Cold War military installations made from refrigerator parts

articlex-comp.jpg

Oakland art gallery Johansson Projects presents Article X, “where functional objects are removed from their usual vocabularies and placed in zones of ambiguity, absurdity, and anxiety.” The show will feature work by two artists, David Trautrimas and Kristina Lewis.

Trautrimas imagines Cold War military installations through the digital re-imaging of discarded parts from household appliances like coffee pots, electric razors, oil cans and waffle irons. According to Johannson Projects, these “structures are the hypothesized origins of appliances that eventually trickled down to the public as common household goods that came to define the zeitgeist of the era.” We’re wondering what the flip side might be—something optimistic, utopic, Ant Farm-esque made from biodegradable packaging and strange gourds?

Lewis works directly (and less polemically) with objects to “free them of their allegiance to the human agenda and give [them] a space to play.” For example, below, a building rebels through its light switch:

LimeLife Shows The Way To Shop Smart For Beauty

imageI love giving beauty-related gifts to friends and family during the holidays — not only do I feel less guilty about my own spontaneous purchases, but I also have an opportunity to work my present-getting magic. Let’s go shopping! I love the holidays! Here are a few of my beauty-shopping attack methods:
*Plan ahead. I get on the Sephora website and make a list of what I want to try in person, and what I have questions about. I can’t help it– I get distracted by the shiny-shiny beauty counter.

*Save some gifts for a later purchase. Do you run around to visit relatives after the holidays? I sometimes do, and that means I head into stores on the 26th and load up on discounted beauty gift packs from affordable places like Burlington Coat Factory and TJ Maxx. Modified Subaru is an awesome way to get around in the snow

The East Coast of the United States was hit by a record amount of snowfall over the weekend, and Core77’s home base of New York City ground to a halt. Roughly 1,200 area flights were canceled, and Gotham’s unskilled taxi drivers crawled and swerved like they’d never seen snow before. If only, during the winter months, we could get rid of the Crown Vic taxis and replace them with these:

(That’s a one-off Subaru Impreza WRX “Trax” STI, driven by rally car champ Ken Block.)

Stored in 60 seconds: Trailer turns into a storage shed

0twostow.jpg

The Tow-n-Stow is a neat idea, and probably most useful if you live in the wilderness and routinely need to haul heavy stuff back to base and then store it (like firewood): It’s a watertight container that holds 1,000 pounds, and tips upright to make a lockable outdoor storage unit. Transforming the 100% recyclable unit takes, the company claims, about a minute.

Music in the key of iPhone

Good gosh. YouTuber OuiCestBon plays the Yann Tiersen tune from Amelie on a piano made from six iPhones. Why? To draw attention to the El Desafio Foundation (The Challenge Foundation), a charity that operates between Holland and Argentina, striving to better the lives of children in the latter country.

The first 25 seconds are set-up, but you can’t help but be impressed once the unnamed pianist starts tickling the ivories/pixels.

More Santa sleigh re-designs, this time by auto houses

Vauxhall

Looks like GE’s not the only one getting in on the Santa sleigh re-design biz; Car Magazine held a week’s worth of sleigh designs penned by world-class car designers like Land Rover, Aston Martin, Jaguar, Audi, and Vauxhall. Hit any of the links beneath the photos to read the descriptions and proposed technologies, which run from particle accelerators to CRS (Chimney Recognition Software).

Hot In The Hive: Decorative 30 Gallon Oak Wine Barrel

imageMost everybody likes a good bottle of wine, but there are certain people out there who live and breathe wine. These are the people that not only have a small collection of reds and whites at their disposal near the dinner table, but probably also have a cellar of some sort that houses the best bottles. Besides multiple bottles of the good stuff, their house probably also has framed pictures of wine and wine accessories around the kitchen, a monthly subscription to Wine 4 Life, and multiple coffee (wine?) table books on the subject scattered about. Maybe it’s your father or father-in-law, a dear friend, or your loving husband who’s the wine aficionado and you’d like to get them something they’ll really like that pertains to their hobby. One problem. You have no idea about anything to do with wine except that it’s good with dinner. What year Chateau Ste. Michelle was supposed to be good? Is the 2007 Merlot better than the Cabernet? Forget all the worrying and get them something that will make their wine collection and cellar even better, without you having to research the history of the grape. This 30-gallon oak wine barrel not only decorates and adds authentic appeal to any room, but it can double as a table top or be used as a table base. Versatile and perfect for the wine-lover in your life!

Price: $329.00, but many wineries have (empty) barrels for sale that go for under $100, and if you’re not a fan of the unfinished look, you’re a DIY project away from a new table!
Who Found It: idabone was first to add the Decorative 30-Gallon Oak Wine Barrel to the Hive.
