The Meanest Watch on the Block

The Watch Horrors collection explores the darker side of elegance in a series of menacing looking timepieces. The focal point of the design is a ninja-star-like face complimented by complex cog shapes and exposed hardware that give it an edgy, industrial feel.

Pebble by KiBiSi at Dezeen Watch Store

Dezeen Watch Store: Pebble is the first watch by Danish design studio KiBiSi and is now available in four colours at Dezeen Watch Store.

Pebble designed by KiBiSi

Pebble is the result of a collaboration between Jacob Juul of Danish watch brand Bulbul and KiBiSi. The design includes a distinctive asymmetric face that was inspired by the smooth contours of the pebbles found on Scandinavian beaches.

Pebble designed by KiBiSi

“Jacob asked us ‘why are all watches round or square?’, KiBiSi’s head of design Lars Larsen told Dezeen, “and we decided to use this question as the starting point for the design.”

He continued: “When you look at the watch the asymmetry is not the first thing that catches your eye. The shape feels familiar and not radical – it’s ‘off’ in a balanced and delicate aesthetic way.”

Pebble designed by KiBiSi

The timepiece, almost two years in the making, places emphasis on high quality craftsmanship and includes a double-sided Italian leather strap. “We wanted to make the product the brand and focus more on the piece” Lars said. “The watch becomes a piece of contemporary jewellery.”

The dial is complemented by a minimal face and a unique injection-moulded silicone loop. “The loop functions as understated brand information but remains eye-catching,” Lars added. “A traditional leather loop tends to soften and break over time; this solution is long lasting and durable.”

Other features include a stainless-steel case topped with scratch resistant sapphire glass and a Ronda Swiss-made movement with a ten-year battery life.

Entrepreneur Jacob Juul launched Bulbul in Copenhagen this year. The brand name can be translated as nightingale in the Middle East and India, but can also refer to a small songbird with a distinctive mohawk.

Pebble is available at Dezeen Watch Store in four variations for £290.

Dezeen Watch Store: the newest addition to our collection is the Stop2Go watch by Mondaine, a classic timepiece inspired by Swiss railway clocks.

Stop2Go by Mondaine at Dezeen Watch Store

Stop2Go incorporates a unique time keeping feature that is inspired by the mechanism of Swiss railway clocks. The sweeping red second hand completes a full revolution in 58 seconds, then waits for two seconds at the 12 o’clock position, allowing the minute hand to move on before the next rotation starts.

Stop2Go by Mondaine at Dezeen Watch Store

The timepiece includes a 41mm stainless steel case that fixes to the leather strap with steel braces. The easy-to-read, minimal design places emphasis on the markings and the distinctive red hand, which resembles a railway guard’s signalling disc.

Stop2Go by Mondaine at Dezeen Watch Store

The original Swiss Railway Clock was designed over 70 years ago by Zurich-born engineer Hans Hilfiker and has become a Swiss design classic, included in twentieth century design collections at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Design Museum in London.

Mondaine has been producing watches inspired by the original design since the mid-1980s when the brand was granted an official license from the Federal Swiss Railway.

When designing the watch, Morrison used Irving Penn’s iconic 1994 photographs of Miyake’s collection as a starting point. “I visited the 21-21 Design Site Exhibition of Penn’s photos for Miyake and was overwhelmed by how Penn managed to capture the spirit of Miyake’s clothes in his photos,” said Morrison. “I decided to do my best to capture some of that spirit for this new watch.”

Mutewatch atDezeen Watch Store

Mutewatch - Indigo Blue

Dezeen Watch Store: the popular touch-screen Mutewatch is now available in five new colours – and Dezeen Watch Store is one of the first retailers to stock them all.

Mutewatch - Nova Purple

Mutewatch was conceived when company founder Mai-Li Hammargren was living with a boyfriend who worked late night shifts. Just as he was getting to sleep in the early morning, her alarm would go off and wake him up. The solution? A silent alarm clock, worn around the wrist.

Mutewatch - Ivy Green

The design was inspired by the founders’ need for a personal wake-up alarm and the minimal-meets-retro aesthetic takes cues from Rubik’s Cube and classic Swedish design.

Mutewatch - Charcoal Grey

“We’re passionate about developing products for people who love simplicity and beautiful design,” said Mutewatch brand manager and partner Livia Moore. “We focus on the user experience, creating refined and useful tools for a mobile generation with the aim of simplifying people’s lives.”

Mutewatch - Pure Black

The integrated touch-screen allows the wearer to switch between functions by swiping across the display, tapping the top of each digit to activate the timer or alarm.

Mutewatch - Indigo Blue

Mutewatch plugs into a USB port and is fully charged within two hours. The device warns the wearer when the battery level is low and will automatically enter a hibernation mode.

Mutewatch - Charcoal Grey

Mutewatch features a fully adjustable wristband and is available in five colours: ivy green, nova purple, indigo blue, pure black and charcoal grey.

MONDO and DUO 24 World Timer Watches

The award-winning Botta-Design has much to take pride about; talk about 50 awards under their belt (including red dot) and the revolutionary modern one-hand watch design by founder Klaus Botta! As a big fan of horology I am completely mesmerized by complication in a watch and especially features like world time. The MONDO and DUO 24 World Timer Watches are watches for modern everyday life and not just globetrotters like me.

Think about it, if you live in a country like the US, you need to know the three time zones on the tip of you fingers not confuse Eastern Time with CET – Central European time! World Timer Watches eliminate the risk of confusion with just a glance.

Let’s talk about the DUO 24 first, this is the first-ever dual time-zone watch based on the one-hand principle. What this means is that it shows both the local time and the time at one additional time zone, using just one hand in each case. The outlying main display shows the local time, and the 12-hour hand points to the same one-hand scale that has been used in the UNO.

The watch also features a secondary display that can show any second time zone that you fancy. To avoid the confusion surrounding daytime and nighttime, just follow the artificial horizon on the dial; it sets things straight for you. Powered with a RONDA 515.24H Swiss Made movement, you can team this beautiful watch with a vegetable tanned leather strap, steel link or rubber strap.

The MONDO features a more classic design and hosts a central 12-hour display using three hands. In this watch only the outlying 24-hour display is based on the one-hand principle. For the daytime distinctions, an artificial horizon divides the 24-hour ring to reflect the same. The positioning of the 24-hour display at the outermost edge of the dial gives the scale maximum resolution and makes it very easy to read.

If you were to ask me what makes both these watches stand apart from the rest, then it has to be the feature where the hands are set completely independently from each other, allowing the you to choose half and quarter-hour time zone offsets. It’s a rare feature to find among dual time zone watches, so this is a genuine advantage offered by Botta-Design.

Impressed! So much so that it’s worth taking advantage of the 10% Discount that Botta-Design is offering to our YD Readers!

Time with a Twist of Orange, Please

Conceived for use by the blind but stylish enough to appeal to a broader market, the Nike Citrus watch’s spiral form stretches to fit any wrist size and hints to its zesty inspiration: an orange peel twist. To tell time, the wearer simply touches the tactile, concave face to feel for the hour and minute hands. Unlike many other products for the seeing-impaired, this one can be universally appreciated and mass-produced to keep unit prices low!
