Phillippe Starcks Mega-Yacht Finally Hits the High Seas

0730starckboat.jpg

If you read this blog with any regularity, you know that whenever we mention Philippe Starck, particularly when he’s talking about making everything sustainable, we like to poke at him a bit for designing a mega-yacht (read: a big yacht). To be fair, an eco-friendly mega-yacht, but we still fail to see how building a new multi-million dollar ship for a handful of extremely wealthy people is at all green. Now we have finally laid our eyes on Starck’s massive ship, as designboom has the first real photos of the yacht, as well as some additional info about it. We think it looks mighty well, somewhere between a normal ship and a semi-submerged submarine, and certainly wouldn’t turn down the keys if someone were to offer it to us, but still, we’re sticking to Starck’s own lines when he said, upon unveiling the news that he was designing said boat: “A luxury yacht is the most stupid thing invented in the world, in theory nobody needs that. It is a display of power and money.” Indeed.

Blofield Inflatable Chesterfield Furniture

by Laura Neilson

Blofield1.jpg

Blofield‘s inflatable chairs one up other blow-up options, introducing the concept of permanent air-filled furniture with classic styling.

After two years of working on research and development, Dutch designer Jeroen van de Kant, created one-, two- and three-seat inflatable chairs, modeled after Chesterfield-style seats and sofas. These handsome, puffy seats, which debuted at various international design fairs last year, feature vinyl bottoms and earned an enthusiastic following for their smart and modern twist on a familiar piece of furniture design.

Available in white, gray and green, each Blofield comes with a repair kit and an electric pump that inflates the chairs in under five minutes.

Due to the varying voltage systems, the chairs are currently unavailable for purchase in the U.S., however the Netherlands-based company is working on an inflatable pump specific for North American distribution. Buy the European versions through Blofield’s site, starting at €380.

Tough calls and hard decisions

When you work to clear the clutter from a space, I recommend that you sort objects into three piles: keep, purge, and other. The keep pile is filled with things you plan to keep, the purge pile is filled with things you wish to get rid of (trash, recycle, donate to charity), and the other pile is for things that require additional action (return to library, take to tailor to be hemmed, take to cobbler to be resoled, etc.). Unfortunately, there is usually a fourth category of items — the tough calls.

I’m of the opinion that it’s okay to keep tough calls, at least in the short term. When it comes time to put things back to their permanent homes (a place for everything, and everything in its place), you’ll know if you have space to store the item. If you don’t have space, get rid of the object. If you have space, put the object in a box and seal up the box with tape. Write the date on the top of the box and what you would do with the item if you got rid of it (sell on Craigslist, give to Aunt Lynda). At some point in the future, six months is usually a good length of time, if you haven’t opened the box just do whatever the directions on the box tell you to do. Except for items you plan to sell, you don’t even need to open up the box and look at the item before getting rid of it.

As far as tough calls are concerned, I’ve found that they reduce in number the more uncluttering you do. The temporary holding box is a reassuring safety net when you’re first getting your footing. I think it’s an excellent way to help others ease into uncluttering, too.

Make Your Intimates Go Incognito With Our 7 Favorite Convertible Bras!

imageExcluding those gals who have the unique ability (and required lack of shame) to go around commando on top, we’ve all found ourselves in the dilemma of finding a super-cute top or dress… but no bra to wear with it. Since I require some serious support when it comes to my undergarments, I’ve tried just about anything to make do with what I’ve got at the last possible minute — sewing kits, safety pins (why did it take them so long to invent the Brabuddy?), tucking straps into my armpits, etc. — but now that I’m a little older, I’ve learned that the easiest solution is to just shop wiser! Why spend money on a separate strapless bra when you could buy the ultimate convertible bra that’s both strapless, strapped, racerback, and halter all in one? And instead of resorting to emergency double-stick tape for those how-low-can-you-go necklines, why not just buy a convertible plunge bra that can serve as your go-to undergarment for any cleavage-baring little number? Convertibility doesn’t always equal convenience, however, as some crazily-shaped bras can sacrifice much-needed comfort and support, so I’ve compiled some of my favorites to weed out the good from the gimmicky! Check the slideshow for the best bra finds that will have you appear smooth and strapless in any outfit!

Fiercely ’80s Eye Makeup Straight Off The Marc Jacobs Runway!

imageIt was hard to ignore the ’80s makeup that dominated the runways for Fall. Marc Jacobs sent his girls down the runway with a fierce-looking club kid eye makeup look and Versace and Zac Posen both featured “Debbie Harry meets Jerry Hall”-inspired makeup. Marc Jacobs wanted the eyes to take center stage — so much so that he asked makeup artist Francois Nars to create 65 different makeup looks on the 65 models! What makes this eye makeup look different than just a normal smokey or dark eye? Unlike a heavy-lined eye, these ’80s-inspired looks take it a step further, with the shadow up to the crease and often all the way up to the eyebrow, creating a large oval around the eye. To cop the look yourself, accentuate your usual blacks and browns with cobalt blues, deep greens, bright purples, reds, fuchsias, and even some glitter (not too much — we’re not going for Boy George here). An easy way to get a more street-appropriate version of the look is to shade the eye all over with a sheer eyeshadow of peach, gold, or soft blue. Lightly rim the entire eye with a black eyeliner (no need to be perfect since you will be covering and blending with shadow), then use a darker highly-pigmented shade like an espresso or navy on the lower lid and blend towards the crease and outer corner. Check out the slideshow for some great products to get the look, and click “See Video” to watch Marc Jacobs’ makeup master Francois create the looks for the Fall ’09 show.

as a member of the ephemera society, i run across all kinds of interesting people. one such character is gejus van diggele. i have not made his acquaintance but i certainly believe he is a remarkable man with a specific interest. he has accumulated thousands of antique playing cards, each with the most beautiful graphics you have ever seen. what mr. diggele finds interesting, however, is the secondary use of playing cards. if i could only be…

Quote of Note | Ada Louise Huxtable

(Allan Grant).jpg“He combined a romantic 19th-century taste (he was, after all, born in 1867, just after the Civil War) for pictures on easels, hand-crafted containers of wild flowers and autumn leaves, Japanese prints, and strategically placed copies of the “Victory of Samothrace” with a pioneering vision of 20th-century social change.”
