Inga Sempé unveils Ruché armchair covered with a quilt for Ligne Roset

Paris designer Inga Sempé has added an armchair to her Ruché collection of furniture with quilted covers for French design brand Ligne Roset (+ slideshow).

Like Inga Sempé‘s earlier sofa and bed in the range, the Ruché armchair comprises a simple wooden frame with a loose padded cover draped over the top for comfort.

The piece has an asymmetric design, with one armrest the same height as the backrest and the other sitting just proud of the seat so that the user can drape their legs over the side.

“My idea was to offer different ways of sitting: normal, sideways, straight or slouchy,” Sempé told Dezeen. “As all edges are upholstered, there are no hard parts to avoid.”

“An armchair is almost as expensive as a sofa so I believe that it should be as comfortable as the main piece of the living room,” she continued. “Sometimes the armchair is more like the poor and less comfortable member of a range that includes a sofa.”

The design is available with the higher armrest positioned on the left or the right, and it’s intended to be used with an existing ottoman in the range.

The frame comes in natural or varnished beech, blue-grey or red, while the upholstery can be made up in a choice of Ligne Roset fabrics including velour, wool, thick cloth, microfibres or leather.

“I have to say that I was not behind the choice of the sofa’s colours,” she confided. “It often happens that the company does not want to involve the designer on the colours, and so one discovers it at the fair. Sometimes one could cry; sometimes one can be lucky.”

Ligne Roset will showcase the new piece at Maison & Objet trade show in Paris from 24 to 28 January 2014, where Sempé has chosen to present it in red and taupe.

“I have chosen this colour to contrast with the red structure, and to be rather happy and enlightening as it has to be presented at this dark time of the year in Europe,” she explained.

Balcon collection by Inga Sempé for Moustache

Product news: Paris designer Inga Sempé has extended her range of little round wall-mounted shelves and dishes for French brand Moustache.

In addition to the round shelf that Inga Sempé launched with Moustache last year, the Balcon collection now includes a deeper dish called Bénitier and one with a small mirror called Belvédère.

Sempé means them to be grouped in clusters, used for storing keys and checking makeup in the hall or for brushing teeth in the bathroom for example, or simply to display small ornaments and catch the light.

“Even if you don’t look at yourself in the mirror it always catches the light in a different way and when you move – when you cross a room or walk into a room – the reflection in the mirror changes also, so it’s always nice to have a mirror in the house even if it’s not to look at yourself,” she told Dezeen.

Each one can be screwed directly into the wall without any tools, she continued: “It’s so boring to go and get everything you need to drill a hole and then put something in the wall and find the right screw, so that’s why I wanted the object to be like a big screw itself that you directly put into the wall. I just wanted to do something light that you can put up without using a screwdriver.”

Previous products by Inga Sempé on Dezeen include a quilted sofa and bed for French brand Ligne Roset and lighting for Swedish brand Wästberg, launched at Stockholm Furniture Fair where Sempé was guest of honour in February.

Moustache launched in 2009 and has previously collaborated Swiss studio Big-Game and French designer Matali Crasset. The boutique brand is based near Sempé’s own studio. “Usually the companies that are involved with designers are big industries so they are in the other parts of France, but as Moustache don’t actually own any tools or any machines, it’s just a small company run by two guys in the same neighbourhood as mine,” she says, adding that it’s nice to be able to casually meet for lunch to discuss collaborations.

See all our stories about them here. Wästberg also launch new products by Ilse Crawford, Jonas Lindvall, Antoine Laver- dière and Claesson Koivisto Rune at the fair. More details to follow.

Here are some more details from Wästberg:

During Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair 2012 Wästberg will be launching a new range of lighting – LED pendant lighting – together with both old friends and new acquaintances.

Four years after the company launch, Wästberg are now expanding their range. This new collection of dimmable LED pendant lighting is developed in accordance with the company manifesto “Lamps for Neanderthal Man” in collaboration with Inga Sempé, Ilse Crawford, Jonas Lindvall, Antoine Laver- dière and Claesson Koivisto Rune.

A w103 suspension can be a single hanging shade or a combination of shades. They can be attached on a long rail for linear combinations or on smaller rails, where they can be joined together like Meccano to create polygons. The rail structure is thin enough to avoid the feeling of a heavy, hanging structure, and the lines are also softened by the round shapes of the shades. These exist in 7 very different tones – bright, soft, clear, dark – and can be arranged in any colour combination.

Two elements of the w103 range table lamp are used in the suspended lamps: the shade is identical and the hook of the clamp is moved to the top of the shade. This then becomes the assembly piece of all the various shade combinations.

Österlen by Inga Sempé for Gärsnäs

Osterlen by Inga Sempe for Garsnas

French designer Inga Sempé will present this ash chair and table for Swedish brand Gärsnäs at the Stockholm Furniture Fair in Sweden next week.

Osterlen by Inga Sempe for Garsnas

Called Österlen, the chair has slices cut out of the bent back and round legs to make a comfortable backrest, create neat joints with the square plywood seat and sharpen the line of the legs.

The text below is from Inga Sempé:

The name of the chair and table is Österlen, to support the fact that this collection is built in this historically strong part of south Sweden called Österlen and designed by an even more southern person. Working with Gärsnäs was a great opportunity for me to design wooden furniture, – a thing that is not possible to do in France where no wood factory would ask contemporary designer to work for them. I knew that it would be nicely built with the high knowledge of this historical company.

Osterlen by Inga Sempe for Garsnas

I wanted to mix the typical bent technics and high skills for fine assemblies of Gärsnäs. My aim was to create a simple, light and quiet – but not minimalist- chair and table, that would be nice in contemporay homes or in older ones, good for domestic purposes as well as for contracts.

Osterlen by Inga Sempe for Garsnas

The main characteristic of the chair is the U cuts made into the legs and bent parts. These cuts flatten the curves of the round legs so the light hits the pieces in a different way, which gives a soft rythm to the chair with shadowed or enlightened reliefs.

Osterlen by Inga Sempe for Garsnas

The bent back’s cuts are made to bring confort by increasing the angle with the seat. In the back support, those cuts allow it to be assembled with the the bent back part.

The front legs are cut and flattened to join the seat in a nice diagonal assembly. On their lower parts, the cuts sharpen the shape of the legs and give lightness to the Österlen chair and table and a kind of an elan.

Chair, h83 × w43 × d49, seat : h49 cm. Natural ash, veneer seat.
Table, h73 × 70 × 70. Natural ash.

RUCHÉ BED

Design Inga Sempé 2011

“What interests me is not luxury hotels but everyday life.” Inga Sempé

As with the Ruché settee, the Ruché bed is lifted from the ground by a simple, fine structure which supports a comfortable sleep platform.

The structure of Ruché is in solid beech, either stained or natural. Inga Sempé insisted on offering a version in natural beech: “natural wood is beautiful, qualitative, authentic; it is modern, and at the same time restful, for it is one of the rare natural elements one can have in one’s own home. The angles of the feet are worked ‘en congé’, which both refines them and protects the grain of the wood from shocks.

Ruché beds and tables by Inga Sempé for Ligne Roset

Upon its slim legs, the headboard and frame of the Ruché bed are dressed with distinctive quilting, a kind of boutis stitch of padding made using a cross-hatching of interrupted seams. Alternately flattened by the stitches then set free, the fabric ‘curls’ in places, giving rise both to its unique appearance and to its name, Ruché (a gathered or pleated fabric which serves as decoration on a piece of clothing). The highlights arising from these changes in level are very rich and their shading varies depending on the fabric used. A plain cloth is enriched with reliefs, a velour captures light from every angle…this quilting, simple and finely-worked, was the subject of much research and many trails, at the outset on my little sewing machine at my agency, then in the prototyping shop in Briord, on the seamstresses’ profession-grade machines, and finally there were tests on the programmed sewing robot on which the beds were to be produced.

For Ligne Roset, Ruché also brings together the unusual and the traditional. The unusual thing about this piece is its solid wood structure, and the great traditional element: the quilting, the very heart of its savoir-faire. Its rangy uprights and the undulations of its duvet combine to produce a harmonious union of rigorous straight lines and soft, welcoming curves.

Ruché beds and tables by Inga Sempé for Ligne Roset

Slender and fine, Ruché is nonetheless soft and welcoming. Its quilting was developed with a view to offering great comfort. One can lean back against the headboard in complete comfort. With high, buttoned headboards and raised sleep platforms fast becoming the desired features for luxury beds, the sheer originality and very personal approach of the Ruché bed brings complete renewal to a somewhat tired genre. That said, devotees of lower sleep platforms have not been forgotten.

In effect, the Ruché bed is offered in 2 widths (160 x 200 and 180 x 200) and 2 heights (headboard 110 or 85; bed frame 42 or 27 cm). Raised from the ground by its 4 legs, it makes vacuuming a breeze. Its frame accommodates all sorts of slatted bases and mattresses: thick mattresses are recommended. The Ruché bed may be complemented by bedside tables and a bench for the foot of the bed.
