-tonne block of white marble, excavated from a quarry owned by Robot City leader Gualtiero Vanelli.

The designs “give unexpected twists to the interchange between form, function, visual appearance, ergonomics, tradition and innovation”, said Robot City in a statement.

“Each of them enhanced the expressive and functional potential of this ancient, fascinating material, transforming it into advanced contemporary expressions according to their personal style and language.”

The other three projects in the exhibition included shelves by Paolo Ulian, an undulating glass-topped table by Stefano Boeri, and a table with three rabbit-shaped chairs by Stefano Giovannoni.

Swirling patterns top tables by Elisa Strozyk

Milan 2014: fluid compositions of coloured glaze cover the ceramic tops of these metal-framed tables by German designer Elisa Strozyk (+ slideshow).

Ceramic tables by Elisa Strozyk

Strozyk created the table tops by covering them with different liquid glazes, which were then mixed together by rotating each piece and blowing air across the surface.

Ceramic tables by Elisa Strozyk

This technique makes the glazes “pool and mix together”, creating “traces of fluid movement and smoke-like patterns, which are solidified in the heat of the kiln,” said Strozyk.

Ceramic tables by Elisa Strozyk

Shades of grey, blue, brown and white swirl and blend together on the table tops, which have a reflective glass-like finish to them created by the glaze.

Ceramic tables by Elisa Strozyk

“Glazing clay is one of the oldest techniques to decorate products of everyday life,” said the designer. “The process of firing transforms the liquid suspension of metal oxides and powdered minerals into various glass-like surface-finishes.”

Ceramic tables by Elisa Strozyk

Strozyk also carved criss-crossing lines into the glaze on the surface of one table, allowing the ceramic base to show through the rust-coloured shades decorating the top.

The round ceramic tops sit on simple metal frames, which come in copper and steel and are available in three different sizes.

The tables were shown as part of the Berlin Design Selection in the Ventura Lambrate district of Milan last week.

Thread patterns cover blown-glass tableware by Jun Murakoshi

Milan 2014: Japanese designer Jun Murakoshi’s tableware features patterned thread tops that create a geometric lattice for supporting flowers.

Bloom by Jun Murakoshi_dezeen_3

Tokyo-based Jun Murakoshi has created a collection of vases and fruit bowls called Bloom. The blown-glass tableware pieces feature small grooves on their edges, which allow thread to be criss-crossed over the tops in a geometric pattern.

Bloom by Jun Murakoshi_dezeen_6

“Blown glass has a feeling of both warmth and tension that looks like conflicting image,” said the designer. The glass was hand-blown by three young glass artists: Shunji Sasaki, Takeyoshi Mitsui and Emi Hirose in Toyama, Japan.

Bloom by Jun Murakoshi_dezeen_2

“The narrow lines create unlimited patterns, the transparency and exquisiteness that each materials possess make foil each other,” said the designer.

Bloom by Jun Murakoshi_dezeen_5

Flower stems can be threaded through the small gaps between the strings or rested in the larger hole in the centre of each piece.

Bloom by Jun Murakoshi_dezeen_4

Different coloured threads are used in combination to creating variations in the rings across the tops of the pieces, which are available in a range of sizes.

3D-woven fabric creates organically shaped lamps that glow in the dark

Milan 2014: Dutch studio Bernotat & Co created 3D-printed woven fabric lamps that emulate microscopic organisms to show in the Ventura Lambrate district in Milan this week (+ slideshow).

Radiolaria 3D-woven fabric lamps by Bernotat & Co

Anke Bernotat and Jan Jacob Borstlap of Bernotat & Co have created Radiolaria, a collection of 11 lamps made from a 3D-printed polyester textile normally used in technical applications where the material is hidden.

Radiolaria 3D-woven fabric lamps by Bernotat & Co

Thanks to the 3D-printed structure, the soft lamps do not require additional reinforcement. “When sewn together, the fabric creates its own character and shape,” Borstlap told Dezeen. “We let the fabric do the design work in a way.”

Radiolaria 3D-woven fabric lamps by Bernotat & Co

Influenced by the drawings of German biologist and artist Ernst Haeckel, the project is named Radiolaria after a type of microscopic biological organism that produces intricate mineral skeletons.

The designers created the patterns for the textile based on these organisms, whose skeletons are known for their natural geometric form and symmetry.

Radiolaria 3D-woven fabric lamps by Bernotat & Co

In a completely dark room, the lamps glow as the textile has been sown together with a glow in the dark material. “It creates a dreamy kind of atmosphere in your bedroom,” said the studio. “It also acts as a point of reference so you don’t bump into your bed.”

All lamps come with porcelain fittings and a silver-coloured cable and will be show from 8-13 April on via Ventura 6 in the Ventura Lambrate district in Milan.

David Derksen launches first jewellery range at Ventura Lambrate in Milan

Milan 2014: Dutch designer David Derksen is showing his collection of Moiré Jewellery at Ventura Lambrate in Milan this week (+ movie).

David Derksen launches first jewellery range at Ventura Lambrate in Milan

Each pendant is made from a piece of chemically etched brass, overlaid with a piece of etched stainless steel.

David Derksen launches first jewellery range at Ventura Lambrate in Milan

Moving either piece creates the Moiré effect. “If you have two layers of patterns, for example stripes or dots, and they rotate, you create a new pattern,” said Derksen.

David Derksen launches first jewellery range at Ventura Lambrate in Milan

There are five pendants in the collection. One features two discs, both perforated with circular dots.

David Derksen launches first jewellery range at Ventura Lambrate in Milan

When the front disc is rotated from the centre, a series of expanding and contracting rings appears. A similar design, when rotated from the top, creates a series of larger dots.

David Derksen launches first jewellery range at Ventura Lambrate in Milan

Two square discs pierced with square holes create a grid pattern. “When I started the project, I didn’t know what I wanted to make. I usually start my design process from a principle like gravity, or in this case the Moiré effect, and research it, and only afterwards do I think about how to apply it,” says Derksen.

David Derksen launches first jewellery range at Ventura Lambrate in Milan

“I had a couple of small samples on my desk and I was playing with them constantly. It was then that I thought, ‘We have to make something that you can play with.’ I decided that if we made a pendant, it would add something to your outfit, but you could also look at it and play with it yourself. We wanted to make playful objects.”

David Derksen launches first jewellery range at Ventura Lambrate in Milan

Moiré Jewellery is on show alongside Derksen’s Oscillation Plates and Table Architecture as part of the 010 – 020 Collective at the Prometeo Gallery, Via Ventura 3, 20134 Milan Tuesday 8 April – Saturday 12 April 2014.

Homedia TV by Robert Bronwasser

Milan 2013: Robert Bronwasser of Amsterdam design studio Smool presented a television set wrapped in fabric at Ventura Lambrate in Milan earlier this month.

Homedia TV by Robert Bronwasser

The Homedia TV by Robert Bronwasser has a curved fabric back and stands on brightly coloured legs.

Homedia TV by Robert Bronwasser

“While the number of channels in the past 20 years has quadrupled, the industrial design of the TV exterior did not evolve,” explains Bronwasser. “The average telly is a technical black shrine constructed of hard plastic. And the worst part is, its uninspiring form is dominating our interior.”

Homedia TV by Robert Bronwasser

The prototype TV was unveiled at Ventura Lambrate in Milan, where other designs on show included patterned rolling pins that make edible plates and a dining booth shaped like an old train compartment.

Altered Appliances by Piet Zwart Institute students

Milan 2013: patterned rolling pins that make edible plates and a meat grinder that squeezes out biodegradable bowls are among a set of kitchen products on show at Ventura Lambrate in Milan this week (+ movies).

Altered Appliances by Piet Zwart Institute students

Altered Appliances is a collection of four projects by students from Rotterdam’s Piet Zwart Institute, all of which introduce low-tech, hand-powered appliances and ideas to the kitchen.

Altered Appliances by Piet Zwart Institute students

Rollware is a set of laser-cut rolling pins designed by Joanne Choueiri, Giulia Cosenza and Povilas Raskevicius to produce edible plates and dishes from dough.

Altered Appliances by Piet Zwart Institute students

One set of four rolling pins is used to imprint patterns on the dough.

Above: Rollware movie

Another set cuts the dough into four different plate sizes before they are baked into tableware.

Altered Appliances by Piet Zwart Institute students

Extrudough is a collection of biodegradable tableware made with a meat grinder, which designers Bo Baalman and Kine Solberg describe as an “analogue, human-powered 3D printer”.

Altered Appliances by Piet Zwart Institute students

A soft dough is extruded through the meat grinder in thin tubes onto various shaped moulds and then dried at room temperature.

Altered Appliances by Piet Zwart Institute students

As well as being cheap to produce, the products have a shorter decomposing time than other temporary tableware such as paper plates.

Above: Extrudough movie

The Flip Food lunch box by Ilias Markolefas and Nathalia Martinez Saavedra is inspired by the brown paper bags often used for carrying lunch to school or work.

Altered Appliances by Piet Zwart Institute students

The designers used stencils to cut a brown paper surface into a flat template, which is then folded and assembled to form a geometric lunchbox with six compartments.

Altered Appliances by Piet Zwart Institute students

The printed patterns visible on the outside vary depending on the lunchbox’s rotation, so they can be used to indicate the type of food held inside.

Altered Appliances by Piet Zwart Institute students

Reusable plastic protective containers can also be inserted into the compartments to protect certain foods.

Above: Flipfood movie

Finally Maddalena Gioglio and Egle Tuleikyte created the CONEformation measuring set from mounds of salt poured out of a contraption holding various sizes of measuring funnels.

Altered Appliances by Piet Zwart Institute students

The salt mounds are hardened by spraying water onto them and then covered with a layer of runny clay. The salt is then removed to reveal a set of ceramic measuring vessels.

Altered Appliances by Piet Zwart Institute students

The four projects emerged from a studio led by Alex Suarez – whose installation in a salt factory we featured in 2010 – and Brian Peters at the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Other food designs we’ve featured include a collection of tableware made from baked dough and prototypes for 3D-printed hamburgers and pasta – see all projects involving food.

Above: CONEformation movie

Also at Ventura Lambrate this week are a seating booth inspired by an old train carriage and dining chairs with legs that flick out like ice skates, both designed by Tjep. – see all news about Ventura Lambrate.

Dezeen is in Milan covering the highlights of the design week – see our round-up from the Salone yesterday, browse all news from Milan or check out our interactive map of the week’s best talks, exhibitions and parties.

Photographs are by the designers.

Here’s some more information from Piet Zwart Institute:

Altered Appliances is an exhibition presenting projects that investigate the retooling of industrial low-tech appliances and gadgets to offer alternative design solutions and experiences for today’s kitchen. The exhibition is staged as a live demonstration presenting the process of making. The kitchen was the inspiration for the design projects. Historically, the kitchen as a domestic room grew from the need to house a variety of activities related to consumption. It is a story of the making of the modern home and its components, and on the shifting place and development of the most technological, equipment-laden and factory-like room of the home.

For the projects, the designers researched historical examples of appliances/apparatus, particularly low-tech, hand powered devices to become experts in a particular appliance, use and its effect. From this initial investigation, design parameters, fabrication techniques and material experimentations were developed to define the project, its application and explore new “altered” design opportunities for the kitchen.

The projects were made during a thematic design studio by design students in the Master of Interior Architecture & Retail Design (MIARD) program at the Piet Zwart Institute, Rotterdam, NL.

Rollware: Edible Dishware
Designers: Joanne Choueiri, Giulia Cosenza, Povilas Raskevicius

Rollware is a set of laser-cut rolling pins designed as a tool for the production of bread-based edible dishware, which are adorned with customised and useful patterns. The sustainable products merge traditional crafts, tableware production and cooking with digital technology.

Extrudough: Biodegradable Tableware
Designers: Bo Baalman, Kine Solberg

Extrudough is a collection of biodegradable tableware fabricated using an altered meat grinder that operates as an analogue, human powered 3D printer. The product line consists of five biodegradable containers, each with a unique pattern, colour and density.

Flip Food: Lunch Box
Designers: Ilias Markolefas, Nathalia Martinez Saavedra

Flip Food is a lunch box designed to store and carry food in a playful way. It is a self-standing rotating object with six compartments to store different types of food in each section. Inspired by the classic brown paper bag used by many to carry lunch to work or school.

CONEformation: A Measuring Set
Designers: Maddalena Gioglio, Egle Tuleikyte

CONEformation is a set of measuring cones for cooking, designed for mixing ingredients and serving food. The organic shapes of the cones are an unexpected yet a practical addition to the task of measuring for recipes in the kitchen.
