Ficelle chair by Osko and Deichmann for Ligne Roset

Cologne 2013: Berlin design studio Osko+Deichmann has launched a chair inspired by cooked spaghetti for French brand Ligne Roset.

Called Ficelle, meaning “string” in English, the chair is made from aluminium and is designed for both indoor and outdoor use. It comes in either black or white, along with an optional seat pad.

“Inspired by the smooth curves of cooked spaghetti, Ficelle is a unique poetic chair, nicely curved, fluid and light,” say the designers.

The lightweight tubular legs continue along the sides of the seat and up the side of the backrest before curling over and down to become the back legs. These distinctive profiles are linked by aluminium slats that have been evenly spaced along the seat and back of the chair.

Osko+Deichmann was founded in 2005 by Blasius Osko and Oliver Deichmann, who met while studying at the University of Fine Arts, Berlin. We’ve featured projects from Osko + Deichmann before, including the Straw stackable chairs for Blå Station, and a collection of tubular steel and pine furniture called Kink.

imm cologne took place from 14 to 20 January. Other products launched at the fair included an asymmetrical desk by Thibault Desombre for Ligne Roset and a DIY curtain kit by the Bouroullec brothers.

The desk is set on tapered oak legs that are cross-braced with steel framing. The desk comes in white, mustard, caramel or deep khaki.

“To successfully create an object one must outline what is essential in order to give it meaning,” says Thibault Desombre. “Litho is a poetic approach to the workspace.”

The graduated pattern is for Ligne Roset while the Cube design is for sub-brand Cinna.

Here’s some more information from the designers:

airvase (CUBE PATTERN)

This is a paper bowl that enfolds air. You can freely change its shape by moulding it.

The thin and lightweight paper gains tension and strength when pulled out.

Graduation and Cube Airvases by Torafu Architects for Ligne Roset

Created exclusively for Cinna, this special edition features a cube pattern formed from delicate line work, which can appear as either flat or three dimensional.

By expanding and compacting it in diverse ways, you can enjoy the ever-changing patterns.

Red on one side; blue, green and brown on the other, each of these main colours fade into a softer shade, gradually dissolving the geometric pattern.

You can choose from these colours for the inside or the outside surface of the airvase when you open it out.

Peye and Olive by Numéro 111 for Ligne Roset

Peye and Olive by Numéro 111 for Ligne Roset

Cologne 2012: these oversized lamps by French studio Numéro 111 for design brand Ligne Roset are illuminated by strips of LEDs around the back of the shade.

Their large hood-like shades diffuse the bright white light into a soft, wide beam.

The floor-standing Peye and table-top Olive are on show at imm cologne, which continues until 22 January. See all our stories about Cologne 2012 here.

Ligne Roset will also present their new collection at Maison & Objet in Paris from 20 to 24 January.

Here are some more details from Ligne Roset:

Two highly original lights (table lamp and floor lamp) which work on the principle of an oversized shade and illumination via strips of LED’s.

The Peye floor lamp is a reflection on the illuminated object as a generator of atmosphere and space. The system of LED’s gives off, almost mysteriously, an all-enveloping light that highlights the curves of the shade.

Oversized in inspiration, the Peye floor lamp, with its surprising dimensions, occupies a truly singular position in the domestic landscape. Its shade, which rests on a solid wood stem, is in composite material, with white interior and anthracite exterior. The LED’s are arranged all around the opening, in the rear of the shade.

The Olive table lamp has been devised as an illuminated chest, the design of which liberates itself from the formal constrains relating to the use of the bulb. The indirect light source reveals the generous shade of this singularly proportioned light, from which a soft, diffuse atmosphere is given off.

Numéro 111 is a trio of 2 designers and an architect from St Etienne, who have already made their mark with several projects in the fields of furniture design and interior design. They demand a global, dialogue-based approach, one which is not limited to a single hierarchy or discipline. Sensitive to both forms
and materials, Numéro 111 provokes and offers, through its creations, reflections on usage arising from the three team members’ cross-disciplinary standpoint on our daily lives.

Picnic by GamFratesi for Ligne Roset

Picnic by GamFratesi for Ligne Roset

Cologne 2012: French design brand Ligne Roset present their new collection in Cologne this week, including this little storage unit modelled on a traditional sewing box by Copenhagen designers GamFratesi.

Picnic by GamFratesi for Ligne Roset

Like the original, Picnic is raised on short legs with a handle looped over the top so it’s easy to move around. The box is made entirely from ash and stained in black.

This time last year GamFratesi launched their Rewrite desk for Ligne Roset – take a look at it here.

Picnic by GamFratesi for Ligne Rose

imm cologne continues until 22 January. Ligne Roset will also present the collection at Maison & Objet in Paris from 20 to 24 January.

Here are some more details from Ligne Roset:

Picnic

As with their Rewrite desk from 2011, the aesthetic astonishment arises from the unexpected meeting between the déjà-vu (‘already seen’) and a surprising new element: the storage section is evocative of the traditional sewing box or workbox, but when one turns away from the original function (the first priority is no longer necessarily to arrange one’s sewing kit) and updates the materials (black-stained ash replaces the more traditional oak or cherry), it transcends the more ordinary references to take on another dimension altogether, one which is both familiar and strange.

Picnic’s familiar, domestic character is underlined by the softly curved treatment of the storage chest as well as its support feet/handle which enables it to be moved about with ease.

GamFratesi is a design agency founded in Copenhagen in 2006 by Danish architect Stine Gam and Italian architect Enrico Fratesi. This Italian-Danish pairing embodies two talented European design traditions: the magical union between the design of the South and that of the North.

Telling Tales at Ligne Roset Westend

12th -25th September 2011

It is easy to lose sight of the link between an original concept and its commercial fruition. However each unique design of Ligne Roset’s enthralling new collection clamours to have its story told. Ligne Roset Westend are giving each item its own soapbox and letting the pieces speak for themselves.

Highlights include the Ploum sofa by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, described as a “ripe, voluptuous piece of fruit” and designed with comfort and flexibility at its core; Inga Sempé expands her Ruché upholstery range with the introduction of the Ruché bed; while Jean Nouvel joins forces once again with Ligne Roset to reissue the Saint James and Simple Bridge collections.

Ligne Roset Westend will also feature Dezeen’s pop up watch store from 10th – 25th September 2011 plus the Dezeen Book of Ideas will be on sale.

Entailles by Philippe Nigro for Ligne Roset

Here’s a bit of text from Ligne Roset:

ENTAILLES
“Viewing everyday life through the prism of objects which are surprising, yet sensible.”

Entailles by Philippe Nigro for Ligne Roset

Since 1999, Philippe Nigro has worked as a freelance designer; he is also an associate of the De Lucchi studio in Milan, where he works on numerous projects in the fields of product design, furniture and lighting design, interior architecture, promotional events and scenography.
Entailles by Philippe Nigro for Ligne Roset

To use the exact words of Philippe Nigro, these divans are ‘quasi-articulated’ by means of ‘functional notches’ which can accommodate small pedestal tables (for reading, writing, working, drinking, eating…).

These simple details confer on the divans a whole new aesthetic totally at odds with conventional images, whilst making it possible to obtain different seat depths and back heights. In order to fully respond to the original idea, it is possible to have the notches in a different colour and/or fabric. The end result is a ‘living’ divan, which seems to be in constant movement.
