David Chipperfields Photo Phobia Leads to Interesting Anti-Photography Debates

1027libshoot.jpg

Try as we might, we just can’t escape Iowa, can we? We found this bit of interesting over on Jessamyn West‘s Librarian.net blog, which lead us to learn that David Chipperfield is particularly camera shy. Story goes is that West was visiting the Des Moines Public Library, a beautiful structure designed by the starchitect, and decided to take a few photos. She was stopped almost immediately by a library employee and later, upon contacting the branch by email, was told the policy was put in place to not allow photographs of the building without permission, with this bit of explanation: that Chipperfield is “very sensitive to photos being taken and the possibility of them being used for commercial purposes.” While we understand the starchitect’s and the library’s concerns, and who isn’t familiar with the crack down on photography inside and out of buildings anymore, this particular policy seems more than a little uncomfortable, given that it’s a public structure paid for by taxpayer dollars, and unlike say a federal courthouse, is intended to be entirely open arms and overtly welcoming. And in any instance of these anti-photography policies, shouldn’t there be some sort of enforcement-only-when-needed plan in place when it comes to discerning between the person with the small point-and-shoot taking a few quick snaps and the other lugging in some big Hasselblad setup? But we digress. There are a lot more interesting thoughts to read over on Archinect‘s post about it and in the Flickr comments on the one photo West managed to grab before she was shut down.

Medical device design: NovoTwist wins Good Design Award

0flexpen1.jpg

Danish medical device company Novo Nordisk has won a Good Design Award for their FlexPen insulin delivery device, which incorporates a needle with a twist–literally: The NovoTwist removeable needle twist-snaps on and off, making it easy for the elderly to swap them out.

“Conventional screw thread needles can be difficult to attach and detach, especially for the elderly, as limited manual dexterity and hand strength make the circular motion of screw attachment/detachment challenging,” commented the judges. “NovoTwist has solved this problem with a simple functional design with a push-and-twist needle attachment/detachment system.”

Hot In The Hive: Michael Kors Very Hollywood Solid Perfume Cocktail Ring

imageOk, I can’t be the only person who’s ecstatic about the return of Michael Kors as a judge on Project Runway, right? I didn’t know I could miss his clever and biting quips (“slutty slutty slutty” and “insane crotch” come to mind) more than Heidi Klum misses being pregnant. Michael Kors has the American sportswear market cornered with his sophisticated yet effortlessly styled clothing. So I wasn’t surprised when browsing through Sephora that he’s lent his name to various fragrances too. Of course, Michael understands the value of having something with multiple functions. His Very Hollywood Solid Perfume Cocktail Ring definitely fits the bill because it may look like a showstopping cocktail ring, but if you slide the gem over, it’s also a solid perfume. The Very Hollywood perfume has notes of sparkling mandarin, gardenia, and vetiver for a fresh yet distinctive scent. Go ahead, dab some on at your pulse points and get ready to steal the show!

Price: $40

Excerpt: Eight strategies to stop procrastinating

The following is an excerpt from my book Unclutter Your Life in One Week, which comes out next week on November 3. If you have pre-ordered the book, THANK YOU! and also don’t forget to sign up to receive the special PDF bonus worksheets. And, to let you know, the electronic Kindle version is now available for pre-order (still no word on the other e-book formats).

Now, on with the excerpt from the Thursday chapter, “Working While at Work” section of the book:

“… try these strategies for improving your productivity when you don’t really want to work:

  • Similar to what you might do when exercising, play music with a fast rhythm.
  • If you drink caffeine, consume it in small, frequent amounts instead of just one large cup at the beginning of the day.
  • Set time-specific goals in two-, five-, or ten-minute increments. Identify what you want to accomplish in a very short amount of time, and then set a timer and go for it.
  • Isolate yourself. Remove the desire to procrastinate by not having any other options but to work.
  • Acknowledge that you’re procrastinating. Often, just realizing that you’re putting something off is enough to get you working.
  • Challenge a colleague to see who can get the most work done in a set time period.
  • Ask someone to help you stay accountable. There are professional motivators who will call you once a day to see how you’re doing, but a trusted and willing friend or coworker can do the same thing for free.
  • If the task doesn’t require much though, listen to an audiobook while you work. Agree to only listen to the book when you’re working on the project you don’t want to do. This way, you’ll be interested in hearing more of the story each time you take on the undesirable task.”
