Hot In The Hive: Dali Soft Watch In Gold
Posted in: UncategorizedFashion, however timeless or of-the-moment, is just another form of art, a way for the designer and wearer to express their ideas and individuality through clothing. Fashion and fine art go hand in hand in terms of inspiration and expression, so it’s a wonder that we haven’t seen more examples showcasing this intersection of creativity. Sure, you can get tees and caps screen-printed with “Starry Night,” but it’s not often that you see a fine art piece turned into a wearable and stylish fashion piece. The Dali Soft Watch does just that. Salvador Dali is arguably the most well-known master of surrealism and his 1952 painting “The Disintegration Of The Persistence Of Memory” s one of the most popular and recognizable. The perfect fashion piece to portray this image? Well, a watch of course! The watch looks like a 3-D version of one of Dali’s melting clocks and comes in either silver or gold with a leather strap. It comes in a decorative Dali box and is the perfect timepiece for the art lover in your life! Price: $120.00 |

Buffalo, NY Decided to Fight Back Against Media Portrayal of Buffalo, NY
Posted in: UncategorizedThe good people of Buffalo, New York are once again slightly miffed about media coverage of their city. You’ll remember last year when NY Times‘ critic Nicolai Ouroussoff traveled there to talk in glowing terms all about their architecture. Then the issue was (rightly) raised that he’d completely forgotten about the contributions of Buffalo’s own Louise Bethune, the first American woman to set up a professional architecture office and the first female fellow of the American Institute of Architects. Now they have collectively come to rally against a recent piece in USA Today that also talks about how great Buffalo’s architecture is, but also how the city is crumbling and how it’s incredibly cold there (that’s the part they’re upset about). On their local news, they talk about the decision to fight back (check out the clip after the jump), for some reason showing all the television and movie productions being shot in the area right now as some sort of worthiness gauge. The plan also includes sending out copies of Mark Donnelly‘s photography book Frozen Assets to show how great the city is, even when it’s buried under 20 feet of snow.

Coquette Reveals A Lighted Wedding Dress!
Posted in: UncategorizedMy friend Alison of Switch made this lighted wedding dress for her friend Julia’s beachy wedding in Hawaii. I love how this feels like a true wedding dress of the future. After all, we are just weeks away from 2010, no? Alison writes: “It was decided that the dress should honor the metallic look but with a vintage inspired style. To do this, I focused on creating a soft and glowing design that played with the Victorian shape of the dress. The lighting design was intended to be simple with warm and cool whites.” She even made a Luminex shawl for Julia to wear for the beach bonfire! Click over to the Coquette blog for more details on the innovative glowing gown! |

Vigilante road unclutterers
Posted in: UncategorizedEvery Sunday morning there is a man in his 60s or 70s with a long white beard and even longer hair cleaning the underpass of the highway near my house. He has a large broom, a tiny dustpan, numerous garbage bags, and what I’ve decided is a battery-powered vacuum in a shopping cart from Trader Joe’s. I don’t know if he is there because he is an adopt-a-highway sponsor, is cleaning it as part of a court-mandated community service obligation, or if he has a compulsion of some kind. It’s an extremely dangerous area of road, so I’ve never stopped to ask him why he is there. And, I’ve never seen him around town other than when he’s cleaning up the underpass.
I mention this public-space unclutterer because apparently he’s not the only one randomly cleaning up the streets in my area. The Washington Post reported last week that there are more vigilante unclutterers out there cleaning up Virginia roadways. From Signs of a roadside crusade in Fairfax“:
Some people spend their Saturday mornings cruising yard sales or running errands. Juli Verrier spends hers ripping down signs.
Outraged over the bumper crop of ads that spring up along Fairfax County roads, Verrier dodges traffic and angry merchants in a one-woman fight against clutter, filling her car’s trunk to overflowing with signs hawking everything from sushi bars to massages.
It’s illegal to post signs along roadways in Virginia, and each sign is worthy of a $100 fine. The article explains, however, that because of budget cuts the state Department of Transportation (VDOT) no longer patrols for sign violations. In fact, “VDOT is so broke that if not for volunteers, no one would be cleaning up the signs.”
Budget cuts have also reduced mowing funds, which this past summer led one county supervisor to start mowing the shaggiest of medians with his push mower.
Have you ever felt compelled to become a vigilante road unclutterer? I’ll admit, I don’t have any desire to risk my safety and pull up signs. I also don’t own a lawn mower to care for nearby medians. It’s an interesting uncluttering hobby, though. Sound off with your opinions about these volunteers in the comments.
