AIGA Baltimore Lecture

Vancouver development gets Ferrari kitchens–and a communal convertible

pWhile a bevy of Italians recently traveled to Vancouver in a quest to retrieve metal–specifically gold, silver or bronze–Paolo Pininfarina, the CEO of the style house behind Ferrari, was there last week to present metal. Stainless steel, to be exact, and not in cars, but in people’s kitchens./p

p”My father used to say that one day Pininfarina could be more famous for its industrial design than for automobiles,” said the CEO, and in the ongoing quest to make that a reality, Pininfarina and Italian company Cucina Snaidero have designed the kitchens for Harbour Green Place, a luxury development in Vancouver./p

pUnfortunately photos of the HGP kitchen (above) are scarce, but as you can see from the examples below, Pininfarina’s no stranger to kitchen design: some of these designs date back to the early ’90s./p

pAs for the lucky residents of Harbour Green Place, not only do they get to cook in what are essentially Ferrari kitchens: A neat tie-in has given residents access to a communal car–a 2010 Ferrari California!/p

Core77 Forum Topic: Do engineers really “design” anything?

blockquoteDo engineers really “design” anything, or do they just take the idea and the sketches that a designer has come up with and make sure that the end product will work? Just wondering since most of the engineering programs out there are followed by design, such as mechanical engineering and design, civil engineering and design, etc./blockquote

Mike Stilkey’s Book Art

Im a big fan of Mike Stilkey’s Book Art.

“The book is dying,” artist Mike Stilkey reminds us. Therefore, in an effort to expose and enhance the beauty of the yellowed page and bounded form – which indeed, if “Ipad” and “Kindle”’s world domination strategies succeed, will one day become simply museum memorabilia, Mike paints within books, around books, on stacks of books (which he nobly calls “book sculptures”), and even on walls lined from floor to ceiling with books.

Go Down The Rabbit Hole In These Alice In Wonderland-Inspired Looks

imageI have to admit that Alice In Wonderland wasn’t my favorite childhood tale, but give it the Tim Burton treatment, put it in 3-D, and you know I’ll be waiting in line on March 5th. In the meantime, there are plenty of equally whimsical Wonderland-inspired accessories to keep me entertained. Tom Binns has teamed up with Disney Couture to design charm bracelets, earrings, and pendants featuring characters and motifs from the film – I’m loving this subtly inspired Queen of Hearts necklace with cascading resin heart charms. Swarovski’s Cheshire cat necklace is equal parts elegant and imaginative, and Stella McCartney’s exclusive necklace and bracelet are perfect for true Alice In Wonderland devotees. If the jewelry doesn’t do it for you, check out the dresses that Sue Wong has designed for Disney, inspired by characters from the film. See the slideshow for nine picks inspired by the surreal story!

How Many Billboards? Art In Stead

On the heels of Via, the latest project to hit Los Angeles’ public spaces is How Many Billboards?, an earnest strategy by MAK Center for Art and Architecture at the Schindler House bringing art into the everyday discourse. Until the end of March 2010, L.A. will see 21 artworks on billboards spread across areas in and around Hollywood, West Hollywood, Culver City, Westwood and Silverlake.

howmany-bill3.jpg howmany-bill2.jpg

In the works since 2006, for the project to happen MAK Center relied on prominent billboard companies to donate space and then commissioned artists like Michael Asher, Kenneth Anger and Renee Green to create thought-provoking images.

In a city where conflicts between the local government, residents and billboard companies are ongoing, “How Many Billboards?” co-curator and MAK Center Director Kimberli Meyer points out that the difference between public art such as murals and image heavy advertisements is not clearly defined. L.A. has gone through temporary bans keeping new billboards from going up, and outdoor artwork gets lumped in.

The show will be accompanied by guided bus tours, film and video screenings, as well as panel discussions and lectures. Check the website for more details, including a map of where each of the billboards is located and the artists’ statements about their work.
