Rory Sutherland at TED

Part 1

IPA President and Vice-Chairman of Ogilvy Group UK Rory Sutherland gave a talk at renowned ideas conference TED in Oxford earlier this year, which has now been posted online.

In his witty talk, titled Life Lessons From An Ad Man, Sutherland comes up with a unique way of improving the Eurostar journey, explains the concept of ‘placebo education’ and notes how Frederick The Great of Prussia rebranded the potato as an exclusive object, while making a general point about how many of life’s problems could be solved by “tinkering with perception”.

Unitasker Wednesday: Chef’n Garlic Zoom

All Unitasker Wednesday posts are jokes — we don’t want you to buy these items, we want you to laugh at their ridiculousness. Enjoy!

I want to start with the obvious, and that is the name of this product. Most multi-tasking or high-utility kitchen products have simple names that begin with lowercase letters: skillet, oven, knife, plate. A good sign that something might be a unitasker is when its name is cutesy and trademarked: JerkyXpress, Plater Grater, Nostalgia Cotton Candy Maker. By all accounts, the Chef’n Garlic Zoom is destined for unitasker greatness based on the fact that it includes a random apostrophe and the word zoom:

It looks innocent enough, yes? It’s not very large and wouldn’t clutter up your kitchen too much. And, it probably even works (although the reviews on Amazon aren’t what I would call “glowing”). However, I fail to see how it is better than a KNIFE, which you probably already own. Here’s how you use it:

  1. Peel skin off garlic clove. (Which, I think most people do with a knife.)
  2. Open Chef’n Garlic Zoom and put in your clove of garlic.
  3. Close up the device and roll it along the counter.
  4. Open it.
  5. Remove the center blade.
  6. Use your finger or a small spoon to scoop out the garlic. (Anyone else guessing that getting the garlic out is a bit messy?)

How is this easier than chopping up garlic with a knife? When you use a knife, all you do is peel the garlic and chop it up. You can even rinse off the knife and use it on a carrot! or broccoli! or fish! I almost feel sorry for the little Chef’n Garlic Zoom. Almost. Thanks to reader Gabe for finding us this adorable unitasker.

Jean Paul Gaultier Is Next Up For Target!

imageJean Paul Gaultier is doing a Target collection, reports The Cut via WWD. The over-the-top designer’s collection will be available at more than 250 Target stores across the country and Target.com on March 7 through April 11. Following Alexander McQueen and Anna Sui, Gaultier is the third established designer to do a collection for the mass retailer under the Designer Collaboration series. His chosen muse? The American woman, “celebrating the forces of style both past and present in American pop culture,” a Target spokesperson says. I remember being thrilled by Gaultier’s risque designs as a young girl (Madonna’s cone-bra corset comes to mind). My mother’s dislike of his iconic female/male perfume bottles only made me want them more; both still sit prominently displayed in my glass bathroom cabinet. This Frenchman holds a special place in my heart so I look forward to what he’ll bring to Target audiences.

Hot In The Hive: Sephora Blockbuster Palette

imageIt might be a little early to start shopping for Christmas gifts (unless you’re an overachiever… or just really smart and on top of things), but just in case you want to cross me off your list ahead of time, here’s what you can get me! Think of the Sephora Blockbuster Palette as the ultimate fix for makeup addicts. Like a shiny new espresso machine for caffeine junkies, or Willy Wonka’s chocolate river to an insatiable chocoholic, this thing is the mother lode of cosmetics combo sets. With more than 84 eyeshadows, 60 lip glosses, and a ridiculously impressive array of blushes, eyeliners, and all the necessary applicators, you’ll be more than set to achieve the alleged 60,000 different looks possible. And the added bonus? Everything folds and packs neatly into its compact mirrored case. Cue the “hallelujah” chorus!

Price: $48
Who Found It: xgalexy was the first to add the Sephora Blockbuster Palette to the Hive.

Upcycled Olympic Medals?

Leave it up to the Canadians. The 2010 Winter Olympics to be held in Vancouver will be honoring Olympic athletes with upcycled medals made out of recycled circuit boards. The medals are designed by Canadian artists Corrine Hunt and Omer Arbel and are laser etched onto an undulating shape that mirrors the landscape of the host city. For more on the making of the these medals go here.

Feather Report: New iPhone App To Help You Get Dressed!

imageFashion + Weather = Feather. My friend Melisa of Feather Report and The Lil Bee has just launched the Feather Report iPhone app. Look to it as your own portable, personal style consultant. You’ll never have to look out the window and wonder, “What am I gonna wear today?” It’s rainy today in SF and this is the outfit that was picked out for me. I love it! What’s great is that each of the items listed in the outfit for today are linked so you can purchase them directly from your iPhone. If I like today’s outfit, I can easily save it to my favorites with a press of a button. I love to get exposed to new pieces of clothing and how to put them all together. Using a GPS weather tracker, Feather Report serves up a new outfit to your iPhone each day, based on your specific location. Outfits are categorized based on body types, occasions, and weather patterns. You can also search for outfits based on your individual needs such as Date Night, Out with the Girls, etc. If you’re traveling, get weather forecasts for your upcoming trips. Sounds cool? Get a chance to win the Feather iPhone app for free by clicking over to our friends at Coquette!

Mrs. Eaves meet Mr. Eaves

Mrs. Eaves, designed by Zuzana Licko in 1996 as a Baskerville reinterpretation has finally found a companian in Mr. Eaves.

Mr Eaves was based on the proportions of Mrs Eaves, but Licko took some liberty with its design. One of the main concerns was to avoid creating a typeface that looked like it simply had its serifs cut off. And while it matches Mrs Eaves in weight, color, and armature, Mr Eaves stands as its own typeface with many unique characteristics.

Freestyle Magazine

freestyle-mag-1.jpg

I discovered the unusually frisbee-shaped Freestyle Magazine in my favorite bookshop, Athenaeum Boekhandel, on a recent trip to Amsterdam. Focused on fashion, design, art, architecture, lifestyle and frisbees, Berlin-based fashion photographer Jason McGlade created Freestyle for those who share his uninhibited spirit.

freestyle-7.jpg

In a world of rectangular publications, not only does Freestyle Magazine’s circular shape set it apart, but so does its package design. A high quality, limited edition Wham-O sports disc Frisbee designed by a selected artist houses each issue. The premiere issue, a series of copies each sold inside a Frisbee designed by Eley Kishimoto, comes in five colorways. Both the magazines and Frisbees make collector’s items for the design-savvy worldwide.
